12:13 This Explorers Theme is actually one of my, of not, my favorite Tomb Raider theme in the series, it might not be similar to the original but that orchestrated feel to it... Short and sweet but really captures that Raider aspect so well. Its almost like a cue of you finishing a puzzle and ready to move on to the next 😉
I, for one, absolutely love the ADRENALINE DODGE, HEAD SHOT manoeuvre. It’s actually my most favourite thing about Anniversary, and why I prefer the action in this game to Legend and Underworld. It’s such an innovative way of engaging your enemies in combat. 🔥
Oh, absolutely with you (and everyone else) on the colours. Honestly, it's my biggest gripe with all of this trilogy: lots of gorgeous moments, but so, so many levels are about 95% grey corridors. I get that it's more realistic, and I suppose they came out in an era where gaming had moved into strongly realistic territory so it was probably necessary, but give me the classic, pulpy/cartoony style where every level has a vibrant, distinct look any day.
Ye I just want to be taken to magical and interesting places when I play games, not enter another dreary and dull world 😂 give me the colourful over the top cartoon vibes any day 😍
I think the long corridors are just there in place of a loading screen. They give the next area time to load in and you can still be in the game instead of sitting through a loading screen after every level. They also talk about in the commentary how they wanted the levels in each location to be connected seamlessly so you could go back through them. Like until a certain point in the story, you can walk all the way back from the Tomb of Qualopec to the Mountain Caves door if you want to, which I actually did end up doing because I was looking for relics. Those things were so hard to find the first playthrough. But also I just wanted to see how far back I could go. The only part that you can't get back to is the outside bit at the start. I thought it was quite impressive though I wish there was more level design where you could see other areas from another level like in the original, I get that just making you walk down a long hallway into the next area makes it feel a lot more linear and boring. But at least they don't take you out of the game to a loading screen every time you complete a level. And it does kinda bother me that Vilcabamba is so small in this. And they removed the room with the bear where you use the relic key to get to the next level. Now it's just a loading hallway. Kind of disappointing. And I actually prefer the platforming challenges over just shimmying across ledges. But legend Lara was not designed for precision platforming.
I have the 'collectors edition' with the bonus DVD that has the soundtrack and behind the scenes, artwork etc. it was only 39.99 € in '07 so easy pick. TR1 was also my first 3D game coming from SNES and amiga 2D games. I was really hyped to play anniversary
Love the game but the swimming is my weakness. Took me a long time to complete the timed door sections in sanctuary of the scion. I got used to the adrenaline dodge though. Love the music and creepy sounds in this level, and especially the shadow effects.
It’s curious as this version of Vilcabamba is somewhat the opposite of the TR1 version. That one had a very good narrative while the visual design was somewhat confusing and here, the “random corridors of nothingness” (RCoN for briefing 😂😂) make the level a bit hollow while the actual town center looks preety good. Talking about the urban section I thing the perfect version of this level would be a mixture of both TR1 and TRA. The incas were known for their elaborate stone architecture while here the houses, despite looking pretty accurate to me, make Vilcabamba look more like a small village rather than an important city. TR1 tried to design the level with this concept but unfortunately the engine back then didn’t allow a good representation of the level of detail it required. In Shadow oTR they actually did quite a near job in that regard. This level however, showed the main weakness of the trilogy: the engine is designed for combat (which is really good) but not so much for exploration or platforming. Contrary to classic Lara, which was extremelly stiff, this one doesn’t jump that accurate and swimming just sucks. In TRU they improved quite a bit, has to be said.
RCoN, love it 😂 I agree, both have good and bad points, and ideally a mix of the two would be perfection! Anniversary absolutely loses the exploration aspect of Tomb Raider which is probably another huge reason why I don’t like it much 🙁
Totally agree with you about the corridors of nothingness. I was just thinking about the empty corridors a few seconds before you said it. Was always one of my problems with the game, too
The Corridors of Nothing are an unfortunate necessary evil to take you from setpiece to setpiece (In this case, from large area to large area) without load screens ecetera. Sure they throw in some parkour so it's not just walking simulator but it still doesn't feel great, I had completely blanked most of them from my memory because they're so forgettable. At least some of the later setpieces are stunning enough to make the dull Corridor of Nothing worth it. The Adrenaline Dodge is a learned skill, but once you master and can pull it off reliably it feels good. I think in my mind I filled in most of the colour in these levels myself, so my memories look a lot less dull cave grey. I wonder if there's a ReShade or something to add some of the more vibrant colour like TR1 had, I might have to look into that for if I ever play it again.
