  • The Library of Congress holds significant manuscript materials for one of Liszt's most important piano cycles: the third and final book of the "Annees de pelerinage" ("Years of Pilgrimage"). In this presentation, David H. Plylar of the music division takes a close look at some of Liszt's earlier ideas, exploring the creative process that yielded these visionary late works and performing excerpts on piano. The Library acquired one of these manuscripts in 2016 ("Den Cypressen der Villa d'Este"), so this marked its first public appearance at the Library.
Speaker Biography: David H. Plylar is an accomplished composer, scholar, pianist and educator. He was appointed as a music specialist/concert producer at the Library of Congress in 2012 after serving as the artistic and new music coordinator of the KwaZulu-Natal Philharmonic Orchestra in South Africa for two years.
