You showed up like an angel my friend! Walked into the kitchen to find oatmeal and brown sugar scattered on the counter from the kids this morning and thought, 'There's got to be a better way!' Thank you so much!!!! I love this new series!!!!
THANK YOU, THANK YOU!!!! I finally got these made (GF), my son has Celiac and hasn’t had instant oatmeal since diagnosed a few years ago. He tried one this AM & I got the thumbs up! Thank you for helping to bring back a part of normal food for him. I’m still learning this GF life for him & appreciate something I could easily convert for him. Thanks for your time & efforts to teach & inspire food security!
Those glasses with tops are available at the dollar store for $1.25 each. I purchased them there for years. You have a choice of white covers or red covers. Really love this idea and I’ll be making up my oatmeal breakfast for the next week today. Thank you.
As a person with Celiacs in order for it to be certified gluten free it has to be grown on land that has never had wheat, rye or barley grown previously. Otherwise, even though oats are gluten free if there are seeds that grow from previous gluten grains it can be cross contaminated.
Additionally, most commercially processed oats, come from factories that also process other gluten containing grains creating again, risk for cross contamination. I believe I read that Quaker for example has only one certified gluten free facility in the US ( which is one reason their GF oats are higher priced and have limited availability). The GF “fad” diet has only made things more difficult for those of us who have no choice.
Yes, I don’t have celiacs but I have severe intolerance. It breaks out my face with hives and itchy red patches, stomach pain and feeling extremely I’ll for several days 😩.
I like making overnight oats (not shelf stable) using steel cut oats, uncooked. I use half pint canning jars. Add diced apple, Craisins, chopped pecans ( or walnuts), cinnamon and sugar. Top it off with milk ... Half and Half is so delicious ... Stir and refrigerate overnight. I make up several of these at a time to have throughout the week. Oh, I don't heat them (but I suppose you could), just eat them out of the jar. So yummy!
Your timing is perfect. I was actually searching for a recipe for oatmeal packets when you video notification came through! I made this up for my husband right away. He prefers only raisins or cranberries. The mix is in a 1/2 gallon jar with a scoop so he can make his serving size as desired and add a few pieces of fruit if he wants.
I love your idea of storing in a large jar, which also sounds convenient! A mason jar could be vaccum-sealed to ensure longer-term freshness. Going to give this a try.
I have been making a similar recipe using zip bags. I add slivered almonds to all my varieties. I make a lot of the combinations you did, but one of my favorites is Almond Joy using almonds, coconut, and chocolate chips.
Well, I feel like a dolt! Why didn't I think of this? I make overnight oats all the time with sugar and spices, nuts, and/or dehydrated fruit. But like you, I sometimes buy the ridiculously expensive prepackaged commercial stuff. What a clever girl you are! This will save me bunches of $$! Thank you. Looking forward to the rest of your vids on this topic.
My celiac 9 year old great grandson needs GF oats If you have been to a mill, you know there is dust everywhere Gluten free us processed in a plant where NO wheat is processed Completely gluten free. If he eats straight oatmeal, he doubles over with pain . We use Bobs Red Mill Gluten Free Old Fashion oats for our granola and we will use it in this wonderful recipe. Thanks for the idea!
Yum, just started doing this. Using zip lock bags, less expensive then buying and taste great. Thanks for doing this. My son does the overnight oatmeal and adds flavored protein powder, this is our breakfast when I come to visit.
I love this idea! I have dehydrated passionfruit, kiwi, mango and I need to get more pineapple. We will add coconut to most of them! And nuts! And bananas. Strawberries too. Oh I can’t wait to go do some of these for the grandbabies! I think my dried coconut milk will be a great addition too.
This is such a money saver over those packaged cups. I got those exact glass containers at dollar tree! Love them. I also grind my rolled oats in blender until coarse.
Great idea! I would add a bit more milk - milk proteins make the cereal creamy too. I love the prospect of NOT using plastic or styrofoam for these! Note: If you sew at all, there are several YT vids for making an easy-to-make small quilted bowl/cup cosy for hot bowls. I like “Crafty Gemini”, and “Crafty Grrl”.
