American chocolate tastes sour in comparison to european chocolate because of butyric acid. Butyric acid can be found in human vomit.
This substance was added to the chocolate recipe by Hershey's in the early 1900s to slow down the rotting process of the milk part in the chocolate.
Hershey's chocolate itself was part of the standard food ration for soldiers in WW2 (called "D Ration Bar" at this time) and many soldiers got used to the taste and after the war they wanted more of that "sour" chocolate. That's why it became the standard in US.
Butyric acid is not used in Europe. They use other ingredients to stabilize the milk.

    • @Dukenukem
      @Dukenukem 23 дні тому +19

Not really to slow down the rotting process as having a "processed milk" as ingredient, product using "fresh milk" had to have very short shelf life by law. Hershey's just provided longer shelf life by changing ingredient.

the 'sport' naming and the square shape comes from its origin. It was a customary for many spectators to sports events in Germany to have chocolate as a snack. The traditional rectangular shape would poke out of men's jacket pocket, also foil packaging wasn't ideal when one wanted to re-wrap up the left over. Hence the square shape and resealable packaging, that fits in a jacket pocket neatly and with less chance it soiling inside the pocket.

Hi, Ryan! The first chocolate Easter bunnies🐇 were produced in Germany in the 19th century. Historical reports suggest that the chocolate Easter bunny first appeared in Germany in the 1830s. At this time, chocolate figures were becoming increasingly popular as Easter decorations and gifts, especially in connection with the custom of the Easter bunny bringing coloured eggs to children.😀

RitterSport and Milka are good and very popular chocolate brands, one who is a bit better is chocolate from Lindt. Or if you like it, Lübecker Marzipan from Niederegger (it's not everyones taste).
And the packaging of RitterSport opens easily if you crack it in half up to the front, the back will open then by itself.
One thing you should try, which is very popular in Germany, especially in the winter, is a chocolate fountain, where you throw your favourite chocolate in, let it melt and run like a fountain; there you can dip fruits or cheese or vegetables or if you like more chocolate in, it's fun especially for kids and delicious if you have a sweet tooth.

Can confirm Hershey's just tastes like slighty OFF. I can't really explain it, it had a slightly sour (not bitter but sour) taste to it and also tasted quite chemical. Like it was a chocolate for sure and it tasted like actual chocolate, just with a weird little twist to it. And also yes Hershey's doesn't melt in your mouth like Rittersport or milka does. a couple of unrelated fun facts:
    1. Only Ritter chocolate has this square shape. It's their signature. At the company headquarters, the family Ritter has an art museum, where they collect all kinds of art that is related to squares. Very intersting.
    2. When I was at university, we once had a lecture by an expert from Milka (the other very wide-spread German brand) about "The crystallization of chocolate" in which he passed around all kinds of samples of how chocolate tastes, when you cool it too slow or too fast... I think I ate two full packages of chocolate in that one lecture 🙂
    3. When I was an exchange student in the rural US in 94/95 I really didn't like Hersheys, but that was all there was to be had there. But then my highschool choir did a fundraiser selling chocolate bars and those tasted actually quite good. We each should sell like 100 bars for a dollar each. So I got permission from my parents to invest 100 bucks in chocolate. The next morning in school, everyone was comparing "How many have you sold already?" "Five" or "Eight". Then they asked me and I said "All of them". "All of them? Who did you sell it to?" "Myself!" :-D Anyway, that stash lasted almost all year. I guess I should have bought some additional bars from my friends ;-)

The mouthfeel you experience with Rittersport chocolate probably comes from a processing step that is often done with chocolate here it's called “conching”, where melted chocolate is slowly stirred for hours over and over in large pots, which later ensures that the chocolate is slightly buttery in the mouth, as you say, and melts smoothly. I'm not sure if this is also done with American chocolate.

Comparing Ritter Sport and Hershey’s was a good idea, I think. Both are popular brands, while in terms of quality they’re considered average or a little above average in their respective countries.
Ritter Sport is the only brand that sells their chocolate in this shape and they’ve got a patent on the shape. Milka sued them for it, but lost.
There’s also a very neat Ritter Sport museum owned by the family, with one part history of the brand and production info, where there are nice gimmicks everywhere like little trucks that come out of a miniature factory to bring kids small chocolates to try. And then there’s a beautiful art exhibition with Mrs Ritter’s private collection of modern art and changing themes, all dedicated to squares and other geometric shapes. The restaurant has delicious things, too, with their chocolate incorporated in the recipes…
To everyone nearby, I recommend a visit in Waldenbuch, Baden-Württemberg, Germany!

