I can not wait for your skillet to hit your store! I am on every Sunday morning within the first hour and never have been able to get a cold handle skillet sadly. I actually think your design might be way better though.
Am surprised a ball-peen hammer isn't being used. The ball doesn't have to be big either to aggressively shape softened metal. For example, I can use a ball-peen hammer the size of a tack hammer to rivet mild steel plates together using solid (albeit soft steel) rivets. To rivet, use the ball end of the hammer on the edge of the rivet, and work your way around the edge to make a nice mushroom dome. Don't start in the middle.
So you'll have work handles on the piece during shaping, try leaving tabs that extend beyond the final circumference. Cut them off after the final shape is reached. If you want to smoothen a surface afterwards then a planishing hammer will work. Good Effort - Never Give Up!
Looks good to me
I love this idea!
I'm curious if there's a way to use a press with your concrete mold on the bottom, the heated sheet metal in the middle, and a smaller rounded piece on the end of the press to push the sheet metal into the mold in order to save time vs hand hammering the sheet metal? Perhaps it's the hand built part of the idea that you really enjoy though, vs. mass production.
I imagine that using a press like i described would also keep the thickness of the metal more uniform throughout the pan - I know from auotbody repair back in the day that every strike with a hammer over sheet metal will thin it out... Perhaps it's not a huge concern?
Figured I'd mention it anyway.
Pressed or hand hammered, I don't care - this idea is awesome AF, and I'll be looking for the finished product over the next few weeks!!!!
I've consistently tried for the cold handle skillets to no avail. Maybe I'll be more lucky in the future with your skillet instead.
It appears all my comments and anything that I leave gets deleted either by you or by UA-cam so I guess you’ll be losing me as a subscriber. Good luck in the future.
One enhancement is to drill a hole in the end of the pipe or weld a ring on the end to hang from your pack.
most cant watch this video
Here it is again folks. This guy just cannot be stopped. Another item we didn't know we needed. But we do. 07.
Brother, that is a true labor of love that you were doing right there, you’re sharing the love and the wealth of information that you have so people can survive. Keep doing what you doing brother because it is truly appreciated.
Anchors away & Semper Fi
Nice pan. Firebox has a similar design, and they use pot lifters… Olicamp and Trangia along with tons of generic companies make them. That’s always an option too; just won’t be able to hang it as you did in the video. But they work awesome!
Another hit kind Sir!
By golly I have never seen such fast hammering😂
Hi Two Track, it’s One Track from Australia here. Sovereign Hill is an outdoor historic gold mining town (about 50 acres). One of the early businesses they rebuilt was a TinSmiths Foundry. I have been there countless times. They spin their skillets and gold pans, plates, bowls etc. It’s very fast, accurate and simple.
Cool if you could afford a lathe like that. The title does say DIY though
@@thomasdemaio53
With modern electric motors, a spinning lathe wouldn’t be overly significant. The tool rests are similar wood lather rests with 2 vertical pins. The rest is not that hard for a smart man to figure out.
@@cordellkent4790 it still wouldn't be worth it to make one or two. Forming metal via Spinning is an amazing process still
@@thomasdemaio53
I wasn’t talking with you about making two. I was suggesting to Corporal Kelly about an alternative method.
Shawn, at Sovereign Hill, see if you can find the ‘Soho Foundry’. It can give you a bit of an idea. I know you are dedicated to US Made. But I’m sure there would be places over there that do this kind of metal spinning.
I can't tell you what a joy it is for me to watch your videos.
Having a hard day having some hard times but you're videos Distract my mind even for a little while.
And they make me feel good. Thank you so much.
Brilliant video, Corporal! So love seeing all that you bring to your channel. Love our amazing Corporal! 🪵🏕🤗
I love your midweek builds. Definitely outside of the box.
"Outstanding " you've got some good idea's there and bringing them to life is great, keep after it
I really enjoy the midweek black smith/ forge videos.
Excellent video, I'm enjoying these videos. Always look forward to the next one.
For the handle. You can drill a couple holes and hot rivet it on instead of welding just a thought.
I am glad you told them black pipe....Galvanized pipe heated burns off into poisonous fumes. Another EXCELLENT video. Great projects while the weather is bad.
I will probably never forget anything but thank you for sharing your knowledge and how to with us
I admire your skills with metal working. It is an area I have of not to get into, but in which which I admire those who do it well. Awesome work.
