    One thing that nobody mentions about these turbo's is that Ford stocks a nickel based high temp (2400F) anti seize formula for use in these turbos. If your truck doesn't move much or goes on short trips a lot it is important to paint them up to prevent the sticking problems. It also helps somewhat with the carbon buildup.

    @rquarantine The Ford Gold coolant is just fine if you flush and fill every 30,000 miles. If you want to go further the installation of the coolant filter and ELC will help protect your coolant system.

    I'm a gearhead so I fully understand what you mean about diagnosing something sight unseen. I'll inspect the pan plug and see if I can find any obvious cracking of the flexplate. It just seemed somehow turbo related to me since the sound seems to be coming from under the hood, is rpm affected, and is effecting performance somewhat (acceleration is not quite up to par). Thank you so much for your help. I've already learned much about these diesels from watching your vids.

    I Absolutely love your videos and think it is one of the coolest things i have seen. I think it is awesome that you take the time to share your knowledge and experience with us so that we may avoid the mistakes so many people before us have made. I cant imagine how much money and possible financial ruin you have saved people from. Everyone i know or learn of that has one of these trucks i tell them about your web site. That being said i salute you my friend and thank you again! Brett from Utah

    @BuhlzI I have not seen a VGT conversion for the 7.3 ... yet. Yes DPF regeneration will contaminate the oil with fuel. If left unchanged will kill the main and rod bearings. I have seen it about 25 times now. I am convinced that the lack of lube from fuel contamination is what makes the rocker arms fail also.

    Building a 1969 F600 into a car hauler. Im coming to see you for a motor and trans - probably a 6.0 retrofit as if it was a F350. Im convinced youre the one and I figure a change of pace build will help with the monotony. Im hoping to find a wreck with all the parts I need and just get you guys to rebuild it and add all the good stuff. See you hopefully before summer is gone.

    95k 2006 2WD F350 crew cab here. Bought this unit used 3 years ago. Pull a 281/2 Ft RV TT bumper pull with a 6,500lb wet weight - not too bad. Since I've had it, it's always had a slow lag, slow spin up feel off the line. Then bam! It'll get up to ramming speed in a hurry. I'm okay with that, but lately this last year (2017), as I'm towing on grades (3 -6%), the turbo shuts down and gives me either a CEL or the wrench/tool icon. Nothing ever overheats as far as I can determine. Each time during these climbs, as you know, I'm screwed, glued and tattooed - no power, inching over the climb at 35-40mph until I finish the climb. Once I can pull over after the climb, I'll do the usual code reading and end up with that P0299 code. I can sit for a few minutes, start back up, the warning lights all go away, and I've got my boost back again until I hit another climb - then the whole thing starts over again. With the travel trailer off, or at home again, I can run around town, down the freeway, drive like I'm in a drag race, and never ever see those dash lights again until the next time I tow. What up? Turbo? I don't hear any weird noises, no black smoke, nothing seems wrong until I tow up a hill. Time for a gas job? This is my second diesel... my 1st being a 7.3.

    • @garydavid9705
      @garydavid9705 6 років тому

      My truck does the same thing when towing, and sets the p0299 code if I take off before the turbo spools up when it's cold-vgt sticking. I was told the turbos are worn out at about 100000 miles. I might take mine off and pull it apart and inspect it.

    Bmw Saab and recently volvo have this set up with two different turbos : one working after the other.
    It's called "étagé" here .
    it would be translated as "layered"
    or biturbo wich do not give the size distinction between the two however.
    Interesting video as always !

    A clogged air filter will create a vacuum in the intake that will pull oil through the CCV. This can cause this problem.

    Now I own a 1991 300ZX turbo and it is on it's third set of turbos in it's 100,000 mile lifetime, admittedly it's been run hard. I have learned my lesson with turbos. What you want to do with any turbocharged motor is let it idle up a little before you drive it, and idle down a little before you shut it off to let the oil get in and out of the turbos. You need to keep the oil level full also. If the vehicle is down a 1/2 quart, don't wait until your next oil change, put the 1/2 quart in it!

    it may be a dirty turbo but more than likely it needs to be tuned. I have inhouse 6.0 tuning for both the FICM and PCM that will more than likely fix the problem.

  • @PepegaPig
    @PepegaPig 12 років тому

    VAG has something called a VNT which is the same technology (in terms of the variability) which suffers the same problem. Unfortunately it's a common problem, but as long as you give your car regular oil changes, and get EGT temperatures up to a high level (high loads, high revs) - Most people unfortunately just drive like grannies and they get gunked up.
    Another good video, really like your explanations of things even though I'm not interested in these types of engines :) Keep it up!