@verttikoo2052 I'm aware. That's unfortunately how the world works. It's the same with breweries and car companies. In the public perception though, Milka is a German brand (not Swiss), just like Bugatti is still an Italian car even though Volkswagen owns it.

@ That is how the world works if we let it.
It is just important that we remember it. Why does Berkshire Hathaway and Warren Buffett allow these chemicals in the USA and not in the European Union 🇪🇺?
Because we in the European Union 🇪🇺 don’t allow it. He allows it in the USA so that he can earn more money out of YOU! Billionaires are no charity.
Funny thing is that they still make good money from us and at least the Fanta tastes closer to an Orange 🍊 than some even more toxic blend of pure chemicals with full of diarrhea causing sweeteners?
Ever have had an explosive diarrhea? What did you drink few hours earlier? Was it Soda Zero?
Sweeteners are so toxic for your body that your body doesn’t even want to extract any important minerals or vitamins. Your body just needs to get rid of everything. It fills your stomach with as much water than possible and then flushes your guts with it and then you are already running to the toilet 🚽
American food is full of sweeteners and the reason why adult diapers are even a thing like Diaper Don.

The main difference between American chocolate and European chocolate is the way milk is added to the mixture. In the U.S., it is often in the form of butric acid, while in Europe, it's milk powder.

Butyric acid is produced by digestion and, yes, it's present in vomit. It's also responsible for the smell of rancid butter. Its only used in chocolate to stabilise it and to stop the sugar crystallising, giving a longer shelf life. Personally, I'd rather take my chances and not have it!

Its a square in this size because in former days it fittet in the sports shirt pockets. Thats also why its named Ritter (family name) SPORT.
Regarding the design: every taste has its own color. So by the bright blue color I already knew, it would be alpine milk.
And: you are right. Regarding the 100gr. bars Ritter overtook Milka a couple of years ago.

  • @fatdad64able
    @fatdad64able 18 днів тому

Ritter translates to „Knight“ which is a common family name in both of our countries. In the fifties men going to a sports event, often wore everyday clothes. That means they often wore jackets shirts, ties, (suite and tie) and hats, which nowadays you would go to your office job with. Now these jackets usually have shallow pockets. All chocolate bars at the time were packed in the rectangle fomat (like the Hershey‘s bar) and also they were wrapped in aluminium foil wrapper and then in paper. Quite a mess when you took a chocolate bar as a snack with you to the stadium. And on top of that it would stick out of your pockets. Mr. Ritter‘s inventions were the square format, but a little thicker, so it would fit into the pocket without sticking out. PLUS he did away with the aluminium foil liner, PLUS you open the package by breaking it into two pieces right down the middle, ate some of the chocolate and folded it back together without chocolate crumbs in your pocket. So Ritter Sport is the chocolate of your choice to take to the soccer stadium. In France many people think it is some power bar for when you do workout or the like, but it is just regular chocolate. I must say though that I do get the impression sometimes that it doesn’t melt quite as soon as other chocolate (besides Hershey‘s which seems to be made from bakelite) which would add an advantage when carrying it in the pocket. And this, is _the rest of the story_ 😂 Viele Grüße aus Deutschland 🇩🇪

I saw a show on TV where people of different countries tried chocolate. Most of them preferred they chocolate they grew up with and liked European chocolate. Nobody except the Americans liked Hershey's.
As a German, I find - like most Europeans - Hershey's "chocolate" disgusting. I favor Swiss and German followed by Belgian chocolate.
A good place to find good and affordable German milk chocolate is ALDI. I usually get the Choceur or the Moser Roth min bars. Both are great. The Moser Roth is smoother and milkier, but slightly more expensive than the Choceur. They have a lot of other types of good chocolate, too.
I am a true chocolate fan and even did the walking chocolate tour in Zurich, Switzerland. You walk through the city to all these amazing chocolatiers and experience next level chocolate art and taste. It's among the best experiences for true chocolate fans.
And yes, Europe has chocolate bunnies, Santas and even advent calendars. They usually have good chocolate. In the US, you can find them at ALDI and other places. By the way, Ikea has also European chocolate. I think it's usually from Sweden, but I've seen advent calendars with German chocolate at Ikea, also.

