  • In this video, I show you the depth finder mount that i made to go onto a canoe.
    For the securing to the canoe, I bought rod holders that came with C clamps, then used those C clamps to secure the mount to the canoe. I am using a garmin striker 4.

    Sweet! I can't wait to do this to my canoe. I live in an area where the lakes are surrounded by brush so there's only a handful of spots to fish from shore and usually those are clogged up with out-of-staters who leave their trash behind. I can't wait to try this and a trolling motor too! I have my wife's OK on the matter!

    This looks like one of the better removable designs I've seen for a canoe. I may try this with my Old Town 160 and the Garmin 73SV I just got for it.

    Thank you for this. I couldn't find the aluminum 3" wide U shape but instead I bought an oak door threshold that worked well. The thickness was 3/4" and it accepted the rod holder screws easily. Just needed to drill holes and not do any slots and it came out great.

    I did the video "Mount a Garmin Striker 4 to a canoe" by hydroshots007. I hated to put the two holes in my canoe gunwhale for my unit. Good thinking! I like the "Spotted Cow" choice also! Great job, Jeff

    Are you a metal worker? I'm wondering what kind of off-the-shelf item I can use for the cross beam

    • @northwoodsengineered
      @northwoodsengineered  6 місяців тому

      Thank you! I’m not a metal worker, but the things I did with that aluminum aren’t super complicated.
      But you could just use a board instead. It might just be a little bit heavier.

    Really love this setup. I want do the same. I will use oak. I plan to get the same clamps and cut slots in the wood. I will use 3/4 inch thick stock. My question is about the knobs that tighten down the rod holder. Are they long enough to do through 3/4 inch of wood and the clamp? Also how did you attach the clamps to the bottom of the metal c-channel? Or do they just hang there until tightened? Thanks.

    • @northwoodsengineered
      @northwoodsengineered  Рік тому +1

      Hi, thank you! The knobs that come with the rod holders are not long enough to go through 3/4 inch oak. But you could always buy replacement knobs with a longer stud.
      I did not attach the clamps to the bottom of the c channel, they just hang there till tightened

      I did have one follow up question. On the side where you have the transducer mount you appear to be using the rod holder clamp but not the rod holder. I see where you are clamping to the side of the canoe but I can’t quite tell from the video how you are getting that clamp to tighten down to the c-channel. Is there enough room under the transducer arm mount for some type of bolt? Are you then just using the rod holder knob/stud and running it up through the clamp and c-channel and kind of tightening from the bottom up? Hope that makes sense

    • @northwoodsengineered
      @northwoodsengineered  Рік тому +1

      @@TomMoore-jo1vm So on that side, there is a little gap between the transducer mount and the wall of the c channel, and im just using a standard M10 bolt there that is tightened down. it was really tight in that spot, so i couldn't use the knob, and the hole is off center, close to the C channel wall. hope that makes sense.

    • @TomMoore-jo1vm
      @TomMoore-jo1vm Рік тому

      Ah that makes perfect sense. So if I understand you correctly the slot you milled on that side is not centered in the c- channel? It’s closer to the wall to give you room to tighten that bolt. I’m going to use a 5 inch wide board or thereabouts to have more of a console setup so that just might give me a little more room.

      @northwoodsengineered  2 роки тому

      Hey, I got them off amazon. Check the description for a link to those and the transducer mount

  • @jimmycates9631

    did you have to get longer bolts to fit through the aluminum to the top piece of the brocraft rod holder? also, how did you go about mounting the clamp below the transducer arm? it appears to be the same brocraft clamp that comes with the rod holder.

    • @northwoodsengineered
      @northwoodsengineered  3 місяці тому +1

      So forgive me for not remembering exactly what I did and clearly not explaining it well enough. I don’t think I got a long bolt on the LH side where the is holder is, I think that’s just the bolt/knob that came with it. On the RH side it’s just a normal M6 bolt about an inch long that is between the transducer mount and the edge of the aluminum c channel as the knob wouldn’t fit.

    Great job! Where did you get the aluminum tray? Also did the transducer mount come with the clamp as well?

    • @northwoodsengineered
      @northwoodsengineered  2 роки тому

      Thank you! The aluminum is just a piece of c-channel that I got from a steel/metal supply store. If you find a place that sells it they can cut it to whatever length you need.
      The transducer mount did not come with a clamp, I bought two rod holders. I will say back when I bought them 3 years ago they were wayyyy cheaper than they are right now

    How long does the battery last with Garmin running?

    • @northwoodsengineered
      @northwoodsengineered  2 роки тому

      So the longest i have run it is two days of fishing for about 8 hours each day. I was using the 5 AH milwaukee battery and it only used 1 of the 4 bars on the battery. So you could probably get 6 to 8 full days of fishing with the 5 AH