    @bigtim9119 I like the Ford PowerStroke because of the way it drives and handles loads. A properly running PowerStroke is the best truck on the road. As far as used I have seen 7.3 junk as well as 6.4 junk. It all has to do with how the previous owner treated and took care of the vehicle. The 2011-2012 is the nicest smoothest truck I have ever driven but it is also 60 grand. For the money the 99-03 is the best bargain, the miles are irrelevant. Cheaper and easier to fix and run.

    Interesting way around the problem of low rpm boost threshold and max power: usually mutually exclusive parameters. But not at a high cost: correct me if I’m wrong, but if a vane breaks or the actuator ring breaks you are looking at catastrophic engine failure. Love my 12v 96 Cummins!

  • @powerstrokehelp

    @SC45091 4" is more than enough. Expect to lose some fuel economy. The 6.0 likes a little back pressure. BUT your turbo will be cooler in towing situation.

    Yep, Id snatch that turbo off of there and take a hard look at it. At the very least remove the air intake tube and see how much end play is in the turbo shaft bearing.

  • @TysonCapel23
    @TysonCapel23 5 років тому

    I just had a major turbo failure. The impellers on the exhaust side and the intake side both seized. On top of this the fins for the veins the shafts that hold them in on 4 of them sheared off so the blades were sitting down in there not even attached. I have no idea how that happened.
    I had a guy following close behind me so I punched on the gas to get some space between us and when I did so I heard a pop sound and started to lose a bunch of power. Along with this a bunch of white smoke was coming out my exhaust which told me my turbo just went. With loss of powerand white exhaust that told me the turbo went out because the air to fuel ratio isn't right which would mean there's not enough air in the combustion chamber to burn all the fuel being put in which would put lots of white smoke out the exhaust. Got it home took the turbo off and that's what I found. I just hope small metal particles didn't get sucked up into the engine. I didn't see any small metal particles in the turbo anywhere and it looks like the shaft sheared off clean.

    you need to drop the transmission pan and see if there is a bunch of metal on the magnet. It sounds like a torque converter going bad. Possibly could be a bad flex plate.

    Can you ease explain the 15% and 85% that we see on diagnostic or sct2 units? My turbo is flipping from 85 to 15 percent and now it is staying around 15 and I have no boost. Is 15% a reference to 15% closed or open(vanes), i am just trying to understand this operation.

    @powerstrokehelp  11 років тому

    You are asking the wrong guy. I dont have time for this sort of silliness. If you can actually get the Turbo to physically mount with no exhaust leaks AND have some sort of screwy wiring to the TPS. What Tuning do you run? Nobody has written tunes for a VGT on a old 7.3L with VERY VERY slow cpu. The fact is that you will probably never get enough fuel at low end to feed the boost of a 6.0L VGT turbo. It would take 100s of tuning hours to get to run right.

    I found the 6.0 to be EXTREMELY laggy off the line. So much that the term "Cowboy Kick" was coined for the way the boost came on. I would show people how laggy it was by flooring it and waiting for the boost. Most people were astonished. "punch off the line" is the last phrase I would use for a 6.0.

    • @aaronbradley4361

    • @Cocokingable1
      @Cocokingable1 8 років тому +1

      Thats because when you go from idle to 100% throttle, youre pouring more fuel than the air at that point. If you brake and spool just 3lbs of boost then mash it, i guarentee youll quit your bitching.

    • @Mayo07J
      @Mayo07J 8 років тому

      Brake boosting is just reducing the lag that is inherent in the truck. You're not going to brake boost at every stop.

    closing off the exhaust to protect it from humidity will work against you... same as if you seal a vented head lamp, it will cause it to sweat internally as temps change daily... because there is already air in there with water in it that will show it self as temps drop... colder air is capable of holding less water.

I dont start getting boost until around 1500 to 1700 RPM and its very slow out of the gate, but once it does build boost its like a rocket. It seems better if i ease into the throttle but i was just wondering if this is normal? I know one thing is for sure im a little punchy pulling out in to traffic. Thanks in advance

    Thank you for the excellent information on the Ford F350. We own a 08 F350 6.4 with 260K that recently made a brief noise that sounded like what I would imagine bearings being spun out. The truck then began blowing large amounts of black smoke out the exhaust on acceleration and under load and the mileage has dropped from 19.8 to 16.6 over a two week period of time. The truck drives OK although the power level does feel diminished somewhat. The DTC is throwing the following codes P2263 (Turbo charger/supercharger system performance) and P0703 (Torque converter /brake switch b circuit). I'm assuming (based on the noise I heard and this p2273 DTC) that this means I most likely need a new turbo charger installed. Would you agree and could you advise me on what a fair range of cost for this repair might be ?

