    Love it James! I'm working on a broadcast template with all stock Ableton Plugins. A win I had today was fixing phase - to line up our crowd mics (placed in the middle of the room and capturing the in-house FOH mix) to line up with our broadcast mix, I had to delay the output of everything EXCEPT the crowd mics. The problem is I initially did this to the groups (vocal group, drum group, etc) instead of at the channel level - which means my drum smash, delay, and reverbs were 25ms BEFORE the dry signal getting sent to the master. *facepalm* There's always stuff to learn!

    We're really in our infancy. We have a direct feed from our PA which includes our Piano/Organ and choir. We video from the rear of church in our loft and have a wireless 5ghz audio feed which goes into our 4 channel mixer so I can control the volume. Planning to add 1 audience mic this weekend for testing and hopefully that should increase our audio quality. I say we but it's just me running the equipment. I'm a 40 year IT support guy who got a call from our pastor about broadcasting daily and weekend masses. Talk about baptism by fire, WOW! Thanks for the info as I talk my next baby step for better audio.

    I think we are close to Level 3. I recently noticed what you described for L4. It sounded great when I mixed it in my headphone, but later I played it on my truck’s stereo and all I could hear was the vocals. I was like, “How did I miss that?”

    Great ideas and comments!. We started streaming when Covid came on the scene. Initially, we could go live with it but a couple of months later, when we had to close our doors, we recorded both the music and the message on a Saturday, tweeked it a little and then put it on the website. The overall quality was far superior to live streaming. I have to confess we purchased items in a hurry. We use the sling product for the stream. My expertise is audio so I'm not really qualified to say whether or not the Sling is the best way to go. The current set up is using an output from our SQ 7, to an analog compressor (which is my preference), to MixBuss, to the stream. No edits, real time broadcast.
    I really don't like mixing with a mouse, and the other three volunteers don't either, so we're looking to get the Soft Tube interface. Lots more could be said but for now I'm open for comments, suggestions, criticism, to make a more professional broadcast. Thanks!. 😎

    I think the mix is good my prob is when I listen to the stream it's really low . Need to experiment with some of the techniques you mentioned to get the over all love stream mix louder . Im not a pro but i mix one Sunday for our Spanish church using an analog Mackie and the next Sunday (English main church, yes 2 separate services that run at the same time so when I'm not in one the mix suffers in the other) use a qsc touch mix which I like very much ... Thinking about selling one of my limbs two buy a second qsc for consistency..... Lol

    Thanks again James, great content. If I can add my own thoughts in these Covid times, a winning stream mix to me is also about meeting your congregational needs. When dealing with people finding themselves in a environment of isolation, this starts with giving them a degree of comfortably familiarity. Even though it's out of the sound tech's influence, song selection is paramount to whether people at home engage with the stream or not. Give them something they can relate to in the context of that local particular church. As you point out with levels of winning, I don't think perfection is necessarily the aim (such as level 5 adding in kick, snare etc) but mechanisms that add in familiarity (such as crowd mics, assuming you're allowed a congregation where you live!) along with appropriate compression, is the win. Alas, nobody is going to ever come up a congratulate you on your online compression technique but they'll notice it when it's missing!
    And for the record, we have got one drummer who actually goes around humming his kick pattern... He's committed. :-)

    Hi James, I live in Queensland Australia. we do our stream live so it's like mixing front of house but id call it front of TV. hahaha. Anyways it's super fun to do. I noticed you spoke about adding extra drums in. is that for a stream that is not going live as I'm struggling to get my head around doing drums to match the drummer while he is playing. we use a Yamaha CL7 desk for our broadcast. I would love to run into a DAW like Logic to add a mastering plugin or some extra pieces just to finish the mix. what are your thoughts on live broadcast into a DAW before going out to the internet and what sort of plugins would you suggest

  • @andrewdevasir

    Translate!!! Using group outs for broadcast mix doesn't really do the trick for me on analog mixers. The vocals are too out there than the instruments and my aux outs are maxed out for monitors. Front of house mix is great, the headphone mix is decent but the broadcast one is just ok. I know the digital mixers are better for this, but the British eqs on the analog mixers are just better. Or should I just go for an external EQ for the broadcast mix?

    Our live stream audio quality is somewhere between smoke signals, and AM radio at the moment. I knew our live stream audio wasn't great, but didn't realize it was horrendous until I missed church Sunday morning, and watched it on line. You could only hear the cymbals from the drummer, the lead singer was distorted, and there was no proof that the alto or soprano had their mics turned on. The only positive thing I can say about our live stream, was the pastors audio was acceptable. Our A/V team is struggling at the moment, as we are new to live streaming, and just transitioned from an analog to a digital mixer. I spent the rest of the day Sunday, and today scouring UA-cam for useful information on improving our live stream. I also did the unthinkable, and read the 157 page manual on the new mixer (gasp). I have a lot of ideas, on how to improve our live stream audio, but it remains to be seen how well those ideas are accepted coming from the newest member of the A/V team.