The bowl cozies are wonderful and very easy to sew. I made a variety of sizes for myself as well as gifts for others. They also are nice to use when placing hot bowls or plates on the table or counter, and even eating a bowl of ice cream because you can hold the bowl without freezing your hands ☺️
Great video. I add powdered almonds. I measure my oats by weight & have at least 50g per day to help lower cholesterol. You mentioned dried apricots. I usually add these as well for the taste & the potassium content. Supposed to help lower high blood pressure. I tend to soak my oats overnight & eat them at room temperature for breakfast with a little bit of maple syrup or honey. This video will inspire me to try a wider variety of dried fruits. Thankyou!
I use the same ingredients to make overnight oats. I just add milk to the jar before I go to bed and stick it in the refrigerator. The next morning, breakfast is ready. I can eat it cold or heat it in the microwave. I usually eat it cold. It is so good!
Another suggestion is to use frozen fruit, just p😮it in after microwaving the oatmeal. The coolness cools down the oatmeal so it can be eaten comfortably
I make something very similar. I got the recipe from an old "Company's Coming" cookbook years ago. I like it more plain so I leave out the brown sugar and cinnamon, then I can add whatever toppings I want. I think I add a bit more powdered milk as well. I also grind the chia seeds with the oatmeal and a bit of oat bran together. I usually make a huge batch and split it with my brother. So yummy!! Dried apricots with a tiny bit of almond flavoring is just awesome.
I love this preparedness activity. What a time and money saver! NOTE: IF someone chooses to use Styrofoam please DO NOT use Styrofoam in the microwave. I have been told fumes are put off in microwave heating. Styrofoam is not marked microwave safe.
I would not even put those plastic lids in the microwave. When plastics say microwave safe, they are referring mostly to the bowl, LOL, not our human bodies. There are too many plastics leaching chemicals into our foods.
Great idea for healthy instant breakfasts. I like my porridge quite creamy so I think I would lightly blitz the 4 cups of oats (+ grind the single cup). I think this would also help to cook it more quickly. Loved your enthusiasm 🥰
Last year I found a recipe for a hot cereal mix that adds cream of wheat, chia, and quinoa to oatmeal, which I ate throughout the winter with pecans and my dehydrated cherries. The quinoa gave it a surprisingly fresh taste that I loved, so I'll be doing that again this winter. I like the idea of added instant milk powder to it.
I just found this and tried to make oatmeal like this, using 5-minute stuff, and it turned out great! Easy and quick. I used honey for sweetener, just oatmeal, one half cup, cinnamon, and a half cup of boiling water, waited five minutes and I had perfect oatmeal. Tomorrow I'm shopping for powdered milk, agave nectar, raisins, some dried fruit, and powdered milk. Subscribed for whatever else you might have. Looks good!
OH MY❗️ Your enthusiasm is infectious! Helping people save and having fun doing it! I love it! If you use chia seeds they soak up 10 times their weight, you can make jams/jelly out of chia and fresh, mashed blueberries or strawberries, it is also yummy! I love maple/brown sugar, hmmmm, cranberry apple? Now you've done it, lol... This was a fun one! Thank you both, NHNancy 🍏🍐🍋🍊🍉🍇🫐🍒🍍🥥......
Thank you SO MUCH for this. I fix meals for my elderly parents and I started taking them these oatmeal cups with dehydrated or freeze dried fruit and they love them! They are so easy for them to pop in the microwave and have a nutritious breakfast.
This simple breakfast recipe is one of my all- time favorites. I just made another batch. I have added chopped almonds or walnuts, as well as pumpkin seeds or sunflower seeds to what ever fruit I have used.
Wal-Mart has 1 oz packets of various freeze dried fruit for $3.28. They also had blue berries that were dried, but they were soft like raisins. These were the same price but you get 3oz. The reason we care what process they use is shelf life. For my purposes i think any of the dried items will be fine. In addition to oatmeal cup ingredients, i got a spray bottle for steramine and two dark finished, large sized heavy duty bread pans. 😊
Oatmeal is very often cross contaminated with gluten depending on the facility where it is processed which can make Celiac sufferers ill. It is labeled gluten free because it is processed in a gluten free facility.
