I put one from Wholesale Automatics in my Next Gen V6 Everest Sport and am seeing pretty much exactly the same results as yours. Around Perth it will range from 85-90. Towing it generally slowly climbs to 88-90. I was towing down south WA in Feb in plus 40 deg and never went over 92, now I am up north and even in very strong headwinds it sits on 90. Like you, my coolant temp has gone up 1-2 degrees. Great investment.
Hi Paul. Unit is $695 and we fitted ourselves. You can check out the install in one on my last vids. Suspect most people will get a mechanic to pop it in for them
I put one on my ford and think their a must have. You can add a small fan and use that to push air through the cooler & radiator, and instead of plugging the old trans cooler in the radiator, run the bypass line through it so thats getting cooled too - makes a difference. Fords tend to run quite warm. If your doing heaps of slower towing you can always drop the exhaust manifold and heat wrap it then reinstall it along with the heat shield, and in your case, install the raptors bonnet vents to your ranger, that would make a huge difference
Did you put a thermal bypass in? The thermal valve in the gearbox won't open until I think 80°, so even with the cooler nothing will cool until the box hits 80°. Also, dont forget ambient temps effect air coolers. If it's 40° outside temps are going to be higher than a 22°day. But a thetmal bypass will make huge temp changes especially in traffic with the box fluid constantly flowing instead of being restricted till 80°. They're still so much better than the heat exchanger. Most water thermostats are 88° so really, the oils being heated to 88° and won't go below that with an exhanger at engine operating temp. I think that's great for Europe in the winter. No good in Australia I have the Nomad valve body, thermal bypass, aluminium deep pan, and cooler from wholesale. Wholesale are an amazing company. Get that Bypass!!! Have constant oil flow through those coolers.
@@imcmcguiness5110 g’day. Yes Wholesale are great. Rod is very knowledgeable on all things transmissions. No haven’t done the thermal bypass. At the moment Wholesale don’t do this for the 10R80. Not sure if it’s something in development or not. I know these can be beneficial in colder climates and those towing but unsure if there’s a reason they haven’t developed for the new Ranger.
@Perth4WDandCamping I watched an American video for a 10r80 today. Bloke talked about the thermal valve..it looks exactly the same as the 6r80. I wonder if the 6r80 bypass will work on the 10r80. Also watched the tail gate storage video install. Now i want one. I have no storage with a second lithium battery behind the back seat. All those tyre change tools have nowhere to go .
Nice one. Yeah possibly could work. I’m sure Rod and the team will be onto a solution if it’s possible. Yeah the tailgate storage unit is a great solution for people with a tub. Great for keeping gear for easy access and lockable too
Certainly not suggesting an upgraded cooler isn’t needed in some vehicles and in some applications. I’m also not suggesting lowering the temp slightly would be a bad thing … But I think understanding the torque converter lock up logic is a huge help coz once you understand what’s going on whilst driving, you can actually train yourself to keep the vehicle in TC lockup most of the time which is a massively effective way to reduce temp
Yes for sure. All comes down to application. Locking out the overdrive gears really helps. Usually I tow in gears 1-7 only and this helps to keep the trans in a better range. Cooler has however made a noticeable improvement with temps whilst towing
The TCM unlocks the convertor under heavy load and hills, keeping it locked under load would result in damaging the lockup clutch in the convertor. Unfortunately this myth that locking it helps has been spread throughout forums and FB. Factory settings prevent it locking under heavy load.
@@1BENT8 I was referring more to the highway, long distance touring type application where with a lot cars you can tell when a TC is in lockup just by observing the info on the dash… And not saying the electronic logic is wrong or the engineers are silly, just the fact that TC slip does generate heat. Add more payload and towing load the vehicle, plus a hot summers day and some long very gradual ascents and it’s not long before the vehicle either needs a bigger cooler or a driver with more mechanical empathy. I would tend to lean more on the understanding and empathy vs bolting on more “bits”
One more thing I wanted to ask. Do you have a Bluetooth OBD 2? OBD 2 Australia, I think are local to you in WA. They have a great bluetooth OBD 2, then you download a app, I use car scanner off android. So the reason for me asking was I saw your monitor on the dash for trans temps. This little thing does it through your phone. You can clear and check faults. There is a dashboard for live telemetry. 0-100 tests.. so much better than a display on the dash. No wires. I also have thier usb to OBD 2 for forscan into my laptop to tune and look at codes. Saves me a lot of money instead of mechanics using thier computer. You wont regret it. Sus it out!
@@imcmcguiness5110 hi mate. Yes I use the Scanguage 2. I like having the displays in front of me on the dash so I can keep an eye on trans and engine temps. Can also scan for codes and reset if any happen which is handy.
