  • How does Boohoo get away with paying below the minimum wage in England? How can Pretty Little Thing sell its clothes so cheaply?
The planet is being overwhelmed with clothes. Close to 56 million tonnes of clothes are sold every year. In Europe, the amount purchased has almost doubled since the year 2000. Thanks to fast disposable fashion, you can constantly renew your wardrobe. But producing clothes at such a low price has a very high environmental cost. Textiles are the second most polluting industry in the world, after oil.
Creating a dress for ten euros in Europe, in less than a fortnight. It’s not only possible, but it’s becoming the norm. Since the fashion industry went down the path of fast fashion, it’s always both faster and cheaper - no matter the consequences.
Let’s start with those suffering the most: the workers. They work between 12 and 15 hours a day for salaries less than half the legal minimum wage. And in abominable working conditions.
According to the brands, they no longer have time to create. In order to satisfy an insatiable consumer appetite, copying the competition’s models makes things go faster and cheaper - even if it means risking a court case now and then.

There's a reason they call them sweat shops.

Let's be honest all those textile companies in Leicester back when all those women were working they also worked for near to nothing wage and with barely few to no benefits. Nothing much has changed other than it's just more frowned upon now.

So I have only been questioned once by a friend about where do I get my clothes done or about where I get my fabrics from.

People won't buy from them once they know who is behind the company. It's corruption and these people need protection.

@@balance3201 it's not cheap to buy, it's just produced and made cheap. There is a difference! Boohoo clothing is renowned for being poor quality. Women are fickle, once they buy something they don't like the quality, they will never buy from that company again. Boohoo is one of those companies you only buy from once because it's poor quality. This just tops it off. The government will shut these factories down. It's illegal, there are also illegal family members from Pakistan who come over for a holiday and never went back. They have to accept £3 an hour they have no National insurance number. Shut this place down before the public burn it down!!!

@@MONEYLAB001 that's not true. About every corporation does this and people still buy. I think a lot of people know that but the thing is ethical clothing or other products is too expensive and the competition of ethical shops are quashed by the cheap pricing of large corporate clothing and other products. It's inevitable to buy something that hasn't been made by exploited labour. And then the capitalists make excuses like "yeah you criticise for what we do yet you buy our stuff". It's all a trap. People know, we just can't avoid it unless we all decide to live primitively which we can't happen as we can't adapt to that sort of environment.

@catch22crypto science got exposed, but people are still buying that's because at the end of the day society is self centered.

The clothes from this company are atrocious. I bought from them once years ago and never did again. The quality was horrible, the material very cheap, the high heels I bought were cut very badly. Never again.

"Workshops are a hidden world with cameras not welcome" - very few places will allow cameras on site, as it is not company policy.
