Agreed! The prices in Svalbard are wayyyyyy lower than in D.C., and many places in the US. I live in Germany now and prices here are similar to Svalbard. Germans think prices are too high. What people often forget is that in the Nordic countries (excluding Norway) middle class income is around 4k usd a month (before taxes, after taxes below 3k) so 1200 to 1400 usd a month on food is a considerable amount. Even with two middle class incomes. Now we don’t know what Cecilia makes so but up to 1400 a month is a lot for just 2 people. Imagine what bigger families have to spend.

It's amazing to have this supermarket basically a stone's throw from the North Pole. I used to live north of the Arctic Circle - about twice as far from the North Pole as Svalbard. That extra 1300 km really puts things in perspective - Svalbard is truly at the doorstep of the Pole. And the scenery - especially the northern lights - are simply magnificent.

I am a night time person and love to walk around our local forests and take pictures of Aurora and stars on cold clear nights. We don't get as much darkness as you guys but still enough. These Polar Night videos are super cozy and lovely to watch. I would absolutely love to live somewhere like that - can't think of anywhere I would rather be. The grocery prices shown were actually quite similar to what you'd find in my medium-sized Midwestern (USA) city, cheaper in a few cases. That was shocking, I was sure things would be higher since everything has to be shipped/flown in. Very interesting.

I was thinking the same thing. I live an hour as the crow flies from Hollywood, and everything is astronomically expensive, including fresh produce grown right here or just south of the border. And the store in Longyearbyen has a MUCH better selection than my California grocery chain! Those crisp breads! 😍 We used to get them when I lived in the Netherlands too, along with the round rusks. There's something so satisfying about Northern European shopping. 😊 Everything is packaged so nicely and looks so appealing.

Today we had a 116 degree Fahrenheit heat index due to the high humidity here. The actual temp was 97. Earlier this week, we had a 116 degree heat index on a 92 actual temp day. Your toes sweat the minute you step outside in sandals. In closed shoes, your feet area already sweating. Winter comes sometimes for a few days in December with extreme temps in the 20-freezing temp of 32. Winter is more a January/February thing, but even then it can be 50-70 degrees with 90s by April.