I am especially impressed that you can swing that hammer so fast. 😊
Shawn, I didn’t know that you knew how to weld….just kidding. Good job, brother. Thanks for the video.
Thanks for all your videos. So cool seeing how these tools can be made. Like you say, no one's doing videos like these. Your content is much appreciated.
Awesome and outstanding as always. Thanks for sharing and taking us along.
Fantastic pan. But the first thing that I thought was that you also made a really beautiful plate.
Really liking these blacksmith videos of making stuff!
Good on you Shawn getting active in your forge & making things by yourself and I cant say if I have ever glazed over any of your videos mate I have been following you now for a few years and don't foresee me not.
Great job! Very unique. I would purchase one of those in a heartbeat! Handmade by one of America's finest. Yes please.
Nice video. I like it when you're focused on the how to, rather than the UA-cam woes. Keep these going, and I'll be watching you again. Great work, I'm gonna try that build.
Semper
Brilliant AF corporal. Looks fantastic. You make some outstanding things.
Was hoping you were gonna offer zip hoodies. Really nice looking little frying pan as well. Gonna keep my fingers crossed when those spoons and frying pans drop. You’re a real metal working artist Corp. Stay frosty AF. 👍
3:40... Stop now and you have a nice frontier plate
That's a lot work but you have skills thank you for the video
Outstanding! The fact that you work it through in your head and bring it to live is bass ass! Keep driving on!
Glad I came back to this after having to work out of town this week.
I recommend a hydraulic press that you can use to get the shape of your skillet. As well as your logo while it's hot
Bingo
Gotta hand it to you. Your ingenuity and resourcefulness are inspirational. BRAVO ZULU
Hand crafted is neither cheap nor fast, but will be a quality item. Looks like a good size for a backpack or minimalist load out.
Brother... YOU need a fly press!
Thanks for the video!
I appreciate you.
Have a great week. See you Sunday!
These forging videos are cool-keep them coming!
Awesome!!! Great direction for the channel with the midweek skills. A whole new level! Keep after it brother!
So cool to see something usable be made from just bare metal.
Thanks for the video, I usually learn something and always enjoy watching!
Hard work pays off. Great job. Live strong. Drive on.
I would seriously consider a hydrologic press for this item. You could also make steel plates for the kit as well. Stamp the plates, and then some of those plates could be further stamped into skillets. It would require some additional setup in the beginning, but make the process easier and faster in the end. Ultimately saving time and energy. That said, great work as is.
Right there at 3 min a frontier plate with a shallow bowl to catch the beef stew juices.
I don't care what UA-cam says I like this stuff.
Outflippin Standing
i got one of the pullover hoodie now i wish i would have waited but it ok keep up the good work
I feel the same way....
You're doing your thing brother. 👍 keep at it
Make a form that you can use with a simple hydraulic shop press. Cut your round pieces of metal heat them up put into the form and use the press to smash it in the form and instant shaping
Great job on the skillet!!!
Thanks for sharing this idea.
Looking forward to your next Mid-week video
Great idea! Steel skillets are so much lighter than cast iron, and cook well too. 👍
Education is a wonderful thing! ❤
Just as i was taught long ago. Perfect. I love your maker vids.
Great work Shawn. You’re a wealth of knowledge which you enjoy sharing. Can’t say thanks enough. Incredible work.
I like it. I'll be watching for the first batch.
Another outstanding video
Much respect! Looks laborious AF. Pan must season easily given the egg flip.
I commented a few weeks ago about having zip up hoodies instead of pullovers, glad you listened to that comment. I will be purchasing one soon.
Glad you suggested, I can't stand pullovers lol. I'll be ordering a zip up too!
Outstanding A.F video my friend
Hey Corp, just caught the midweek video and it is great content as always. After watching your video last Sunday I agree with you on the originality of your content and would say that despite the views, I enjoy you keeping an open mind on where to take your channel. These skills you are sharing are what brought me here and will keep me here. Also I love the additions to the etsy store every week. Always great products and continue to look forward to what you come up with next. Semper Fi
Outstanding.
From Western Australia to you.
Keep up the good work.
Glad you’re feeling better. I like that.
Did anyone else instinctually turn their head when he started welding?? Lol.
