Dewar's 27 Double Double - an award winner & affordable

Dewar's is bottling some old whiskies and making them affordable by offering us half size bottles. A lot of us could not afford a full bottle but want a taste of these whiskies hence an affordable 375 ml bottle of ultra aged whisky. The three blended scotch in this series are called the' Double Double'. This range is a 21 year old, a 27 year old and a 32 year old all finished in different types of Sherry butts. The 'double double' aging and finishing can be confusing so let's explain it. First, malt and grain whiskies are aged separately in their own oak casks. The malt whiskies are then blended and re-casked. It is the same for the grain whiskies which are blended, and re-casked. Both casks have been kept separate up to now. After this step, the blended malt and blended grain whiskies are married and matured a third time. Finally, these married whiskies are one and finished in a sherry cask. Each type of finishing sherry butt is unique to the age statement of the whisky. I have priced out these whiskies in the reviews. So far I have reviewed the 21 and now I'll do the 27. I will let you know that the 21 was a fantastic price for a quality whisky widely reviewed and scored in the mid to upper eighties. It has won numerous awards including blended Scotch of the year. The price alone has made it attractive. Lets take a peak at the 27 year old and see how it fairs in the review. Sláinte

So I opened one of those bottles this is one of the best whiskeys I’ve ever tasted. It does so much for me. I only wish I had bought six bottles instead of two.

The Dewars Double Double series has become a quality and affordable blended whisky. I would like to compare the Johnnie Walker XTR 21 & the JW Blue Label to the Dewars Double Double but 46% ABV non chill filtered to the JW at 40% ABV and chill filtered might not work.

Dewar’s 21 dd didn’t live up to my expectations even for the price.
Dewar’s 32 dd however is enjoyable but at a hefty price $140 375 ml
I passed on the D27 so no reference there….albeit to say IMO they won’t compare favorably to any 40% chilled and colored offerings

Thanks for the review noel I have been thinking about getting one or two of these expressions for a while but held off too long and the prices went up but then a week and a half ago I went online and saw them (dewars 27)for $67 Canadian so I bought two thinking that it was a mistake and they may not honour the price but they did. and I do think it was a mistake because three days later the price was 137. I’m looking forward to opening one of those.

just one suggestion, try keeping the whisky your mouth a little longer, you'll get way more of a development

Thanks for the feedback. I agree with you in what you say. I am actually a very slow drinker and like to chew my whisky (when I am not doing a review). I can spend a whole evening with a dram and have half of it still in the glass when I go to bed. Slàinte Mhath
