    The Castle of Illusion series just gave me so many positive memories. I would never speak ill of the series. Its just a great series.

    Nobody else notice the pretending to play the game gear with headphones but there's no cartridge in the console and the game is on the arm of the sofa.

    I loved all the Mega Drive 'Illusion' titles as a kid. The sound effects are still ingrained in my memory even now, and hearing your jump on the enemies head in Castle of Illusion was like stepping back in time! Great review!

    @Alianger i meant black sheep as it stick's out but not in a bad way was just that it had a hand in shaping the rest of the games in the series so that point of been made better. and all i can say with land is i was honest but each to there own as they say, thank you for you comment and for watching :D

    You should totally get around to doing them. The differences between the 8-bit and 16-bit versions of the game might not be known to everyone, those who won't know they are essentially different games.

  • @AtticusStount
    @AtticusStount 6 років тому +3

    You missed out the Master System Castle of Illusion which came before Land, and is completely different to the Megadrive version. The jumping mechanic in the MD version annoyed me.

    It's very likely that Legend was a Game Gear exclusive since Sega decided to end support for Master System games, before they did the same for the Game Gear, so some later 8-bit Sega games were Game Gear exclusives and could only be available in certain regions.

    You forgot about the Master System version of Castle of illusion. The same name but a totally different game. But it was the gameplay predecessor of Land of Illusion.

    Great video dude. I can remember being really blown away by just how nice Castle of Illusion's visuals and audio were back when I was a kid. It's definitely underrated and deserves a much higher place in the pantheon of great Megadrive games.

    Some of the "new" gameplay things of Land... come from Castle, on the aster system. It was way different than the Genesis one.

    Great review on a truly classic series. I only played Castle and World of Illusion on the Megadrive and they were fantastic graphically and musically as you said in your review. I always felt WOI was almost like having 3 games in one depending on which character you played or co-op. I know not related but Disney's Donald Duck Quackshot on the Megadrive was another great platformer I hope you do a review of this one day as it was a fun game. Cheers. :)

    i didn't review each of the titles in this series review in the correct order they came out. i pick what i though was the natural order to review these titles in. if you do enough searching on google you can find the answer to your questions

    Same goes for Castle of Illusion, that was also ported to the GG and the Master System, and they are completely different to the Mega Drive version. They basically follow the same game design as Land of Illusion and are just as awesome on their own as the MD version.
    I have to agree as well, the Illusion series is definitely a very underrated set of games and some of my favourite games of all time

    @LarryBundyJr well i was planning to cover the MS and GG version of castle and the GG of land and the MS of legend but i cut them bit's out as i dident want to make this vid any longer but i do plan a fallow up video to cover the lose ends. and apart for a copy of MS legend i have the other GG games

    Some very good reviews. The Illusion series is really underappreciated, especially World of Illusion as it’s one of the best 16bit platform games.

    World of Illusion was confusing me as a child...and that stupid level where you have to jump on the leaves as Donald was NIGHTMARISHLY hard for me for some reason.

  • @Alianger
    @Alianger 12 років тому

    Good reviews overall, but for Land of Illusion you should've went into what was vague about it because I don't recall having such a problem myself. Remember it's more of a platform adventure similar to Wonder Boy III or Metroid. There's also hidden power ups to collect in most stages which adds some replay value. It's the best in the series imo (it's harder and more complex than World), far from a black sheep.

    Though it mixes the illusion feel with modern elements such as the cannon and that paint/thinner thing from Epic Mickey, it's the near perfect homage of the series. There are bad sides to the game, but for the most part, they did NOT bullshit around during development stages. This was made by people with responsibility...which is not what I can say for some people... *glares at Capcom*

    i decided to review castle first as it was the first game in this series. and then i reviewed land as it was the 2nd game to come out. from my memory i believed legend and world came out at the same time, and so it made sense to me to review legend 3rd, and then review world last as it was the last game in this series to come out on the mega drive.

  • @davidhass3lh0ff
    @davidhass3lh0ff  11 років тому +2

    sega supported the master system threw out the mega drives life. lots of games were made for the mega drive first, and then later ported to the master system as well.

    i like chatting to viewers and answering there questions, but when people are asking me question that can be better answered with a simple google search, then i will point them in that direction as it saves me from having to do the search myself. when it's questions that i can only answer or relate to then i'm happy to answer and interactive with the viewers. i would never brush off someone.

