Mistake #1(0:32) : Quitting your day job too quickly. (He was lacking systems and habits for client acquisition.)
Mistake #2 (1:57): Pricing based on time and not deliverables. (He felt dishonest and hated tracking time.)
Mistake #3 (3:25): Not filtering clients. (Ensure you can exceed client expectations.)
Mistake #4 (4:44): Being too busy for marketing. (Not having multiple avenues for client acquisition is a big risk.)
Mistake #5 (5:56): Not prioritizing significance/meaning. (Giving employees and yourself work that has a purpose. Reframing your perception of the value you provide to be a positive.)
Mistake #6 (7:31): Being the lynchpin. (Your company relies too much on you for key functions. Eliminate > Automate > Delegate - Tim Ferris paraphrase)
Mistake #7 (9:17): Limiting avenues for new business. (Diversify your revenue/clients: change up offerings, strategic partnerships, referrals, content collaboration, inbound and outbound marketing.)

I disagree that you shouldn't take on a client if you're not sure you can meet their expecation. Don't doubt yourself! I do agree that you MUST set an expectation up front. But I think this takes some time and experience to set great expectations. Another banger Chris.

    • @thefutur
      @thefutur 3 роки тому +1

Mark, if you don't know the clients expectations, you can't manage it. if you can't meet it, you are dooming yourself to failure and good dose of stress. that also doesn't mean you should sell yourself short. we've taken on projects we didn't know how to do at the start, but knew that we could figure it out.

@@thefutur wow, thanks for leaving such a thoughtful response. I totally agree with you here. I think what I mean is, each new client has unique challenges that I don't fully understand. But as you said, I know me and my team will figure it out.
It's just hard to know what to expect at the start. Some clients see massive results immediately, others it takes longer.
I do 100% think it's very very very important to set realistic expectations upfront.
If you don't set expectations, you will over promise and under-develiver.
Thanks again for the video and thoughtful response. 🙂🙏

Lost my job in June due to covid so didn't have the luxury of easing myself into starting my own business/studio. I'm 7 months down the line now and I couldn't be happier, I could be earning more but I'm doing alright in what is becoming the worst economic climate in our lifetimes so I not being too hard on myself either.
My advice would be to just do it or you probably never will.

I totally agree and resonate with the valued based pricing. I’ve experimented with it as well, and while I still need to learn the art of valued based pricing and how to properly implement it, I find that a lot of the times its made a much smoother transaction with closing a deal when speaking about pricing deliverables.

spectacular. all the above but especially valuable is the idea of developing new business when you are busiest with clients. a) more referrals; b) prospects sense that you are in demand, which builds their confidence and valuations for what you offer; c) when the well runs dry, you can not only seem desperate but also lose the ability to filter clients and garner market value or premiums for your work.

Thank you for such a useful video! I watched it 3 times making notes. Dear The Futur there is something I would like to draw your attention to. It's sound quality. For me, as a non-native English speaker, it was sometimes difficult to understand what Tim was saying, especially when I was listening in the car, I had to pause, go back and read the subtitles. Although Chris's voice sounds as always very clear and clear. Maybe I'm the only one who's had a hard times understanding what's being said but I wish for a better microphone for Tim. Anyway guys thank you so much for the content it's really the best!
