  • Ambassador Chas W. Freeman, Jr. is a senior fellow at Brown University's Watson Institute for International and Public Affairs, a former U.S. Assistant Secretary of Defense, ambassador to Saudi Arabia (during operations Desert Shield and Desert Storm), acting Assistant Secretary of State for African Affairs, and Chargé d'affaires at both Bangkok and Beijing. He began his diplomatic career in India but specialized in Chinese affairs. (He was the principal American interpreter during President Nixon's visit to Beijing in 1972.)
Ambassador Freeman is a much sought-after public speaker (see chasfreeman.net) and the author of several well-received books on statecraft and diplomacy. His most recent book, "America's Continuing Misadventures in the Middle East" was published in May 2016. "Interesting Times: China, America, and the Shifting Balance of Prestige," appeared in March 2013. "America’s Misadventures in the Middle East" came out in 2010, as did the most recent revision of "The Diplomat’s Dictionary," the companion volume to "Arts of Power: Statecraft and Diplomacy." He was the editor of the Encyclopedia Britannica entry on "diplomacy."
Freeman is a former U.S. assistant secretary of defense, ambassador to Saudi Arabia, principal deputy assistant secretary of state for African affairs, chargé d’affaires a.i. at Bangkok and Beijing, acting U.S. commissioner for refugee affairs and director of program coordination and development at the U.S. Information Agency. He was the principal American interpreter during the late President Nixon’s 1972 opening of U.S. relations with China.
Chas Freeman studied at the Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México and Taiwan and earned an A.B. magna cum laude from Yale University as well as a J.D. from the Harvard Law School. He chairs Projects International, Inc., a Washington-based firm that for more than three decades has helped its American and foreign clients create ventures across borders, facilitating their establishment of new businesses through the design, negotiation, capitalization, and implementation of greenfield investments, mergers and acquisitions, joint ventures, franchises, one-off transactions, sales and agencies in other countries.

William Deere, a UNRWA official based in Washington, DC, said Israel’s war on Gaza “has absolutely no bottom to it” after the killing of six of the agency’s staff in the attack on al-Jaouni school.
“Six colleagues lost today, that brings the death toll among UNRWA staff in this conflict to 220, which is the highest ever in United Nations history,” Deere told Al Jazeera.
“Our staff are on the front lines, and they’re not going to back down, they’re not going to stop doing their job,” he added.

I'm a bit confused. Taiwan is a part of China, & recognized by America as being so. So then, why should America have aircraft carriers in the Pacific? What right does America have to meddle in the relations between Taiwan & the rest of China? It doesn't make any sense to me.

Nuland prevaricated, as usual. The Istanbul Communiqué included the US and UK as co-guarantors of a permanently neutral, de-militarized and probably more 'federal' Ukraine. The US would not accept that. Thus, neither did the UK. It follows that proceeding with further, more detailed negotiations between Ukraine and the RF would be futule. So, the Bucha and Irpin malarkey was concocted and the negotiations were declared over.

Could it be that Iran is holding because Russia has asked it to and perhaps pointed out waiting is the best strategy. To sweeten the wait which is surely a bitter pill for the Iranians, Russia is strengthening Iran's position in myriad ways. It will be interesting to see what happens after BRICS assuming things stay relatively calm until then.

At 49:38: (The deal that was negotiated in March-April in Istanbul in 2022 did not fall apart, as Victoria ("Fuck the EU") Nuland has claimed.) Actually it was pulled apart by Boris Johnson acting for the US and the UK. And that was reported at the time (Naftali Bennett). Of course from the Russian point of view the whole point was to ensure that there was no military threat from Ukraine. That was the purpose of neutralizing Ukraine, not having it as a member of NATO. So when she says neutered Ukraine the assumption that she is preceding from is that it was somehow good for Ukraine to pose the sort of military threat to Russia that it now does (as NATO has built up an army in Ukraine since the illegal US backed coup took place in 2014). One of the great ironies of the moment is that the invasion of Kursk, the firing of missiles and drones deep into Russia including killing somebody in a suburb of Moscow, this illustrates that if Ukraine is part of NATO, which it is for all practical purposes other than Article 5 commitments at the moment, that this is indeed a real threat to Russia. And just as the US would not tolerate Mexico allying with China against us, the Russians understandably will not tolerate Ukraine being part of an anti-Russian alliance, especially an alliance which has ceased (ended) to be defensive but is now on the offense (attacking), it has been on the offense (attacking) in various places, Afghanistan which is not part of Europe the last time I looked, Libya (in Africa), and before that of course Serbia and Kosovo. So the Russian view is pretty clear, and they are all willing to negotiate. If the Ukrainians found it (the war) unbearable they could have made that decision (to end it) on their own. ~ Chas Freeman
