This is why you're one of my favorite reviewers, you think how I think. 1. "I gotta stick some fuzz on this." 2. "I wonder what my neighbors think about these weird sounds coming out of my house?"
Good in depth review Ryan, thank you, much appreciated! Been wanting a baritone for a long time and this I think is the one! I like the fact that Gretsch keeps the Gretsch name even on their import models, unlike Fender/Squier or Gibson/Epiphone. Not that it's a deal breaker, but still very nice.
Just picked one up today and I love it I have the non tremolo version it looks and sound amazing and the build quality is good as well Thanks for the great input and cool video!!!
Am definitely impressed by the Gretch. I think the 30-inch scale length would be my choice over the 27-inch scale. It would be cool to see in "P-bucker" pickup replacement at the bridge of the Squier. Just a thought.
I have both 27" and 30" scale baritones in my stable and they're very different beasts! Any serious baritoner should look at both scale lengths because they each offer such contrasting possibilities. Fortunately you can still pick up reasonable deals (around $400?) on used Dano baris, which are all 30" scale I think, but the tone of their lipstick pups push them up nicely a bit in the twang dept. That Gretsch sure sounds sweet, and I love the Bigsby (I have one on my bari Tele). You make a good point mentioning string tension and gauge; the feel and performance of a bari is greatly affected by one's choice of tuning and appropriate string gauge. My 30" bari is an 8 string that I built on a Bronco bass platform. It's still a 6 course, but the middle two strings have octaves (similar to some Taylor 8 string acoustic baris - you should hear those!). It has an old Dano lipstick at the bridge and a 60s Teisco goldfoil towards the center/neck. Wish I could post a pic... As you can see, I'm a bit of a bari freak; Squier really needs to get another reasonable and quality baritone offering coming down the pike ASAP.
I modded a squier cabronita bari neck to fit an affinity jazzmaster and it’s sweet but I’m still trying to decide what kinda pickups I wanna replace the stock ones with. Squier didn’t have enough baritone options so I had to make one
Hearing about your custom bari was really neat! I've thought about octaving a couple strings like that before but it's kinda hard to get a nut/bridge for that lol Awesome to hear that you have your own personal thing!!
First, that looks great. The silver and black is nice. Second, tuning to ‘A’ seems great for the 30” scale. Third, I’d love some actual Filtertrons or Powertrons instead of the mini-humbuckers. Fourth, the ambient stuff @ ~28:00 sounds really, really good. Stay grounded.
I have this axe and LIKE IT... I tried it tuned to A and to B and like A better... I got mine for $599 with free shipping from a dealer on Reverb some months ago... I wish I could find a correct roller bridge for it. I wish I could find the Squier bass vi with wiggle stick in Olympic white for $499... You can get them in black NEW for $499! I’d set it up as a baritone.... I enjoy your channel Ryan, and the way you explore, like with that Wampler !
That scale length is nearly a BASS VI, makes me think you could probably tune a Bass VI to at least A-A with the right string guage. I love how Bass VI looks and who doesn't love 3 jag style pickups, thats one more than a jag.
When these originally came out they were tuned like Bass VI. They changed it to baritone tuning when Squier put out an Bass vi. Wether it was connected I dont know, but it was about the same time.
I have a Schecter ultra 6 I bought 10-12 years ago. I tune e standard 1 octave down. Strings are 85-20 if I recall correctly. It plays smooth, has good clarity, a very versatile instrument. I like it because I can venture into the upper octave of the standard tuned bass guitar and the lower octave of the standard tuned guitar.
After reading the comment that it was originally marketed as a bass vi, I really want to see how it does restrung. The tele is unbelievable for the price but if the gretsch can convert to a bass vi easily, I'd buy one. Thanks!
Which Gretsch model do you think you’d like to have? The Electromatics are good, but I really LOVE my Country Gentleman! They’re expensive, but if you try one that’s properly set up, you’re gonna love it.
I bought a PRS SE Steve Muchon baritone. It's a really nice sounding and playing instrument, and I paid around $700 for it, which is a lot of money for me. But it's been worth every dime. I didn't want to get on the PRS train, but I did. I, also too, love the Fireballs from Sweetwater.
Looks nice, but doesn't seem like there's a lefty. May have to stick with Danelectro for a baritone. Though if Gretsch ever offers the lefty, I'd much prefer it, I think.
Seems like Fender killed off the Squier Paranormal line, including the Baritone Teles, Offset Teles, etc. Their website only has Super-Sonic and Cyclone now, this is really sad... :(
@@60CycleHumcast I see... Well, hopefully some shops will still have them here in stock later this year. People don't seem to care about offsets or unique looking guitars here, for some reason.