I would’ve loved to see the Core remake they were doing. It’s interesting to have Anniversary, but I think Crystal should’ve just been focused on Legend trilogy. It’s weird that a remake was kind of shoved into it. I’m not sure how much it even has to do with the overall story as this is my first playthrough of the trilogy but it feels out of place so far. They could’ve at least let us have more green plants for a pop of color. 😭But it was very era appropriate to have this type of color pallet and I’m glad we’re done with it (hopefully).
As a Tomb Raider 1 player before I played TR Anniversary. I find the village quite grey and poorly executed. Didn't get the adrenaline dodge. The pro's in Anniversary it is quite faster , like pushing blocks (or cages with mummies inside). And I love the relics and the secrets. The architecture in the room at 9:30 was based on the ruins of Xpuhil, Campeche in Mexico. At least in TR1. It looks quite the same.
"Corridors of nothingness" - Spot on description! Unlike mountain caves, I am mostly not a fan of what they did to one of my most nostalgic Tomb Raider levels. While I do like the new taller look of the city and they did a nice job with the temple entrance room, I am sad that the city is so streamlined and impossible to get lost in. The original had maze-like rooms, optional awesome secret rooms, and an epic swimming experience. All mostly gone. And yeah, grey bland colors are indeed Crystal Dynamics' name in this game. Due to the nook where we used to find the golden idol being there in the remake, I even wonder if the original final room where we place the gold idol was supposed to be there but was cut....for another corridor of nothingness...😅😭 At least for the most part, TRA's Lost Valley is much better than this!
Yes too many corridors of nothingness and too simplified and dulled down 😩 I too loved the maze like feel to the original village. I think the exploration aspect of Tomb Raider is lost in this game 😭💔
Can't wait for the cut scene explaination for the next level... 'Lara heads into the Lost Valley, she sees the T-rex, turns around and runs back the way she came. When the cut scene ends Lara is deeper into the Lost Valley.'
I love that I can watch more episodes back to back on my free Saturday💖💖💖 I understand making the whole ambiance more realistic, but taking away all the depth and colors? Why??
I see the AI gets stuck on yours as well. I haven't tried yet, but doing a search showed someone saying that turning on V-Sync can correct it. I haven't tried it yet though. Someone just gifted me a key and I'm still trying to sort out the controls for a PS2 controller. I'm more of a Classic TR guy. I can appreciate what they did with this and Legend, but to me it does lose the feel of being a game with the, too much realism aspect. It is very dark and does lack the color pallet. Part of what made the TR experience what it is, are the tank controls. Way more precise control and less herky-jerky
I see Tomb Raider has gone Max Payne 😅 that particular franchise started the whole bullet time/slo-mo dodge mechanic. I actually think it looks useful, but I've never played! Really short too, compared to classic TR1 haha, and I do agree, while it looks more like a dank and dreary cavern, that's the problem. Realism over aesthetic, I guess? Anyway, nice short one!
Haha ye I think they really tried to modernise the franchise at the time with that adrenaline dodge mechanic but I’m just not a fan 😂 And ye, I don’t hugely like realism is video games. I want to escape reality and be taken to magical and interesting places. Dank and dreary is not the vibe 😅❤️
@@YouDontKnowMeSoYouDontKnowJack No, the adrenaline dodge, head shot manoeuvre is a combat mechanic implemented by the game’s developers, and is therefore not an optional mechanic.
OK, so first of all I love the adrenaline rush because you may kill the enemies quicker. I don’t wanna be mean but I also want to be honest so I’ll just say that you suck at this. 😂 don’t take it personally. 😂 also I love the color grading in this game and that it’s changing with each location. Here we have this gray Ish green. In Greece we get brown. Egypt is my favorite one yellow and red the Atlantis. People don’t appreciate it. All they need to do is go to the light and see Jesus.😅
Haha I do suck at it and I’m fine with that, no offence taken 😂 I really don’t like it. I’m happy you like the colours, I just want to be taken to vibrant and magical environments when gaming and this just feels a bit too dull for me 💔

Little tip, you can use your small and large medipack by simply pressing down and up on the d pad.

I’m doing great thanks Steve! Hope you’re good and enjoy the new videos 🥰
I really hope this game gets a remaster. Also love the info about this city. I didn’t even know it was real.
This one needs a remaster?
@ Or a rerelease.
I think the completion time is your total playtime for the game and not individual levels. It confused me when I saw it on mine too 🥰

Hey Saz will there be any more Tomb Raider movies coming out..? . Will always love Tomb Raider games ❤😊
More Tomb Raider next week as this week I am focusing on finishing a massive video I’ve been working on 🤭
I love that I can watch more episodes back to back on my free Saturday💖💖💖

Yes it feels so flat and lifeless 😭💔

You need to play shadow of the tomb raider. It’s my favorite games. The scenes and levels have amazing views
I’ve played it before and will be playing it on the channel in the future ☺️
I don't get the point of medipacks in this game. If you die, you respawn pretty much where you were. There's no fear of dying.
Is the adrenaline move something that can be turned off in the game settings?
