- Jo Koy got the 2024 Golden Globes off to a bit of a bumpy start, going off script as some of his jokes were met with not-so-enthusiastic reactions. The night's host aimed zingers at the year's biggest TV shows and films, including "Oppenheimer" and "Barbie." After a "Barbie" joke fell flat, he told the crowd, "Yo, I got the gig 10 days ago! You want a perfect monologue? Yo, shut up! You're kidding me, right? Slow down - I wrote some of these and they're the ones you're laughing at."

My favorite thing was going back and forth and watching the different reactions after that particular joke. Selena Gomez looks like she wants to slide under the table and die. Emma Stone looks disgusted. Harrison Ford looks over at his wife, who is facepalming. A black woman is picking at her food with the most bored face. A white lady in glasses looks like she's asleep. Most of them have no reaction whatsoever.

The cringiest part was him getting angry that no one is laughing at his "jokes" and then trying to defend himslef by implying that he didnt even write all of the jokes. Pathetic.
Because the only jokes he's somewhat good at is insulting his own race. Filipinos would laugh at any jokes even if it's not funny. They have an easy sense of humor. Other than that, he got nothing. He's not funny at all.

If you are a comedian never complain about your material not being good as it causes the audience to start to scrutinise it more and that causes more jokes to go over their head as they contimplate if the joke was funny or not.
True. It's like a bad movie script. The actors can only work with the dialogue and role given to them so they have to deliver it as best they can without complaints. He should have been honest at the post-event interview, not during the show.
Indeed, any speaker, comedian or not, never talks about how they went about writing the material or apologises in advance because it's crap.

I watched the Gervias monologue after watching Jo Koy, now I understand the lack of this year’s enthusiasm. Overall, different styles, Jo Koy did his best.
He didn’t shock me, I just felt that he was in waaaay over his head.

I don't really care about what topics a comedian chooses to joke about as long as the jokes are actually funny. Sadly, these were just not great jokes. It all just felt really awkward and he kept acknowledging the awkwardness ("like I said, I didn't write all of these," etc.) which just made it worse. Maybe if he'd had more time to prepare it could've gone better, who knows.

I have. I once saw a professional comedian (live) react extremely poorly to a drunk audience member who was being a bit disruptive, but not really heckling. The comedian got angry and ranted at this drunk old bloke, who I hadn't even noticed before that. It tanked the whole event, not just his set. When it was over I couldn't get out of there fast enough.

The next time you hear his name will be on the interveiw circuit where he will take the "Gig" of being a bloviating apologist for his failure to make people laugh. With his attitude, you'll be able to catch him Tuesdays and Thursdays at Ned's laugh bucket in Willow Creek in Idaho, with a show at 3:00 pm after he's done with the dishes from the lunch rush.

It’s a tough gig…and unfortunately I really believe it just wasn’t the proper choice for him to host for that night. However, I could only imagine the pressure that gives to someone else who doesn’t have the courage as JoKoy. I looked at his performance with a curve and he didn’t disappoint. But he was walking on the shoulders of Ricky Gervais, Tina Fey/Amy Poehler, Jimmy Fallon, and Seth Meyers. He just wasn’t of caliber to host. But I think at a curve, he did ok. Awkward. But ok.
I wish they asked Amy and Tina to host again.

Example, I don't find Katt Williams funny but IM not his target audience when he does his skits and shows.

I have seen Jo Koy’s standup, he’s a great comedian. Golden Globe’s is a bit out of his wheelhouse, but knowing his style of comedy, he hung in there. He took on a new challenge and did what he could with it.

He should have played with being in awe of his audience like his mom/ a typical filipino would… make jokes about how fanatic Filipinos would be roasting him right now. Another angle would be to talk about how refreshing it is to see Asian film and actors being nominated etc. He could have also made a joke about how many Australians are playing iconic characters like Barbie, Princess D and whatever Jacob Elordi was.
I thought that’s the route he was going to take (your first sentence)…because then he would have really stuck to his brand of comedy and represented his culture at the same time

This is a good video for people with fear of public speaking.
I get it. Hosting a show like this is intimidating especially when you've got to stand in front of Hollywood A-listers. But some of this jokes were rather distasteful. And we thought Ricky Gervais was brutal.

About the writters, it was part of the joke. He wouldnt say "i wrote the once you were laughing" if it wasnt for entertainment. For me, its brilliant.
It spoiled a lot of the jokes esp the "what? That's hilarious!". Maybe it's not content but the delivery because he just sounded so desperate for approval it was too cringy.
On JoKoy's defense, like he said, he only had 10 days to prepare, which means no one wanted the gig. Howard Stern made a good point about this.

1st Jo Koy did a decent job 👏 he isn't supper famous and didn't have a long time like most to set up, his normal stand up is baller, but I think he did decent, I also have to give him props some of the jokes was pretty good.
He is funny on Netflix, on stage, doing his bit.