    You forgot the Master System version of Castle of Illusion. The Master System Game has differences to the Mega Drive version. The Enchanted Forest and Toy Factory Levels are the same, as are the Library and Castle Levels (in Normal Mode). The only Level that is different is the third one. The Mega Drive Third Level is The Storm & Water Caves. The Master System Third Level has exactly the same music, but its world is The Chocolate Factory. First and Second Level Bosses (Tree Trunk and Clown) are slightly different, while the other three bosses are different altogether. Five Gremlins turn into a large evil Chocolate Bar. I can't remember what the fourth boss is, but the fifth is Grandfather Clock Face. Also, Mickey winds up defeating a dragon as well as Mizrabel. Minnie is freed from Mizrabel's clutches. This Master System version of Mickey's game is made unnecessarily harder to complete on Normal Mode (peasy as pie on Practice Mode). There is a very annoying time limit in each level. You only have a certain amount of time to complete each level, including defeating the dragon and Mizrabel and to free Minnie. Another annoying feature of the game is the Bosses. The Five Masters of Illusion are harder to defeat, so I usually just give up trying and stick to Practice Mode. If you haven't yet played the Master System version of Castle of Illusion, take my advice: don't attempt Normal Mode. Stick to Practice Mode; the Time Limit Game is easier to complete. Sounds cheesy, I know.

    Shameless advertising here, he mentioned to any retro game music fans to look up Land of Illusion, I recently uploaded the soundtrack including pics and a level by level review in the descriptions. Absolutely loved that game as a child, and I still do. Every level had some unique aspect to separate it from the others, it didn't just rely on theme alone.

    @saberblock well wrighting took just over a month do and in no wrighter so wrighting takes me longer then most, filming about a day, getting game play footage im not sure but when i finished all 4 games i have just over 7 hours of game play footage, and editing 5 days and about 5 hours on each of them days editing. so total time i haven't got a clue maybe 50plus hours but this was a special vid and i wanted it to be as good as possible :D thank you

    @AydanWatkins yer your right and to be honest i've never had much luck emulating the n64 or the sega saturn, but anythink below 32bit emulating is all most perfect and it's a great way to try out games that you might not get to play, some people say it takes away from the experience but i say play the game in full screen, make sure you have decent speakers or sound system and a good controller and it's the same as the real thing if not better ;D

  • @davidhass3lh0ff
    @davidhass3lh0ff  12 років тому

    @AydanWatkins i did try to grab a copy of legend on MS but it was a pain to get hold of and i think the GG version play's better anyway but that might be down to the rom and the emulator i was useing. i do like playing these's games on real hard ware but i also like playing them in hd and it's a better way to get game play footage as well

    World of Illusion was the only one of these that I played myself, and only at a friend's house. But it was so great! My second favorite game on the Mega Drive/Genesis, just behind Sonic 2.
    And the comparison to Kingdom Hearts wasn't too far off. There were so many references to old Disney movies in this game, it was wonderful. Alice in Wonderland, Snow White and the Seven Dwarves, the Sword in the Stone, Little Mermaid... it really was just like an early version of Kingdom Hearts.
    Just with no Sora and no convoluted plotlines.

    I still own castle of illusion and world of illusion.
    I remember back in the late 90's I did beat land of illusion but I've never heard of legend of illusion.
    Once in a long while me n my brother love playing world of illusion together, were big fans of coop platformers both old or new and the only modern non platformer coop games we like are sonic 4 ep2, left 4 dead and resident evil 5 gold.
    The first castle of illusion game imo hasn't aged well for me I tend to get bored of it after 10 mins

    Great video, well worth the wait :) Legend of Illusion looks quite nice on the emulator, but I bet that desert level with scrolling background looks a blury mess on the Game Gear screen.
    lol @ 14:11 you're playing the Game Gear without a cartridge! I think you've spent far too long in the illusion universe haha
    World of Illusion was always my fave too, some fond memories playing co-op with my brother, fun times :)