You opened Pandora's Box when that Fuzz kicked on! Hahaha! Such an amazingly classy instrument though. I like the black one alot too. Would love to own one eventually. How cool are those Bigsbys too. I'm usually a hardtail fan. But those Bigsbys are awesome, They look super cool too.
I just got one of these earlier this month. So far I love it. It just sounds so powerful. The guitar just vibrates your whole body as you hit those lower notes. However I noticed a dramatic difference between the volume of the bridge and the neck pickup. I hear the same thing on yours. Normally I’d just raise the neck pickup to get the volume close to the bridge, but those two screws just loosen the pickup, they don’t raise the height. The only other thing, I wish the tone knob reduced the bass instead of the treble. But that might change if I could raise that neck pickup.
Thanks for the review! I wonder, if this is the follow up of the G5265 Jet Baritone which seems to be discontinuied? I got a black sparkle one around 10 years ago and am curious, wether the specs are close to each other.
Chapman has a 28 inch scale in case someone is looking for that in-between scale. The pickups are medium output humbuckers but probably voiced more "modern" than those Gretsch pickups. I quite like mine in drop G.
i think the 55 point inspection just confirms the guitar is in non returnable condition, lol. They might do setups on higher end guitars but i doubt they did anything with this one.

I have a standard size guitar that I converted into a baritone tuned guitar, as I enjoy the low pitch. I've since converted that guitar back to standard tuning, and have started using the "Poly Capo" block on my HX Stomp to switch to baritone pitch. Works pretty well, can be instantly done, and doesn't change the string length or require another guitar and strings. Technology to the rescue.
As a bass player by trade and a studio guitar geek that may just be the ticket. I just wish the jade gray version also came with the wiggle stick. That would have me sold for sure.
I am both a guitar and bass player Wax chillin in a shop one day and they had all vintage used gear. We used to jam there a lot; as the owner played everthing. His son was playing the drums, so I grabbed a Bass VI squire and didn’t realize it was a bass vi till I felt 6 strings. Was the “pawn” version. Let me just say, I have this thing about Squire. I am a fender freak and can’t stand cheesy fender. Like I want nitro lacquer vintage spec correct herl truss if it’s gonna be called vintage it should be vintage spec 🤷🏻♂️ Anyways…. That thing…. It played like my geddy Lee mij bass. After we jammed the owner told he to tune it open like I play my guitars and throw Verb on….😮😮😮😮 Dude… it’s a bass and the baddest rhythm guitar ever ever. I am a rhythm player. This thing through my Shoegaze board was insanity with a rubberneck delay and stereo reverb. Let’s just say if I could only have one guitar as a bass/guitar player.. a baritone like the bass vi is ideal. This longer 30” scale is what I’d get though, cause I have a bass and plenty of guitars. Also, he called this a squire line. No. Yes, price wise. But an electromatic and epiphone are in another league - as in better than Squire. The bass vI and Tele baritone being the standouts as that pawn shop did sound good. And mij squire is nicer than American of today 😆… big overall nothing close to the quality in parts of epiphone and Gretsch. Let’s just put it this way… Most squire guys pay 350 for the guitar and swap out like all of it. 🤷🏻♂️ making it a 600 or more guitar. I never think of that with a Gretsch electro or epiphone. Only squires… and I own none. Other that love em ALL say “but… I swapped this this this this …” Then just buy a Mexican made that are imo better than American these days. It’s the new MIJ
It's a Gretch. Ever since I bought my Jet 10 years ago my Les Paul never sees the light of day. They are such an under appreciated brand. My son has 3 and just pounds on them. He has a jet and two hollow bodies.
Very true. I have the 3 pickup g5622t I think? A bad ass green with 50’s teardrop centerline hollow body shape. It’s insane and I only paid 200 for it. Was a wall hanger some rich dude had and the set screw was loose on volume so he thought it was shot. lol He wanted 500 cause it was never played and he had case and all the case goodies. His wife just bought as something to look at 😳. Neither played. I noticed the screw and offered $200 cause I had that much on me. He took it. Got home, screwdriver tightened set screw…. it and it’s perfect. I set it up. Worth 200 😂 But I want this 30 inch. Ideally im a Fender guy. And I love jaguars. I play bass too and tried a squire bass vi but I can’t stand squire ESPECIALLY WHEN GRETSCH electros are so cheap and insanely well made for very little more. My Tele partcaster warmoth neck is defective. Might just make that into a 63’ baritone lol. I know they don’t exist but I made mine to match a 60-63 tele. Allparts has b srock necks cheap with dings or ugly spots but only cosmetic blems… Well I been relicing fenders for 20 years. A blem at 1/3 the cost to me is almost wanted cause I am gonna blemish it a whole lot more 😆
I bought one a few month ago. Fantastic quality for what you pay. A great instrument. Also have a Japanese made duo jet. I think its the best made guitar i own.
