1st listened to this track when i was 15 yrs old. 2000 until today this blows my mind. they made the rumble sound so violent yet cool and full of energy
I remember buying this CD when it first hit record stores. As a lifelong fan of West Side Story, I was blown away by this track (and several others on the album).
I think about how modern pop stars with their fame and notoriety for producing little more than mediocre bubble gum. Then phenomenal musicians like these struggle in many cases to make ends meet. An indictment of our our culture if ever there was one. Thanks for all of the beautiful music Chuck. You were a giant.
I agree. The complexity of the composition unfortunately appeals to only segments of the community. The everyday joe blow wants simple chorus hooks in convenient 3 minute songs, not exclusively but most of the time. Hotel California, Born to Run, piano Man and American Pie slipped through. As a musician I have a deep appreciation for what I’ve just heard here as I’m sure you do to. Thankfully the world has a huge population and the small percentage of us that get it are still a big number. However only the best of the best can cut through with a limited audience. Steve Vai and Chick Corea and right at the top of the freak list, hence why they’ve done so well. Not just being brilliant but pushing forward and blending their brilliance with commerciality ie worked out how to financially prosper too!
I've been listening to Chick Corea, Steve Vai and the OST of West Side Story for decades and didn't know this existed till Steve's tribute to Chick on FB...blown away!
This song came into my life in a mix on a Verbatim CD. I listened to it day and night without knowing who wrote it. I don't know what happened to the CD; it was lost many years ago. Today, by chance, I find the song again, and what a surprise to know its performers, masters.
Almost a Zappa-like quality to the arrangement, especially the horns & rhythm sections. Awesome--cheers to these great musicians and the brilliant legacy of Chick
Simon Phillips and Weckl are awesome in here. In the battle you can hear very well which drummer is playong, because they both have a unique sound and style! Love this song!
first I've heard of this session/recording. Love return to forever. Listened to them in high school. Amazing musicians indeed!!! Fuse on baby!!! Oh my.... the drummer is absolutely kickin it!!!!
Two drummers actually. This was a track from the album "The Songs of West Side Story" An earlier commenter posted this link www.vai.com/AllAboutSteve/disconotes_westside.html Hopefully Steve Vai will forgive me for plagiarizing some of the link here: In the film, "Rumble" is sort of the do-or-die dance that takes place between the Jets and the Sharks. The arrangement was done so 2 bands would face each other. The bands were Chick Corea's Elektric Band: (Chick Corea - keyboards, Dave Weckl - drums, Frank Gambale - guitar, Jimmy Earl - bass, Eric Marienthal - saxophone) vs. Steve Vai's Monsters (Steve Vai - guitar, Simon Phillips - drums, John Pena - bass, David Paich - keyboards, Lenny Castro - percussion.)
Steve Its Charlene from Long Island, Costa Meas and The NAMM! I just got this on FB! I Shared it for YOU. THIS IS AMAZING!!! I'm so sorry for your LOSS! All my love and friendship always ❤ 💕
Go read Vai’s great description from his homepage. It gives you something to think about. I wish it was recorded live. Because of youtube I can't spam with a link. It's on Vai >Home > All About Steve > Discography > Complete Discography > Notes: The Songs of West Side Story
Two geniuses working together for the first time? I wonder who suggested that collaboration? I wish they'd do it more often. I can't help but wonder what Maestro Bernstein would think? He'd have to love that wild & crazy drummer!
This isn't available on youtube music DAM!.. Never knew this existed. Here because of Chick. Where is this available to stream? I don't see it on amazon either

mindre begavet ..... I met FG at a guitar masterclass in the late 80s in London, a very genuinely enthusiastic guy, and very kind. I was inspired by him to think of scales and arpeggios in completely different ways [I was originally classically trained on guitar] This West Side inspired piece is great, my Mum used to put this on the turntable when I was tiny. ;~)
I really want to see a production that uses the arrangements of the songs form this album, mostly because I think this would be a great way to close the first act. Heck, possibly extend this to intermission music and make it the entr'acte for the second act.
I wonder if anyone else notices you can't hear the Vai band in this mix? I can't, as it seems to only feature the left stereo channel (which is where Chick's band is panned on the CD version). As a result, only half the music is being heard...
@@rub800 Actually, my first though was "amazing drumming" and then I though "i bet it's Weckle"! Now that's an amazing drummer when he stands out and is identifiable in a song featuring Via and Corea ... especially when the person who picked him out has only heard him a hand full of times and is himself an instrumental guitarist not a drummer, as in me! lol What a talent he is and that goes for all of them! Cheers
Steve Vai's posted FB status made me come here.
right here with you, but from IG
Yup. Didn’t even know Chick died until I saw the post. Sad day.
oddnurr same.

As a Chick Corea fan, I'm ashamed to admitt that I was not aware of this. This is something else . . .
@@arthurmee aw man its all good, i come frm a musical family, most of them weren't aware of this collaboration too hehe
And as a musical theatre, and C Corea fan I can just comply.
Dave Weckl and Simon Phillips. WOW.

Well said and so true.
The name is Chick not Chuck...
@@djlcruze I'm going to guess that spell check is to blame.

agreed ..how did we miss this..especially since I am a huge Bernstein/WSS fan
Me too!
You R not the only one. We must have been "sleeping in class" - Or, maybe we just stayed home that day. Brilliant tune -
The only winners are those who are REALLY listening with respect and awe. Thanks Chick and Steve!

Una obra de arte maravillosa la que hicieron estos dos genios juntos !
This is an incredible piece of music performed by these amazing musicians!
Impresive song by Bernstein and so impresive version by Corea, Vai and company!