    My '05 Excursion 6.0 is making a rattling sound that resembles marbles shaking in a coffee can when operating around 2000 rpm. It's directly associated with placing more load on the engine when I get in the throttle. It seems to go away under heavy acceleration as the engine sweeps through its operating rpm range, but with every upshift that loads it back down to around 2000 rpm, the rattling comes back, and then goes away again as rpm's increase. Performance seems off a bit too. Is it my turbo?

    I cant diagnose a truck I have not seen. It is physically impossible. You ask my opinion and all I can give are possibilities. IF there is no metal in the pan then more than likely the transmission is ok internally. You may be dealing with a bad flywheel/flexplate which will require removal of the transmission. I really need to diagnose it in person to see.

    Hey Bill, I drive a 07 F-550 with the 6.0all stock 120,000 miles. Is possible for the turbo not be turning or working and the engine still running (no power at all and lost of black smoke) because this just happen to me and I don't hear the turbo when the engine is running it's like if the turbo just shut down, won't rev at all, press the pedal and kinda works but then sounds like it just stop turning no boost at all . Thanks for your videos, they help a lot.

    Hey bill i was towing about 3000 pound trailer with my 2005 f350 6.0, now my truck ran good except for a few times. When it would reach overdrive it would kick in and the egt temps would jump from 1000 to 1200 and i would have no power in the peddle i had to ram the peddle to the ground to downshift to get going again. Also my turbo once in a while would all of a sudden jump from 10 psi to 25 psi and then back down again any ideas? its been bulletproofed.

    On my 2004 6.0, when u first start it, and then take off, most of the time, the turbo doesn't engage for a few seconds. Any suggestions to why?

    Will the tunes work with an un modified truck? My truck is bone stock with the exception of Edge insight gauges and a 4" banks exhaust. I do have the SCT tuner and tried the canned tunes that come with it but i was afraid of blowing a head gasket or damaging the transmission so i put it back to stock. Thanks in advance

    What would you need to do for wiring to put a 2003 6.0l turbo on a obs 7.3 powerstroke?

    I bought a 6.4 from a guy. I just realised that he deleted the dpf but he didnt tune it. Could that be one of the reasons why I am having turbo failures. Its telling me that when I diagnose my check engine light.

    Ya i get that, do you think maybe it could just be the tune on the truck i dunno if its stock or not i have to strategy codes for it but dont know if its a stock tune or not. It was running at about 1800 rpm in O/D could that contribute to it? i hear ppl saying it should be at around 2000 rpm so that you have all the torque.

    bill i know this is off track here but how do u feel about the cat elc coolant in the 6.0 i have heard a lot of people say that the premium gold coolant turns into gel and clogs stuff up ford replaced my egr cooler not to long ago and i want to make it last until i have enough dough to get my truck to u for bulletproofing.......thanks

    And how much premium do people pay for the right to own a diesel like this? I would be afraid to buy a use 6.0 or 6.4 powerstroke. Great video.

    hey bill,considering either the 6.4 or 6.7. what needs to be done to the 6.4 in order to "bulletproof" it and if I was to do this, what is the best way to ship it from Canada to your shop
    thanks

    Bill, I have an 03 6.0 that has been bulletproofed and then some. The one thing i dont have but really need is gauges. Anyways, here's my problem. Back in November i was climbing a long grade in Elko NV when all of a sudden i heard a noise that sounded like a high pressure air nozzle. All of my intercooler hoses are fine. I was even told that my intercooler itself was bad and after 900 dollars i found out that it was not. it sounds like it is coming from the turbo. any help would be appreciated

    Hey Powerstrokehelp.. I know this is an old video but I thought I was worth a try.. after spending thousands on injectors and other stuff I started digging in myself. My 06 F350 6.0 smokes on acceleration (when cold) and sometimes when cold there’s a bit of a haze on start up.. I noticed my EBPS is at 60psi at idle and a couple hundred WOT.. I got a new ebps and same thing... I even plugged it in while out of exhaust manifold and even then it reads 54psi... when I unplug the ebps the smoke goes away and it seems like the turbo is more powerful then too.. could you point me in the right direction ?

    dear powerstroke help, i have a 04 f350 bone stock except for an egr delete kit. it is very sluggish accelerating until it gets to 2nd gear. then its fine. only way its smooth, is if i ease into it. if i give it anything more, its slow. what could be causing it to be so sluggish?? ive heard various things about the turbos getting clogged. any opinion?