I got one just like it a few months ago. It's an inspiration machine. A trippy spaghetti-western journey. Yes, lower the action from the factory. The one minus... it weighs a TON.
Came from your EART guitar unboxing- must say, I miss on this Gretsch a tighter bottom end and a bit of sparkle... 🤷🏻♂️ edit: oh , just noticed it's a baritone Gretsch... so, my comment above is kinda obsolete...😏
As it comes to other baritone-sized necks, Warmoth makes Strat and Tele baritone conversion necks at 28.6" length. That would put you halfway between the Gretsch and the Tele - you just need a few hundred bucks and a vintage spec body to bolt it to.
I really regret not getting that Squier when I had the chance. Ended up gettin the Gretsch non wiggle stick version. Would jump on the Squier of they were to bring them out again. The Gretsch was initially designed as a Bass VI I read somewhere
Great review! As soon as you kicked on the reverb on the Gretsch I was sold. Just curious: Is there an option for a whammy bar on the Squier? A baritone without a whammy bar seems naked to me
30” scale, that’s just a short scale bass with extra strings! As a 14 year bass player, I suddenly find myself wanting one! You always have interesting ways to get my GAS going. Thanks, I think 🤣
Nah, not really. Baritone guitars play much more like regular guitars than bass... They're great, and fun to play (I have a baritone acoustic) but if you've only played bass and don't know chord shapes and such, you're not going to be able to just pick it up. You're going to want to learn how to play guitar first.
Nothing sounds better than a baritone with drippy surf reverb. It's primal. IMHO though, unless you're playing heavy metal, fuzz isn't the best effect to use on a baritone. It destroys the voice in the mix, again,... my opinion. I like hearing the distinct undercurrent of a good rhythm pulsing and driving the sonic landscape. I have a Hagstrom Viking semihollow Baritone in a burst finish. I just love the piano-like chime. Great for dark ambiance. Duane Eddy used it in the early days and a lot of guitarists started to apply baritone to country, surf, spaghetti western soundtracks, and more recently heavy metal. I think it's underutilized in surf music and has more potential for creating a mood under the waves, like a Jules Verne theme track or a new 'Rickover's Dream' (Michael Hedges - RIP)
Great. Started guitar four months ago at 51 yrs old and now have six electrics (LP/strat/super-strat/tele/semi-hollow body and a generation EXP with piezo) and one acoustic. I thought I had my bases covered, but now must have baritone! thanks =/
I have a Danelectro baritone, and I have tried fender VI stings. It works, as it is also 29-3/4” in scale. The low E is a little flubby, but it works. But overall, these are best tuned to B.
Do you mean the Danelectro baritone is best tuned to “B” all the time, or just when using bass six strings, What can you do with a real baritone grr you can’t do with say a Fender bass six? And vice versa? Do you really Need one of each to avoid compromise? Thanks. Mark in Mass.
@@h.markhorton8188 I find, with this scale length, that tuning to B gets the best of both worlds: you can riff in the guitar and bass realm, but chords still sound pleasing. Those are D’Addario baritone strings I use, personally. Fender VI strings are just a littler too low. They still work, but I was hoping to get a short scale bass sound, and that wasn’t my experience on the Danelectro. But, you can buy a set and try. I didn’t find the tension to be that different, so I didn’t bother with a set up.
Also, unlike fender or Gibson, you can actually afford 60s era vintage. All killer, no filler brand across every price range.

Works pretty well, can be instantly done, and doesn't change the string length or require another guitar and strings. Technology to the rescue.
I don't know if it's the guitar, the set up, or the dude, but the combination is making great sounds!

As a bass player by trade and a studio guitar geek that may just be the ticket. I just wish the jade gray version also came with the wiggle stick. That would have me sold for sure.
Look into a Duesenberg Les Trem for it!
@@mbrooks0711 not the original poster, but I'm in a similar situation with the London Grey. Buying one of these on yoru recommendation!
I am both a guitar and bass player
Wax chillin in a shop one day and they had all vintage used gear.
Like I want nitro lacquer vintage spec correct herl truss if it’s gonna be called vintage it should be vintage spec 🤷🏻♂️
Anyways…. That thing…. It played like my geddy Lee mij bass.
After we jammed the owner told he to tune it open like I play my guitars and throw Verb on….😮😮😮😮
Dude… it’s a bass and the baddest rhythm guitar ever ever.
Let’s just put it this way…
Most squire guys pay 350 for the guitar and swap out like all of it. 🤷🏻♂️ making it a 600 or more guitar.
I never think of that with a Gretsch electro or epiphone. Only squires… and I own none. Other that love em ALL say “but… I swapped this this this this …”
Then just buy a Mexican made that are imo better than American these days.