Nah. We just stare directly at it
Outstanding AF
Idea if you end up with a lot of demand for these; 12 ga for heat distribution, and a press system heating then pressing the pan portion into your desired form. *It may also be possible to have your logo stamped in as well during this process
Thank you for another mid-week video :) Another skillet, just what I don't need, but I'm going to keep on watching anyway!
i like the hollow handle design, that's smart. reminds me of a cold steel bushman. good thinking using black iron. that stuff makes a badass shovel handle too
Great Idea with Great Results!! Looks awesome and keep up the Great Videos!!
Outstanding work! I want to go through the apocolypse with you! Bravo Zulu!
Looks great. I’ll buy one
Modern day Kempart. Forget the Coleman store, good on ya corporal
Impressive. My first thought when I saw you cutting that out with a bandsaw was, "No way he can price those for the man hours it's going to take." The fact that you might be able to generate two an hour is very impressive. That's craftsmanship meeting efficiency. Love watching you work. That's for the how-to insight.
Sweet saw, man! Awesome work on the skillet too! I like the pickable length handle!
Corporal needs a press. Great video
Outstanding video again Shawn you are amazing woodsman
How awesome! You have some artistic skill, sir.
I'm sorry to say that due to an undiagnosed illness (we're waiting for test results and x-rays to be looked at) I missed this on Thursday. So, again, I missed out on the merch drop. Next time...
This is a pretty cool item. I purchased a "Viking" skillet from your Etsy store a couple weeks ago, and I have yet to clean it up. It has a hinged handle with the base riveted on the skillet so the hollow handle folds into the pan to make it more compact. Your skillet and this one I bought would easily fit in a poke bag for transport. Mine's slightly larger but yours is no less utilitarian. If it works....it works.
Keep up the good work, Shawn. Thank you for what you do. If you're interested, there's a gentleman in Canada that has a channel called The Woodland Escape, and he's building a small fort in the woods. His name's Peter Kelly, and he's calling it (ever so modestly) Kelly's Station. It's a throwback channel on life 250 years ago in northern North America. It's really pretty cool and informative. If you have an interest, give it a look.
Very nice midweek, thanks Shawn!
Awesome work your nailing the the black smithing
Been keeping an eye on your store thanks for the advanced notice. Just another benefit of watching all your videos.
Thank you for the mid-week video.
One of the things I like the most about your channel, and one of the things you consistently do is teaching us to find different and simpler approaches to a situation in order to solve a problem. I've said before and say it again: this channel is *amazing*.
Hey Corporal how are you doing Brother......I have never done metal work but I absolutely do appreciate the skill set....it looks very labor intensive even if you make it look easy.....
My Facebook fan group and I are always looking forward to seeing what you do next !!!!
And of course we like...share...and are subscribed to your channel !!!!
Ah yeah... the Corporal's Cold Handle Camp Skillet :)
Very nice
Zippered hoodies are awesome a-f!
Super cool!
Your having too much fun! 😂
Carry on brother! 💥💪🇺🇸
Awesome mid week. Zip hoodies are always great. I also want a hand forged skillet for some reason.. maybe cuz I like eggs & bacon. Anyway
Great work.
That's practical AF!
Outstanding skillet forging. 👍
Those are some cool skills you are teaching 👍
Real nifty !!!
Leaps and bounds on the ideas, skills, equip.
A thought. If you buy a plasma cutter, you cam make and sell your own cold handle skillets. And save yourself the hassle of searching for one's to sell. It would be the perfect companion to "Corporals Canteen" .
Every video you make amazes me. You see something in your mind and then make it come to life. Always a pleasure to watch your videos. See you Sunday.
Definitely very useful forging ideas, Always great content from Corporal Kelly!
That's awesome job. You are truly talented sir. I don't see why people want to skip you videos. They are missing out.
I like the design. Have you thought about building a forge form press? Then you'd just have the handle to weld on.
Neat skillet. You are a real hard worker. Save some time for a little fun. God bless Nora
Thanks for the video corporal I like the skillet awesome 👌
Entertaining and interesting 👍.....looking forward to Sunday 👍
I have something similar but its a Rambo knife blade where the handle will accept any broomstick or shovel handle. So it's an instant spear. I just stuck it in my bugout bag, but I love it. Plus it was only like 25 bucks.
If you used a thin wall pipe for the handle it would be some good weight savings
You might consider trying the metal electric conduit for the handle. About the same thickness as the pan part and way cheaper than black pipe.
Another awesome metal working video can't wait to see you use it this Sunday