@Perth4WDandCamping Nice I just had a look at the scan gauge. What about Tuning? I put a 68mm Garrett intercooler and a Garrett Powermax turbo on the p5at. Needed to be tuned. Berrima Diesel do remote tuning. No dyno needed. The Alientech tuner plugs in to OBD, connect it to wifi at home, it sends the file off to Berrima, they review, create a tune, it uploads to the Alientech. And drive. So simple. This is what sent to Wholesale. To much power on the 6rw80
@Perth4WDandCamping Have a look at the Alien tech tuner. Could be something you could review. Ranger MS-RT.. Go check that baby out. Its in Europe, maybe coming here. Its more of a street version. My px2 is done for off roading. Maxed out. Next MS-RT for me if it comes here. Have you heard of McArmor? They're in WA too. Bought my bullbar off them. It seems all the good gear comes out of WA
Nice. Looking to keep mine pretty stock for now. We’re on a lap of Aus - currently in South Australia so looking to keep things reliable but good to have the option 👍
Only noticed 1 degree difference with the van on the back. Yes important to keep the fins clean - something like Simple Green air-con cleaner works well
how much damage or how does that 5-8' in higher temps really make with the gearbox? I would of thought that a trans cooler would lower the temps considerably more than a few degrees. does lowering the temps from a max of 100 to 93' really save the box from failure ? I have heard that they can and are expected to run at those temps?
Hi mate. Interesting I’ve found it’s been running a lot cooler over the past month or so - I guess to be expected with the weather starting to cool as we head into winter. I think it comes down to vehicle use whether a cooler is right for someone. It’s the high heat under load for prolonged periods which is tough on the box. Coolers really show there value when towing. I don’t think there’s any guarantee of saving a box from failure. I’ve just weighed up the pros and cons for our situation and determined a cooler was the way to go.
And Air cooled cooler is not an efficient way of cooling a fluid. At least not when compared to other types. You need a much higher temp differential between the air and the fluid plus a massive amount (volume) of air to have any impact. The amount of joules that Fluid can absorb make them the ultimate in all cooling - hence why engine coolant is used to cool various systems coz even warm / hot water can be more effective than air
I went in a different direction by installing the deep alloy trans pan, no cooler. I have to say I'm a bit shocked at how little the cooler cools compared to the deep alloy pan. Trans temps take ages to warm up and it cools down pretty well when there's airflow over it. Can't say I feel the need to buy the cooler... yet. I'll see how things go for a year before I decide if I need anything further. For comparison, I drive a gen 1 Raptor, same trans. I don't tow either. Normal city traffic, I rarely see temps over 89 and if it does, drops quickly once moving, down as low as 85 on the fwy. I wonder how much better your cooling would be if you added the pan! btw, I had the pan fitted by Ford so they couldn't give me grief over warrantee! The service tech actually showed me a photo of a next gen ranger with the corner smashed out of the trans pan (very little protection under there), he was going to recommend the alloy pan to that owner!
Nice mate. Yeah I did talk about the alloy pan with Wholesale Automatic Transmissions so we might throw one on at some stage. I have bashplates under the trans so protection is ok but the allow pans certainly have greater cooling properties and allow you to run more oil which is good
Have the same vehicle and done 50,000 kms towing 3.3kg van. Installed trans cooler from new and saw similar results to you. However, have always had issues with coolant temperatures on hills and are considering a bigger radiator. Have to continually drop a couple gears, keep the revs up and slow 10-20 kms to keep coolant temperatures down. Never a problem when not towing. Other than coolant temps , love the vehicle... Have you seen any issues with coolant temperatures?
Rather than plug the trans cooling section on the radiator when installing your trans cooler - flush it and run the radiator bypass line through it to give yourself extra cooling.
@@jamesaustralian9829 They run a heat exchanger on the side of the g/box, not in the radiator. It is best not to use the exchanger as they are know to fail and introduce coolant into the transmission fluid.
Can you add a fan to the cooler activated by a thermostat to assist in cooling? In addition, will it need a cooler bypass/diversion valve for the cooler months to ensure the fluid does get to temp?
Hi Brett. I’m not aware of a additional fan or requirement for cooler bypass in cooler months. Wholesale automatic transmission are great with technical questions so I’d suggest reaching out to them if you’d like more info to determine suitability for your vehicle use. I’m also keeping a note of common questions coming through and will pass onto the wholesale team.
Certainly don’t want to give you the wrong advice here, so I’d suggest chatting to your local dealership if this is a concern. They will be pretty familiar owners who tow adding this mod to prolong the life of their transmission. Interestingly, my previous tow vehicle (2018 Pajero Sport) came with a cooler from factory.