It’s the new MIJ
Bless you for reviewing with actual clean tone
These are strap locks, i have them on my Electromatic. Take them off, put your strap under them and put the Pins back on the guitar :-)
Yes, icing on the cake!!! ☯️
It's a Gretch. Ever since I bought my Jet 10 years ago my Les Paul never sees the light of day. They are such an under appreciated brand. My son has 3 and just pounds on them. He has a jet and two hollow bodies.
I just bought my first Gretsch about a month ago. It's the G5230T Electromatic in airline silver. I love it.
I have the hardtail of this baritone. Only issue I have is resonant string noise - I need to find some foam. How are the hollow-bodies?
Very true. I have the 3 pickup g5622t I think? A bad ass green with 50’s teardrop centerline hollow body shape.
It’s insane and I only paid 200 for it.
Was a wall hanger some rich dude had and the set screw was loose on volume so he thought it was shot. lol
He wanted 500 cause it was never played and he had case and all the case goodies. His wife just bought as something to look at 😳. Neither played.
I noticed the screw and offered $200 cause I had that much on me. He took it.
Got home, screwdriver tightened set screw…. it and it’s perfect.
I set it up. Worth 200 😂
But I want this 30 inch.
Allparts has b srock necks cheap with dings or ugly spots but only cosmetic blems…
Well I been relicing fenders for 20 years.
A blem at 1/3 the cost to me is almost wanted cause I am gonna blemish it a whole lot more 😆
Check official Loathe - Gored (Guitar Playthrough)
to see how low this instrument can go :)
Honestly, Loathe is why I want one of these (and Andrew Baena, but he got one bc of Loathe)
I bought one a few month ago. Fantastic quality for what you pay. A great instrument. Also have a Japanese made duo jet. I think its the best made guitar i own.
Sounds great! I just bought my first Gretsch recently. It's a Streamliner Jet Jr. Humbucker/ P-90. I love it. Built like a tank!
I got one just like it a few months ago. It's an inspiration machine. A trippy spaghetti-western journey. Yes, lower the action from the factory. The one minus... it weighs a TON.
its like 9 lbs if i had to guess.
@@60CycleHumcast so it stands... a ton it is. 🙃
@@60CycleHumcast Mine weighed in at 9.5lbs
My custom Jazz bass that I made entirely out of Purpleheart weighs 18 pounds 😂
Came from your EART guitar unboxing- must say, I miss on this Gretsch a tighter bottom end and a bit of sparkle... 🤷🏻♂️
edit: oh , just noticed it's a baritone Gretsch... so, my comment above is kinda obsolete...😏
As it comes to other baritone-sized necks, Warmoth makes Strat and Tele baritone conversion necks at 28.6" length. That would put you halfway between the Gretsch and the Tele - you just need a few hundred bucks and a vintage spec body to bolt it to.
Fender also sells conversion necks. 27” and 22 frets. The warmoth necks are 24 frets. If this specs matter to you
That tremolo and reverb sound is ~C H E F F K I S S~
I have a Bigsby-less version and strung it up as a Bass VI. Works great. Only the wiring/pots needs some work. Quite noisy.
I really regret not getting that Squier when I had the chance. Ended up gettin the Gretsch non wiggle stick version. Would jump on the Squier of they were to bring them out again. The Gretsch was initially designed as a Bass VI I read somewhere
I might actually have to pick one up to use with my bass rig. I'm mostly playing Doom Metal and Acid Rock nowadays and this thing is perf.
Great review! As soon as you kicked on the reverb on the Gretsch I was sold. Just curious: Is there an option for a whammy bar on the Squier? A baritone without a whammy bar seems naked to me
I think it sounds incredible. Having said that, if you decide to sell the Squier, I'm all in. I'll buy it for sure.
I'm going to buy one now. I love the midnight sapphire blue.
@@cloudshad0ws a bass vi is a short scale bass....
@@Ramble1234 ok... But that's different than a baritone guitar.
You can definitely use fuzz on a baritone if you want to DOOM but you need the right fuzz
Great. Started guitar four months ago at 51 yrs old and now have six electrics (LP/strat/super-strat/tele/semi-hollow body and a generation EXP with piezo) and one acoustic. I thought I had my bases covered, but now must have baritone! thanks =/
You definitely don’t need 6 guitars if you started 4 months ago lol. But I am jealous. 😂
Reverend Descent W can be bought fairly easily. Great baritone.
GRETCH for people over 6 foot 12 only.😂🤣😂
im 5'15"
@@60CycleHumcast Sorry to hear that. Perhaps a Spell on the RACK might help.😮😯😲
@@h.markhorton8188 ua-cam.com/video/c54JdXzl2t0/v-deo.html
This is my band, using two baritones, tunes to B.
You should start a doom band! That sounds gnarly with fuzz!
