Hello, I'm currently making a video about the Sunshine Skyway (Old) Bridge Collapse and came across this priceless footage. Would you mind if I use a few seconds of it in my video? Your channel would of course be credited both on screen and in description. Thanks! -Sam
It wasn't that bad going across it, it was actually beautiful. However when me and my family were on it you could see the broken span which was pretty scary, luckily I took pictures of it when I was in the backseat.
It was very steep. I don't live in the Tampa Bay area anymore, but I still have dreams about driving over that old bridge. It was almost straight up and straight down. Like a roller coaster.
@@lindsaymarie1565 I read your comment, and it amazed me how similiar my thoughts were on this.My first trip across this bridge,I was 12, .... it was a week after the frieghter hit the South bridge. The dropoff into the void was terrifying as we went by, - I too got some pictures when we past that I still have - as far as the grade, it was scary to approach but once you were on it - wasnt that bad.
I tell ya....I've been trying to research for years of why I hate steel girder bridges....and you pretty much summed it up..."looks like monster eating you". Other large structured bridges, like suspension bridges, don't bother me, but I hate all that steel over the top of me.

sometimes your tires would slip on the metal grid when you where on top.really scary. what would have happened if you slipped and went backwards. and of course you could feel it swaying in the wind. i could continue. there are many stories about that old bridge. and even a few about the new one. check the stories about the south end toll takers and the BLONDE! OOOOOOOO!!!
Greg Blanchard me too i live in connecticut and my late granparents were in tampa in a hotel that morning i still have the newspapers he gave me and book too
I drove over this bridge to go to Miami once over it I had to stop and get my self together when I came back from Miami I took the long way never again
Hey Kurt....I don't mean to laugh but I think it's the way you worded your statement......you had to stop and get yourself together.😂😂😂...I can only imagine. With that being said, I "FULLY & TOTALLY" understand where you're coming from and what you mean. My mom and I were traveling from New York to California with my dad in a tractor trailer when he stopped at a weigh station. They detained us for several hours (no cell phones back in the 70's) only to tell my father that he didn't have the proper stickers/permits (thanks to his inept boss) to cross the Golden Gate Bridge and would have to take an alternate route. well he did just that and when we commenced to cross this "bridge" with guard rails that were almost non existent, one lane to and one lane from, and an ascending roadway that would made evel knevel loose his lunch. When I looked out the window and over the side...my body went limp because I was sure we were going to die. With all my theatrics my mom slept through the whole ordeal and my father thought it was hysterically funny. Me......not so much!! I was12 when this took place.....I just turned 60 and I can remember it like it was yesterday. I tell this story to my husband, son & daughter every so often and each time they look at me with a "glazed" look because they couldn't possibly understand the horror I felt. But I sympathize and understand your horror and know exactly what you mean. Thanks for letting me vent. Peace and love.
Are you sure that this was filmed on May 10th, 1980? I am not so sure, given that an absence of investigators on the southbound span nor are there any heavy equipment boats to stabilize and remove the dangling part of the broken cantilever over the channel. Also it appears that the remaining span already has two-way traffic signs in place, I don't think they could have just been put there overnight at a moment's notice. I'm not suggesting that this is not from 1980, I'm just thinking it might be a bit further from the fateful day of May 9th.
The Sunshine Skyway’s northbound span reopened on Sunday, 11 May 1980 after being checked out by the Florida DOT to make sure the span was structurally sound (the main channel pier adjacent to the channel pier left standing was hit by the falling steel from the southbound span upon impact by the Summit Venture) and to restripe the northbound span for two way traffic, which would be that way for seven years until the new Sunshine Skyway was built and opened in 1987.
It doesn't snow or get cold enough for the roads to be icy in Florida. Northern Florida gets snow once every few decades but St. Petersburg is too far south
I hate steel girder bridges...it really creeps me out having all that metal overtop of me...I couldn't imagine driving over the one while the other identical one eerily stands adjacent to it broken in 1/2 where people plunged to their death.
Moved here in 1969 mom started dating a fireman, she went over that bridge on the back seat of a BMW motorcycle. What a woman!!!
The grade on that bridge was always pretty crazy, but with the telephoto effect it just looks terrifying.
That would be among one of the most challenging bridges to drive across for someone with bridge anxiety.
Born and raised in Tampa. That bridge was terrifying. All metal up at the top. Very narrow too. Huge memories.
Yeah, I hated going over that old thing back then. It was messed up, lol.
PO G that. Bridge scares me
So lucky to be raised in paradise
The wind makes it sound more so
@@samanthamanley4624that bridge was demolished in 1991 😂
Crossed almost daily, Greyhound Driver retired, lived In Ft. Lonesome, close to Palmetto, knew of Mike Curtin!!!
what route or run did you hold down?

Wow, pretty scary.
Imagine hearing those awful sounds the day before.
I grew up in Clearwater the bridge was very scary with the metal gates on top
I'm working on a video of the Sunshine Skyway Bridge. Would it be possible to use a few seconds of footage from this video for it?
Looks like a monster eating you yeah the bridge has a very scary side even though I love it and other bridges archetecturally

Those look pretty cool and I wish it were there still! I love truss bridges!
Same I love them too
they have the fishing piers, but it just would feel the same as the 1950’s-1980’s
The footage is from May 11, 1980, not May 10.
How do you know? If it was taken on the 10th of May then it would have been taken on my 5th birthday.

Newspaper articles say it was several days after May 9th as the bridge had to be restriped and new signage installed.

The date must be wrong.
Nothin like driven it in the rain and feel your tires slip on the grate

optical illusion. you see the true angle at a distant side view.

optical illusion bc it looks like they're almost going straight up which is physically impossible. a distant side view gives you an accurate account.

Why was bridge built to be sohigh?
For ships to go under.

Big bridge
Terrifying
The skyway bridge now is just as scary!!!
The new bridge is nothing like the old one. The new one is nice and smooth and quiet.
No, thank you.

No wonder people kept driving off the edge, you can't see shit.

Vehicles were built stronger back then, made from metal, no power steering.
