Nima Arkani-Hamed - Why is Quantum Gravity So Significant?

  • Quantum theory explains how particles and fields work. General relativity, discovered by Einstein, explains how gravity generates the structure of the universe. But the two great theories of physics and cosmology are not compatible. But this is impossible because both describe reality. Only a solution to quantum gravity can solve the huge problem.

I think CTT uploads highlights of older episodes and interviews sometimes…which is fine, but I agree, they should put it in the description when these interviews took place, just for context.
      Alternate comedy response: Nima has so much knowledge of space-time, he figured out time travel and constantly replaces himself with a younger version.

      Except...this is precisely where Nima is making the same Einsteinian error as everyone else for 100 years. Why do energy and space have an inverse relation? Because they are inversely equivalent. As are mass and time. (Penrose always argues this by substituting E=hv into E=MC2). So again; energy is equivalent to inverse space and mass to inverse time. E=MC2 is mathematically correct but it is NOT an equivalence relation anymore then distance=time*speed is an 'equivalence relation' between space and time. You cannot just take two terms left nd right form an = sign and declare them 'equivalent'. Einsteins greatest blunder. So indeed to venture the smalls distances you have to put the most energy onto particles. This means [J/kg] the energy density is getting to large and will collapse just as what happens when you exceed C (m/s). remember; J/kg is equivalent to the inverse of m/s. So basically you will invers the grid structure in a mini blackhole where energy is now the grid and mass the clock. It is that simple

    • @tmcche7881
      @tmcche7881 2 роки тому +5

      I took it to mean,
      Because the distances are so small quantum theory applies.
      Using Planck’s Quantum Theory:
      Since, the smallest distance of measure possible is proportional to the wavelength
      and the wavelength is in the denominator, the smaller the denominator the greater the energy required.
      E=hv, using Planck’s Quantum Theory
      E = Energy
      v = frequency (= c/lambda)
      lambda = wavelength
      h = Planck's constant
      c = speed of light

    Could it be that quantum gravity is caused by the spinning of particles? It seems that spinning particles would cause an attractive force. Maybe the sum of all of those spinning particles causes regular gravity too? The more spinning particles means more mass, and more mass means stronger gravitational attraction.

    If these forces appear to be very similar as we approach the planck length, but noticeably different as distance increases and the forces "emerge", what does that tell us? Are we wasting our "time" trying to measure static things instead of understanding and measuring emergence itself? Hopefully this is not a stupid question.

    • @projectmalus
      @projectmalus 2 роки тому

      The difficulty with emergence is recreating it so as to observe and prove. Little clues are there already and Sapolsky's lectures 21 and 22 on Stanford channel get into a) why reductionism doesn't work (can't know the start state from end state and vice versa) and b) how emergence is all about basic elements that are intrinsically well adapted and when faced with some sort of pressure will drop back down into these basic elements. Emergence seems fairly well understood on the visible biological level because it's already there to observe but how to recreate on a fundamental level?

    Quantum Entangled Twisted Tubules:
    When we draw a sine wave on a blackboard, we are representing spatial curvature. Does a photon transfer spatial curvature from one location to another? Wrap a piece of wire around a pencil and it can produce a 3D coil of wire, much like a spring. When viewed from the side it can look like a two-dimensional sine wave. You could coil the wire with either a right-hand twist, or with a left-hand twist. Could Planck's Constant be proportional to the twist cycles. A photon with a higher frequency has more energy. (More spatial curvature). What if gluons are actually made up of these twisted tubes which become entangled with other tubes to produce quarks. (In the same way twisted electrical extension cords can become entangled.) Therefore, the gluons are actually a part of the quarks. Mesons are made up of two entangled tubes (Quarks/Gluons), while protons and neutrons would be made up of three entangled tubes. (Quarks/Gluons) The "Color Force" would be related to the XYZ coordinates (orientation) of entanglement. "Asymptotic Freedom", and "flux tubes" make sense based on this concept. Neutrinos would be made up of a twisted torus (like a twisted donut) within this model. Gravity is a result of a very small curvature imbalance within atoms. (This is why the force of gravity is so small.) Instead of attempting to explain matter as "particles", this concept attempts to explain matter more in the manner of our current understanding of the space-time curvature of gravity. If an electron has qualities of both a particle and a wave, it cannot be either one. It must be something else. Therefore, a "particle" is actually a structure which stores spatial curvature. Can an electron-positron pair (which are made up of opposite directions of twist) annihilate each other by unwinding into each other producing Gamma Ray photons.
    Does an electron travel through space like a threaded nut traveling down a threaded rod, with each twist cycle proportional to Planck’s Constant? Does it wind up on one end, while unwinding on the other end? Is this related to the Higgs field? Does this help explain the strange ½ spin of many subatomic particles?
    Alpha decay occurs when the two protons and two neutrons (which are bound together by entangled tubes), become un-entangled from the rest of the nucleons
    . Beta decay occurs when the tube of a down quark/gluon in a neutron becomes overtwisted and breaks producing a twisted torus (neutrino) and an up quark, and the ejected electron. The phenomenon of Supercoiling involving twist and writhe cycles may reveal how overtwisted quarks can produce these new particles. The conversion of twists into writhes, and vice-versa, is an interesting process.
    Gamma photons are produced when a tube unwinds producing electromagnetic waves.