Thank you for sharing this! This absolutely is an amazing idea! I will definitely have to give this a try! Raspberries, Blackberries, Triple Berries, etc. They all sound so delicious!
You've done it again! I'm super stoked about this one!!! My oldest son LOVES oatmeal. His birthday is Halloween but we are celebrating it this next Saturday (Oct. 21, 2023). He & his family will be here for his supper he got to pick out and I'm going to give him this oatmeal concoction to take back home with him (he may have to share with his kids so I will give him plenty. Oh Pam & Jim........I wish I could express how much of a blessing/enlightenment you have been in my life. You get me sooooo EXCITED about doing stuff!!!!!! I also love when you take us on rides with you guys. You are going far beyond your scope of duties regarding facebook and I so love you guys for it. I see things I otherwise wouldn't get to see. I'm 72 and don't like to travel anymore ever since the bed bugs and come back and now I have to haul so many medical things with me that it's just not worth it to me. Not complaining, I'm completely happy doing what I do get to do......which is so much more than a lot of people even younger than me get to do. Okay, enuf. I could go on & on about you two but this is already probably more than you like to get into. Thank you again & don't EVER think we don't appreciate EVERYTHING you do for us. Love You!!!!!
Question: will the raisins and the crasians store with the oats for a long period of time? I ask because, don’t they have a fair amount of moisture Contant?
What grains are in your six grain cereal? Couldn’t we put those grains through a flaker and make our own? This sounds so wonderful but I’ve not seen six grain cereal anywhere. I really interested it finding that too. Thank you for your research.
I have a canister with 1 minute oatmeal and raisins. I put 1/2 cup in a bowl. Add sugar, salt, cinnamon, butter, and 1/4 cup water and cook in the microwave 1 1/2 min. I do not like milk but you could put milk after and leave out butter. You could add dry milk, salt, sugar, and cinnamon to the oatmeal and raisin canister and just add the water as you use it.
Oh I love this!! When our children were school aged.. I kept a few glass cookie jars of various flavored oatmeals on the "low counter" for them to serve themselves breakfast. We also have a hot/cold electric water dispenser that holds the 5 gallon jugs...still have it. What a nice Labor Day tradition to mix up various flavored oatmeals for the start of the new school year. I would also use maple extract for maple and brown sugar oatmeal. Fond memories.. thank you!
I have been having an oatmeal cup for the past week or so, not everyday, but enough to notice a decent drop in my morning blood glucose reading. I have used many recipes and canning hints from your channel. Thanks for all you do. (I was eating the prepared oatmeal packets and they didn't have the same effect)
I love this idea! I would think that previously used jelly jars, or other commercially bought jars of similar size would work great too. Thanks for all you do!
Oh I love this! Oatmeal has been a favorite food of mine for many years (grits are a favorite as well), and I will confess that I do buy the Quaker box of packets that you can get at the grocery store. It will be so much fun to create my own oatmeal packets. Thank you so much!
I finally made mine! It tastes just like the packets. I only had ground chianti seeds on hand. I ate my test one plain. I have freeze dried peaches, apples, bananas, strawberries, and I bought myself some crasians. Thank you!
I couldn't imagine learning from this, seemed so simple, I only watched because YOU are so careful and smart, I was curious. Mind blown...this is amazingly delicious. I never thought to pulverize the oats, and adding some whole oats, so yum!!!
This is my favorite new recipe of 2023. I know it's just oatmeal but I have modified it for my taste. It's an easy prep, I add dried fruit & nuts in the morning, add the boiling water. After eating the pint jar goes into the dishwasher. I don't care for the texture of cold overnight oats. I used to cook my oats in the microwave but I had to use an 8 cup glass measuring cup to allow enough space so the oats would not overflow while cooking. After cooking I had to wash that large measuring cup. This is simple, better than cooked oats & healthier than store bought instant oat packages.
This is so clever!! Thank you❤️ those cups prices are ridiculous. Such a way to save money on these. I would add the dehydrated fruit of course but some will have chocolate. I cannot wait to make these!
I’m watching this video again to get the recipe written down, and I’m chuckling over your saying that oats are of course gluten free and it’s stylish these days to label things as “gluten free”. My job in the pizza shop has paper plates for customers that are labeled “recyclable”, and that always makes me laugh! I thought you’d get a smile out of that as well. Thank you for this video, Pam - I love oatmeal and am excited to try this new method!