      Sounds like you've got an uphill battle, learning a new delivery format and a new console. Set up up virtual sound check and practice practice practice. You'll get there. And when you're getting great results, and you stay humble, people will respect your opinion, whether you're the new guy or not.

    I'm streaming with good volume, but the vocals are a little in front of the music being played through a computer and I have what sounds like pink noise coming through while streaming on facebook live. I'm using the X32 as my audio interface

    • @AttawayAudio
      @AttawayAudio  2 роки тому

      Hmm. Not sure what the pink noise could be. Have you tried pulling your vocals back a little bit? If you're doing it post-fader, just pull those sends back a 1-2 db.

  • @sven179
    @sven179 4 роки тому +1

    Livestreaming at our church was a big magnifying glass experience for me, and not in a good way. I'm definitely in the category of moving from 2 to 3. Your channel has been a great help in getting me going on that journey; for that, I want to thank you.
    Right now I'm mostly twiddling with trying to get the volume of the vocals just right on the livestream. For at our church, we don't have the manpower to do a separate mix for the livestream. So instead we've configured a separate (stereo) bus with post-fader sends from all channels, with the sends from the band turned lower and those from speaking mics turned higher (by a certain amount we've nailed by now ^_^). The idea is to make a default setting so that when the dynamics are good in the room, they're also good online. It's a trial and error phase right now, but I hope to have something done in the near future.
    Also, thank you for your words about comparing yourself to others. In preparation for a service I now tend to listen to recordings of the songs by the artists, to give me an idea of what a professional has done with the mix. When I later compare that to the result I got on Sunday morning, it feels rather discouraging. So thank you for your encouraging words! Your words especially fit since I do notice an improvement over the past few months, and that's the important part. Now it's my job to keep going, and pray that God will keep blessing my efforts with an improvement in quality. Thanks again!

    I currently mix in logic pro for my church lifestream. I know you mentioned using samples. I have used samples in the past, but, I seem to only be able to use them when editing a recording (and not when going live).
    Any advice ?

    • @AttawayAudio
      @AttawayAudio  3 роки тому

      You have to compensate for the delay that the trigger/sample plugin causes by delaying the OTHER plugins while in record/input mode. So however much delay the trigger/drumagog plugin causes, delay everything else by that amount.

    • @ItzTooSik
      @ItzTooSik 3 роки тому

      @@AttawayAudio Thank you for responding. I hear what you say.
      I’m not sure if you have ever tried it with Logic Pro but what I mean is that when I select what input I want Logic to receive from the board I select the snare channel from the board (channel 17, for example). After that, Logic receives the snare signal to Logic’s channel 17. When I use a snare sample, it must be inserted on an additional channel (whose input can’t be 17; it is labeled something like “drum machine trigger”). That channel gets triggered by some MIDI notes that I created based off my snare (channel 17) recorded waveform using flex pitch.
      In other words, the way I know to use it, I must first create a recording, flex pitch the waveform and replace those triggered MIDI notes with the drum replacement feature of Logic. I don’t know how to trigger drum samples prior to recording, especially if it’s a live church service.

    I would love some videos and content about managing your layers up through a mix. We use a DAW for our stream mix, and I don't see a lot of information about layering levels of compression, limiters, eq on busses/aux and then doing those same things on the mix buss. There are many volunteers in churches around me that are just musicians who understand technology enough to help their church get online.
    With your experience, I think you have a good opportunity to create content and points/opinions on things like why it's helpful to group guitars, or to have a compressor on the drum kit or individual channels or both! There are many videos demonstrating the process, but not much out there about a "talkthrough" on how they contribute to the goal of a live stream mix. mostly because live streaming music in church is relatively new to many of us.
    Stuff I haven't been able to find good answers (in terms of mixing for live stream) that I am confident you could easily teach:
    - options to group instruments in an aux/bus and what (if any) plugins to apply
    - compression layers throughout a mix (ex. snare -> drum bus -> band bus? -> sub mix?)
    - balancing the EQ vs the volume of a reverb for vocals
    - effective use of limiters for live mix
    - keeping the drums alive without overpowering the mix or being hidden with the other instruments
    - general tips about translating your mix over devices
    Love your content, you are helping elevate our church's online presence. thank you!