    3:20 Black hole , Big Bang ,
    "If you would just, in this room, just twist time and space the right way, you might create an entirely new universe. It's not clear you could get into that universe, but you would create it."
    "So it could be that this universe is merely the science fair project of a kid in another universe," Shostak added. "I don't know how that affects your theological leanings, but it is something to consider."
    Filippenko stressed that such statements are not attacks on the existence of God. Saying the Big Bang - a massive expansion 13.7 billion years ago that blew space up like a gigantic balloon - could have occurred without God is a far cry from saying that God doesn't exist, he said.
    "I don't think you can use science to either prove or disprove the existence of God," Filippenko said.
    'Why are there laws of physics?'" he said. "And you could say, 'Well, that required a divine creator, who created these laws of physics and the spark that led from the laws of physics to these universes, maybe more than one.'"
    But that answer just continues to kick the can down the road, because you still need to explain where the divine creator came from. The process leads to a never-ending chain that always leaves you short of the ultimate answer, Filippenko said.
    The origin of the laws of physics remains a mystery for now, he added, one that we may never be able to solve.
    "The 'divine spark' was whatever produced the laws of physics," Filippenko said. "And I don't know what produced that divine spark. So let's just leave it at the laws of physics."

Knowledge is the skill, the know how. But it is not understanding. Understanding can only be acquired by identifying a larger containing whole, where the observed object is only a part. The direction of inquiry is opposite to analysis. It is called synthesis. Try this avenue, I find it more productive in the quest to understand the world.

    The answers are so eloquent and simple, that to the educated contemporary, they may seem preposterous. Sadly, physics occasionally overlooks the simplicity in favor of the details. Quantum mechanics and Einstein reconcile through the gravity. (It is impossible to calculate to the precise center of the planet.) [ "I" exists as a single point, devoid of dimension- a true null.] The closer approximate the source, the more intense is gravity. Base nine is a priori, Base ten is manifestation-- or, the "exhalation" of base Nine. Therefore, Manifestation is always in a state of becoming. The a posteriori that we construct through space/time becomes/history. Gravity is simply the passing of both bases across an equal expanse=== == === ...= and covering all point(s) synchronic. Frequency exists across their unique scale. At Source, there is no gravity.

    Magnetism is 'quantum'. Gravity is 'quantum'....One acts coherently, the other, incoherently. All mass emits incoherent or 'full spectrum' magnetism. Or think of magnetism as coherent gravity, of a certain, narrow wavelength range. This will lead you to understand quantum entanglement better. This, in part, enabled me to predict ferromagnetic glass 13 years before it was discovered.

    Gravity is continuous. There are quantum units of mass because nucleons have at their core a “neutralized” charge pair from the quark construction and these charge pairs do not disappear, instead they become a Planck freq photon which is now trapped over its own event horizon. This is matter unit.
    Time is a compact dimension. A single Planck second. Just enough time to rotate from past to present to present to future. This is charge. Negative is divergence (despite convention) it is expansive, from past to present. Positive charge is rotation from present to future. Convergence. This is why mass is associated with positive on this side of temporal membrane. Because the future is more dense. Gravity makes the next moment more dense.
    Neutron decay cosmology. The neutrons which invert at moment of neutron star collapse into black hole are transported via marangoni current to the surface of the universe, the lowest energy points in space, deep voids. There they travel 14ish relativistic minutes then decay into amorphous atomic hydrogen which causes a size increase of 10^14 times. This is lambda. This topology maintains the balance of the universe.
    The cmb is surface of visible universe but only this. We can only get an idea of local universe.
    The early stages of Big Bang are the neutron decay until formation into scintillating gas lensed all to heck by the entire visible universe. A single photon would be smeared across the sky.
    The Hubble Doppler is the curve in spacetime caused by the gravity of visible universe. EinsteinBranDicke I believe this notion is called.