Yes...made me laugh. Several people have corrected me, however, noting that if rolled oats are manufactured at a plant that also uses wheat in the same machines, then the label cannot say gluten free! Who knew!
Well, well, well. I want to THANK YOU for this video. I made this with my flaked oatmeal. I actually bought the jars and was curious about the pineapple/coconut combination-DELIGHTFUL. Thanks so much
Pam What a excellent experiment! Brilliant. I will be adding almonds. pumpkin seeds and sunflower seeds to mine with a touch of honey. Thank you so much for all you do!
Several months ago, I cooked a few big pots of the old-fashioned oatmeal, then added a little salt, butter, brown sugar, and heavy cream or half and half. I divided it into several bowls and made apple cinnamon in one, peaches and cream in one, blueberry in one, and strawberry in one. I freeze dried each batch, then broke them into big chunks and put them in mason jars or mylar bags. I sealed them, and they will be breakfasts for years to come. These will also be great for camping. If I were eating them within a few months, I would add pecans and/or raisins. I was going more for long term storage. Thanks for the idea (credit to Bob's Red Mill, too) to add chia seeds! I must try the pineapple and coconut next time!
Great idea! Two questions. (1) I love grits! Could you use this same idea with grits and would you use instant grits? (2) Why are fruits that you buy in a health food grocery store able to remain soft and would they be safe to use in this procedure? 🤔
I make old fashion oatmeal twice a week for me and my husband. I make it on the stovetop. We love it with almond milk, pure vanilla extract, cinnamon (no sugar) then I set a plate of fresh cut up fruit and nuts on the side for toppings. It’s such a hearty breakfast. Love this individual idea. Also the stainless steel appliance cleaners is an awesome idea. Great video. Thanks
I just had old-fashioned oatmeal with blueberries and walnuts. It was delicious. I can't wait to make up mixes. These will be grat when camping. Thank you so much for this video.
I love adding some raw tehina to oatmeal, makes it velvety. But you'd have to mix it in around the time you add water . The raw tehina has a pretty good shelf life even unsealed but I can't attest to how long it'll keep when mixed with oats and sugar. The powdered milk is a fantastic idea.
Last September we made these up! Mini marshmallow and chocolate chip was a fav. Almonds or walnuts and apples. Bananas and chocolate chips was good. Coconut and peaches went over well. We added powdered creamer to some and that was good. I prefer to make up the recipe per baggie instead of the bowl version. I found the milk/creamer and salt was not evenly dispersed. I am about to do up another set of baggies.
I would like to know if the powered milk you use in this recipe is instant or non instant? Thank you so much for all your great videos!! I'm an oldie goldie, but I'm learning new things thanks to you! Bravo!!
These will be perfect for my grandmother. She's about to turn 106 and still living on her own. It will feel like she is still cooking for herself but make it so much easier and safer for her to do so. I think I'll just make hers in a batch in quart jars so she can make as little or as much as she likes.
I've added dates, nuts, and figs to the list. Can you do more DIY recipes to help us cut down on prepacked and processed goods? 🙏🏽
I would like more DIY recipes also.
I bet such recipes are on their way!
me too please
Me also. And raisins.
Oh, figs would be good!
I use sugar free vanilla powdered coffee creamer as a sweetener with a few canned peaches, it makes a nice peaches and cream oatmeal!
Thank you! My husband is diabetic and I wasn't sure how to incorporate a sweetener into a homemade oatmeal (he refuses to do the packaged sweeteners like stevia or splenda) this will work really well! Thank you so much!

Really love this idea and I’ll be making up my oatmeal breakfast for the next week today. Thank you.
Yes, we are making more, too. Jim
I thought I saw them at Dollar Tree…thanks!
My husband likes to add PB powder and mini chocolate chips. He says it’s like eating a warm no bake cookie lol.
Wow I never thought ab that! A healthy chocolate chip oatmeal "cookie" for breakfast sounds like a great idea!😊

Always helpful to make life simpler. We love raisins, walnuts & brown sugar. I can't resist a big pat of butter.Tks😊
I love chia seeds in oatmeal! I don't need sugar in my oatmeal but my husband does.
