North central ohio here, folks in my neck of the woods cover them with straw right before spring, does the same thing I think. 🙂

I'm speculating, but I think the airflow provided by the holes is what made the difference. Great experiment with edible rewards.
I’m gonna give this a try - I’m out east so the rhubarb hasn’t quite started here yet