      Gravity as Continuous: The assertion is that gravity is a continuous force, and the underlying reason is related to the quark construction of nucleons and their transformation into Planck frequency photons trapped over their event horizon. This is not a standard view in mainstream physics.
      Time as a Compact Dimension: This is a more speculative idea, suggesting that time is fundamentally quantized into discrete units, with each unit representing a Planck second. The rotation from past to present to future is described in terms of charge. The association of negative and positive charges with temporal rotation is an unconventional interpretation.
      Neutron Decay Cosmology: This theory proposes that when neutron stars collapse into black holes, the neutrons undergo a transformation and eventually surface at the universe's boundaries. As they decay, they contribute to the universe's expansion. This is not a standard cosmological model, and the idea of neutrons traveling to the "surface of the universe" is a novel concept.
      Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB): The claim here is that the CMB represents the surface of the visible universe and provides insights only into our local cosmic environment. While the CMB is indeed a snapshot of the early universe, the interpretation given in the comment is not consistent with mainstream cosmological views.
      Hubble Doppler and EinsteinBranDicke: The Hubble Doppler effect typically refers to the redshift of galaxies as they move away from us due to the universe's expansion. The comment seems to associate this with the curvature of spacetime due to the visible universe's gravity. The mention of "EinsteinBranDicke" likely refers to the Brans-Dicke theory, a scalar-tensor theory of gravity that was an alternative to General Relativity. However, the connection between the Hubble Doppler effect and the Brans-Dicke theory isn't clear from the comment.
      While the ideas presented by @KaliFissure are intriguing, they are not mainstream views in the scientific community. Many of these ideas would require rigorous mathematical formulation, experimental evidence, and peer review to be considered viable theories within the framework of modern physics.

    That is all getting so close. The one element missing is an explanation as to why to make a particle (a large parcel of energy) move through space at an ever increasing speed you have to add an exponential amount of energy to make the particle approach the speed of light. Why is that? “That is just the way it is because of the Universal Constant” is not an answer. A better answer would be that the particle is moving through a field and that field becomes energized by the movement of the particle and the energy being applied is being imparted exponentially to the field. It is the field energy that gives the particle its mass. The inside out of that is the energy of the protons and the neutrons is contained and restrained by the exact same relationship. The quarks are the particle energy, and it is that particle energy reacting with the surrounding field, energizing the field in the same manner that is perceived as the nuclear strong force that contains the quarks, and the field energy dissipates as the square of the distance to create the nuclear weak force at one distance and then Gravity at another. Gravity isn’t a “curvature” of space time, it is field energy intensity gradient between empty space and the energy boundary of Protons and Neutrons. Particles move from the lowest field energy intensity (densest field of empty space) towards the highest field energy intensity and that field energy intensity gradient is gravity, and the energy source of the movement is from the particle itself acting against the field. Ie not a mystical force of attraction. Accumulations of matter increase the energy intensity gradient and matter moves faster towards it determined by the gradient (Gravity). So the strong Nuclear Force, the Weak Nuclear Force, and Gravity are all the same Force, energized 100% elastically by the particle energy acting against the Universal Field (the Higgs Field), very much as Nima alluded to.

    Smaller distances are much harder to separate the smaller it is the more harder it is to separate so you need a tremendous amount of energy to separate the small distances. The smaller it becomes the more energy you need. That's why you have the hadron collider. Another way of looking at it is the energy it takes to hold these tiny spaces together is so powerful and strong that we need something like the hadron collider to be able to break this up.

      Unfortunately for Nima's proposition, energy is made up of photons, light particles, but distance or space is a somewhat arbitrary measurement. Basically it doesn't matter how many photons that is how much energy one directs at a certain point in space it's not going to create a black hole. The Universe isn't that flimsy. Black holes are merely one kind of explanation for certain astrophysical phenomena but not the only one. Did you get all that?

    You cannot make a miniature black hole. A black hole has never been created or measured with particle accelerators. It was pure speculation before the first collider came online. The idea was based on faulty math! And you use this faulty math as a way to explain quantum gravity? LOL.
    The reason for Heisenberg's Uncertainty Principle, why the velocity and trajectory of the particle cannot be measured simultaneously is because the particle when it's measured converts into information. The particle is way too small to measure both trajectory and velocity at the same time because the particle converts completely into the information upon being measured. Thus they can only be measured one particle at a time.
    Besides, if you knew what's causing gravity in mass you would understand why gravity cannot be measured at the Planck length. Gravity doesn't emerge until mass reaches a certain size and shape for this action to take place. Gravity does not happen at the quantum scale because the area around an atom or particle is way too tiny to produce the reactions pinned on gravity.
    This is not an advertisement. I just want you to know the answers are out there if you know where to look and what to look for. I found what is causing the observations pinned on dark matter and dark energy. Solving those two mysteries alone makes the books worth their weight in gold. I offer the books at the cost of publishing, printing the number of pages and shipping. I don't make a profit off them. Check them out, you won't find books with the same quality of information at that price anywhere. I recommend the paperbacks because they don't cost much. I wrote the series of quips explaining the cause of gravity, dark matter, dark energy, and many other mysteries of the universe in great detail. They're called SECRET UNIVERSE by Ron Kemp, books GRAVITY, ENERGY, FREQUENCY, VIBRATION, KINEMATICS in that order. The next book will be done before December. It will tie all previous books together.