Fond memories.. thank you!
Macadamia nuts total Hawaiian YUMMMM 💞🌻🦋
Ohhhh! YES! Great suggestion.
I love this video very much
I would make peaches and cream, plus pumpkin spice as things to add. Thank you for all you do and share.
What a great idea! Convenience wins! Having these made up ahead of time would help us to reach for healthier foods.
I would add in pecans or walnuts with cinnamon
I love this idea! I would think that previously used jelly jars, or other commercially bought jars of similar size would work great too. Thanks for all you do!
You are very welcome. Yes, there are many options for packaging. I am just a sucker for pretty glassware!
I love this idea. Great for even kids, for breakfast before school. So many great add ins.
Oh I love this! Oatmeal has been a favorite food of mine for many years (grits are a favorite as well), and I will confess that I do buy the Quaker box of packets that you can get at the grocery store. It will be so much fun to create my own oatmeal packets. Thank you so much!
Going to make some of these with my dehydrated rhubarb and strawberry as toppers.
I finally made mine! It tastes just like the packets. I only had ground chianti seeds on hand. I ate my test one plain. I have freeze dried peaches, apples, bananas, strawberries, and I bought myself some crasians. Thank you!
I like this idea. I’ve only done it as overnight oats making up several days in advance. Yummy. Thank you.
My favorite is dehydrated raspberries and dark chocolate chips ... which I am now making. Haha
This is so clever!! Thank you❤️ those cups prices are ridiculous. Such a way to save money on these. I would add the dehydrated fruit of course but some will have chocolate.
I cannot wait to make these!
You are so welcome! Jim
Who knew!
I love those little jars! Yes, please share the amazon link to them, when you have time. I'd love to get some.
How have I never thought of this. I will be making this today. I even have dehydrated diced apples. Your precision is fantastic ❤
So glad you like the idea. Dried apples work great--I just one like that this morning!
Well, well, well. I want to THANK YOU for this video. I made this with my flaked oatmeal. I actually bought the jars and was curious about the pineapple/coconut combination-DELIGHTFUL. Thanks so much
You have made me so hungry with the pineapple and coconut comb. Thanks Pam & Jim.
Ooh, yummy! I love oatmeal. Thanks for the ideas.
Great idea! Two questions.
(1) I love grits! Could you use this same idea with grits and would you use instant grits?
(2) Why are fruits that you buy in a health food grocery store able to remain soft and would they be safe to use in this procedure? 🤔
Instant grits are terrible
I’ve never done fruit in my grits
Cheese, yes!
Thanks
Thanks for watching and for your comments!
Why not actual milk-cows or goats milk?
Missing out on lots of imp nutrients. Fat, protein, calcium & other bone building minerals.
You can easily find inexpensive silicone lids online for jam and yogurt jars that you might already have.
I just had old-fashioned oatmeal with blueberries and walnuts. It was delicious. I can't wait to make up mixes. These will be grat when camping. Thank you so much for this video.
Thank you.
Welcome! Jim
Dehydrated fruits would work but how much liquid do you think we need to put in. Brilliant idea
love this idea
This was fun. I already packaged oatmeal ready for hot water. Now I will add the flavors at the time I cook them. you have great ideas .
Sounds great! Jim
Guess I will have to start eating oatmeal again!! Such good ideas not only on the video but in the comments!!!! Thanks so much.
You are so welcome! Jim
This is right up my ally. These cups are a go-to in my pantry, but so expensive. Can't wait to do this
Love this thank you so very much Pam and Jim!!!
❤ LOVE❤ I can't wait to make this! Wonderful warm breakfast for winter that is right around the corner!
Thanks for sharing!
Sounds great! Jim
I would like to know if the powered milk you use in this recipe is instant or non instant? Thank you so much for all your great videos!! I'm an oldie goldie, but I'm learning new things thanks to you! Bravo!!
Thank you for sharing.
Those would be great for travel & camping
Great ideas! I might try some with dehydrated maple syrup for sweetener.
I love the idea, I always have dried fruit, nuts etc on hand. Will definitely incorporate these in my menu planning.
