Congratulations on completing the Desert Wanderings period! Jeff Cavins joins Fr. Mike to introduce the fifth biblical period, Conquest and Judges. They discuss the trials the Israelites face as they enter the Promised Land. We learn that the book of Joshua and the book of Judges are characterized by Israel's unfaithfulness, destruction, and repentance.
We hear everyday from our community how The Bible in a Year helps to capture hearts and souls for Christ. While we’re happy to make it free to our audience, it’s not free to create! Lord Jesus, I humbly pray for myself, Father Mike, and all the people participating in the Bible-in-Year podcast. May your word take deep root in our hearts and transform our ways of thinking, deciding, and acting. May your grace open our ears to hear and understand the word of God in the Scriptures that we may revere and treasure both the Old and the New Testaments which God has prepared for all who desire to enter his kingdom. Send us your Holy Spirit to give us the Spirit of Knowledge, that we may know God and know ourselves. Give us the grace to approach the Word of God with meekness and humility, and with an eagerness to do everything God desires. Help us to be diligent students and faithful disciples of your Word. May our hearts never grow dull and may our ears never tire of listening to your voice. Amen.

If I didn’t live with the truth of presuming Christ would never leave me I would live depressed every day of my life, scared to death and unsure of whether or not God love us. I have been in that dark hole and it is awful. Thank God for Jesus Christ who died for all :)

Joshua 2:9 "all the inhabitants of the land melt in fear before you." I believe that means that the Canaanites who feared the Lord had fled, and only the hard-hearted remained in Jericho.

I have noticed that I am more likely to fall lately than when I was younger. I think of it as God helping me be more humble, so when I fall, I say a prayer of thanks while I'm down there and ask for help standing back up.

Through trials and tribulation God gives an opening…do you choose to trust or deny Him? Do you turn away or turn to Him? 2020 was a tough year for many of us, Covid was terrible, but the trials I faced then, turned me towards Him. Without it, maybe there would have been no change in me 🤔. It’s not about the curses…awesome introduction.

Sin and unfaithfulness. Destruction. Repentance. Sin and unfaithfulness. Destruction. Repentance. Sin and unfaithfulness. Destruction. Repentance. I wonder how many times this deadly cycle repeats in the Old Testament. It seems like that is all the Old Testament is.
We truly have a merciful and gracious God, who is slow to anger and abounding in steadfast love and faithfulness. With the cycle of faithlessness and sin of the Israelites, humanity would no longer exist if we did not have the one, true, living God! Anything less would have destroyed humans for their unfaithfulness.
    God bless!
    Vivat Jesus!

    Summary
The context discusses the book of Joshua and the conquest of Canaan. The Israelites have been in boot camp for a year at Mount Sinai, and now it's showtime. They are going to take Jericho and divide and conquer with a southern and northern campaign. They settle into the land, but they don't do what God commanded them to do. The book of Joshua comes to an end, and then they move into the period of Judges. The main character is Joshua, and he takes them across the Jordan River. The waters are rolled back all the way to a city called Adam, and they circumcise the young men who they didn't in the desert. The Canaanite god system worships Baal, and the very first thing that God is going to do in going into the land is he's going to move that water all the way upstream. The period of Judges is going to be difficult, and Israel is going to go through a rocky road of doing everything what's right in their own eyes. The next period they're going to enter is the royal kingdom, and Israel is finally going to say they want a king.
    Notes
Approaching scripture with the right attitude
Approach scripture with trust in God's faithfulness, mercy, and justice
Avoid the temptation to make God on trial or view the stories as impersonal
Remember that the stories were written for the reader and reveal both God and ourselves
Challenge yourself to have a faithful attitude as you read the stories
    The period of the conquest
Israel goes through a period of conquest as they enter the promised land
They take Jericho and divide and conquer with a southern and northern campaign
They settle into the land but do not do everything God commanded them to do
All of the land is divided up among tribes, with the exception of Joseph and the Levites
Preparing for the period of judges
Israel is about to enter the period of judges
This period will bring up many questions about why things happened and what about the innocent
It is important to take stock of your own heart and be faithful to God's plan
The next period will be the royal kingdom, where Israel finally asks for a king

While listening to Joshua, I realized that the war of extermination is actually completely justifiable for a simple fact: those who feared the Lord could have fled the Israelites. Those who were destroyed were the ones standing in the way of God and, as such, God called the Israelites to destroy the whole city. This may be why when the Israelites obliterated a town, then we come back to the town and there are still people. ... The difference between these "wars of extermination" and genocide is that, like the Holocaust, the whole point was to eliminate a group of people whereas these "wars of extermination" simply wiped out who was in a geographic location: people could have fled, and did not because they did not fear the Lord.
As such... Completely justifiable and I see no qualms with the "wars of extermination" in Joshua.
