Zola was spiked like crazy from decker, yes when a runner is cutting in too close (Zola) it suks, but you need to chop your stride (mary) and you kind of stutter step to allow ZB in front of you. Believe me Decker had done that move thousands of times, all runners have..

Mary Decker Slaney was one of the best runners of her era no doubt… but that fall in the ‘84 Olympics was 98% her own fault.
    Not happy about that…
    but that is the fact

I was in LA for that race and I still feel so sorry for Zola. She still is a little farm girl from small town anywhere. The crowd were so callous to her. She is an Afrikaans which marks you in peoples heads . You "must" be a racist.....racist by default. . Her father if he is still alive should hang his head in shame.... ...Decker was in her 30's and could have treated the kid a bit better but that is hindsight.....I was rooting for Decker to win but I never rooted for her again after that night in LA.....
Poor Zola. Not the brightest light on the tree......and for that she was horribly used by the press and media and family..... thanks for the video......I was totally looking for something else and found this on a day I have been hearing about a film about them being made or coming out soon.....

Dutch Van Helsing, thanks for your comment....I just love sports fans.....especially the ones who have an opinion and will take time to express their thoughts......and particularly the ones who know what they are talking about....and you are correct about Zola and how poorly she was treated by the American press....for in my opinion, Decker-Slaney was always a "whiner"....however, bringing joy to a sports fan for whatever the reason is a true joy for me. My name is L E....I am the curator / organizer / person who posts all the content on my web page www.imasportsphile.com ....of which I have 2300 hours of video sports, comedy and music content to post. Winners get up if they stumble, losers stay down and nurse their bitter wounds. Decker made no attempt to get up, she obviously felt she was so important they would stop the race for her. I respect Zola because she finished what she started.

@@WolfeTone66 Yes, it shows how fragile life events are and how God leaves things to chance. I thought it was very revealing when they asked Charles Manson what life lesson he had to share once. He said to be alert to the fact that your life can change in an instant. He's seen people come to ruin when they least expected it. Good point by Charlie. Christopher Reeves comes to mind as an example. He knew horse jumping was dangerous for a man of his size.

I have heard various views about that famous race and accident in the 1984 Olympics and I was watching it live at the time. On one angle, sort of a long view down the track and not high but roughly at the runner's own height (and therefore taken no doubt by someone with a handheld on track level), it does appear that Zola placed one of her legs out in an attempt to trip Mary Decker - and on purpose. The first time I saw that replay I thought it highly probable, if indeed not morally certain, that Ms. Budd was the cause of the accident. I have had other people interpret the matter differently to me though.
I believe Ms. Decker would have won this race if it was somehow allowed to finish... Yet prior to the race, there was a big build-up with Ms. Budd seen as the bright young star set on defeating the champion Ms. Decker, quite like McEnroe and Borg in tennis.