I am not a chocolate eater but out of curiosity I tried both Feastables and Hershey's 2 or 3 weeks ago and it is horrible, it literally tastes just like sugar and the best comparison is 1€ advent calendar chocolate but it's even worse than that. The most common brand here in germany probably still is Milka, Ritter Sport is more known for their filled chocolate with crispies and stuff like that, I didn't even know that they sell plain milk chocolate. Another popular but pricy one is Lindt (that's actually a Swiss company) and especially their Lindor Pralines (fancy chocolate candies) are really good. If you want the best of the best you probably want to go more towards smaller belgish or swiss brands.

      Depends on the "plain" chocolate.
Milk chocolate is made ti be eaten as is.
Pastry chocolate (50 to 60% cocoa) is made for cooking (as branded😅)
Fine chocolate (70% cocoa and more, up to 95%) are to eat as is, but in small quantity and to enjoy the flavours.
Anything below 50% cocoa (not cocoa butter, but real cocoa) doesn t deserve the label "chocolate". It s more 'chocolate flavoured'.

The Alfred Ritter Company was founded in 1912 by confectioner Alfred Eugen Ritter and his wife Clara. Clara was responsible for marketing and sales, while Alfred managed the production. In 1919 the company moved from Stuttgart-Cannstatt to the small town of Waldenbuch, because they needed larger premises; at this time they sold their chocolate still mostly under the brand "Alrika" (for Alfred Ritter Kannstatt). But in 1932 Clara invented the squared chocolate bar, which did fit exactly into the pocket of the jackets (without any part of the bar sticking out) worn by wealthier people while visiting sporting events - those jackets were also known as "sport jackets". And so the slogan "Quadratisch, praktisch, gut" ("square, handy, good") and the brand "Ritter Sport" became a complete success, even more so during the 1950s and 1960s.
11:12 The Easter Bunny right in the middle of the top row, that in the golden foil with the red collar, that is a German Easter Bunny. This design is copyrighted to Lindt & Sprüngli, a Swiss company with a subsidiary in Aachen, Germany, where those bunnies are produced. The chocolate for those "hollow figures" has another consistency than "normal" chocolate; in most cases they taste not very good also in Germany. But the quality of the Lindt ones is a little bit better than most.
12:25 Milka was a Swiss brand by the Suchard company (which merged in 1970 with Tobler and was the biggest Swiss chocolate producer until its main plant was closed in 1990). In 1982 Suchard was bought by Klaus J. Jacobs, owner of coffee trading house Joh. Jacobs + Co in Bremen, and merged into the Jacobs Suchard AG, which was sold in 1990 to Philip Morris, became in 1993 Kraft Jacobs Suchard and in 2012 part of the US company Mondelez International. Milka chocolate is nowadays produced mostly in Lörrach (Germany) with additional factories in Bludenz (Austria) for big bars (200g - 400g), Straßburg (France) for chocolate pralines, Bratislava (Slovakia) and Poznań (Poland). By this account it is a German chocolate produced by an US company - and you can see the US influence in the newer varieties (like Milka & Oreo, Milka & Daim, Milka & TUC, as well as other products and brands belonging to Mondelez).

Just FYI, Ritter Sport is so chunky/thick because of the square format, which is pretty much unique to the brand. All other chocolate bars are rectangular, like Hersheys, but still about quite as thick. Standard weight for any chocolate bar is 100 grams, or roughly 3.5 ounces. It also comes in at least a dozen different flavors -- dark, white, with almonds, nuts, raisins, various fillings like a mint or yogurt cream, or seasonal varieties, like cinnamon, say, for Chistmas. (My personal favorite is "dark milk" -- milk chocolate with a higher cocoa content, so not quite as sweet.)
Ritter Sport is also considered very run-of-the-mill as chocolate goes; okay, but not top of the line -- and a bar is usually around $1.50.

the name "SPORT" in the chocolate indicate that you can always close the packaging, even when you're doing "sports"
what you've TORPED OFF is the marking where you break the chocolate and bend it to open the package. You can actually close this "lip" again, it stays closed by itself.

You have to break it in the middle. The size is actually chosen (by co-founder, the wife Clara Ritter of the founder) to fit in a sports jacket. Their slogan was (German "Quadratisch. Praktisch. Gut.") which means literally translated Square, practical, good.
The smoothness comes with the cacao butter used in the (real) chocolate manufacturing. Most likely similar to the Milka you have (the name means milk and chocolate). Downside is that it melts quicker and sugar and fat flackes appear as stains if it gets older. Its still eatable and not spoiled but it doesnt look nice.
The most famous chocolate easter bunnies are from Lindt (which is a Swiss brand). Their easter bunny is (as far as Im aware) the most famous. They have a golden wrapping and the bunny has a red collar with a small bell.
