We always talk about how funny he is but I feel he doesn't get enough credit for his vocal abilities. Especially when you know he actually held that last note for that long.
A lot of his songs have jokes that require amazing breath control. There's the middle eight of "Your Horoscope for Today," the first verse of the "Weird Al Show" theme song (which is also a run-on sentence to boot!) and obviously "Hardware Store," not just the middle eight by the verses too!
For those wonderwing what he was doing at 0:22 and 1:48, this version has the movie's credits removed. In the first he was slapping some text away and in the second he saw his own name credited.
+DutchBlackMantha They should put in some annotations. He could slap one and look at the other.
In the 2003 music video collection, these are both intact, but the other credits are gone for legal reasons.
It was a genius idea to have Weird Al do the theme song. It had the level of hilarity that only Al could deliver
He wasn't even known back then... And TBF I didn't know him until I watched this yesterday.
@@_lucas.antunes_ Because you hadn't heard of him doesn't mean he was a nobody. Yankovic was already a well-known artist and actor back then and also had cameos in every Naked Gun.
@@_lucas.antunes_ Al had been big for over a decade when this movie came out.
lovely theme song RIP Leslie Nielsen 1926-2010
Patrick Stapleton I miss him...such a great actor and comedia...God bless him always
This is my favourite Bond theme
And all the Bonds from Sean Connery to Daniel Craig are just watching this movie and either laughing or getting insulted.
There will never be another Leslie Nielsen and that hurts me. It's good that he's immortalized on film for future generations.
I know this is a pastiche of James Bond songs in general, but you’ve got at least three different specific Bond themes being referenced in this sequence:
- “Thunderball”: Both the main melody and the ridiculously long note at the end.
- “Goldfinger”: The repeating of the movie’s title over and over at the end echoes the end of the theme to “Goldfinger” (although the ending to the “Goldfinger” theme features variations on “he loves gold” rather than the name “Goldfinger”).
- “For Your Eyes Only”: Currently the only James Bond movie to feature the singer (in that case Sheena Easton) in the opening credit sequence. It was released about 15 years before “Spy Hard”.
Edit: The visual style of these credits (including the swimming silhouettes) is also a nod to the opening credits of “Thunderball”.
I THOUGHT THIS VERY EXACT SAME WAY. Im glad someone else did too.
"On Her Majesty's Secret Service": Half of the theme intro (the part that comes before the synth, I mean).
He must work at the CIA, I heard they have a better dental plan than the FBI.
He sang the last "spy hard" part for almost 20 seconds until his head exploded! WOW!
This video contains:
30% water
5% silhouettes
65% -aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa...
Actually it's
30% Water
25% Sillouettes
30% Weird Al
15% AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA
When I was a kid, I was scared and cried at this head explosion scene. I can never forget it.
Me too. Parents rented it and I watched it when they went to sleep. The mime getting killed and this song really scared me. I was kind of a pussy as a kid. Didn’t understand the lack of logic in these parody movies. Really freaked me out.
If they make another Austin Powers movie, and get Weird Al to do the soundtrack, we might actually save the planet because everyone would be laughing so hard.
One of Weird Al's best songs: Love this move!
-- Lyrics --
0:13 Start
A man of intrigue, he lives for the thrill
Always has places to go and people to kill
Danger is the game he plays, and he holds every card
'Cause if you wanna win, you've gotta spy hard
A man of the world so suave and discreet
He trips over the women piled up at his feet
But evil's lurking, so he's always on his guard
'Cause if you're gonna spy, you better spy hard
He's always there when the chips are beginning to fall
He wouldn't care
If they kicked him and grabbed him
And shot him and stabbed him
And nailed both his ears to the wall
Facing death everyday is a tough job for any man
But his hours are flexible
And He's got a great dental plan
By the way if you walked in late,
Allow me to reiterate:
The name of this movie is "Spy Hard"
They call it "Spy Hard"
You're watching "Spy Hard"
It's the theme from "Spy Haaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaard"
theChillChanneL : thanks for the lyrics, my hearing isn’t what it used to be so this was great!
This intro song is extra funny to me because I remember this movie was on TV when I was a kid and I was wondering what the movie was called. Then 1:59 hits and I began laughing like a madman. Just brilliant.
5th and then the first day of your school 🚸 I would be interested to see the new place in my
How Al was able to hold that final syllable of the lyrics... Now THIS is sheer vocal prowess.
Funny thing is, originally, it was gonna be digitally extended, but Al found out he was able to just.. hold it normally. So he did!
Despite the goofy lyrics, this would make a great bond theme!
I know it’s a riff on the bond themes, but the actual instrumentals would be sweet in a bond movie.
Jack Bar Totally it would! The music totally rocks! I totally agree with you!
It is actually a parody of the opening song/credits of the 007 movie Thunderball.
actually, its the parody of Thunderball, by Tom Jones, who fainted when I sang the final note...
Especially since half the Bond themes already have goofy lyrics. Remember "Goldfangah"? *shudder*
TIL he actually held the final note for that long in the studio
Horoscope has one of my favorite lines from anything ever in it: "Taurus You will never find true happiness - what you gonna do, cry about it? The stars predict tomorrow you'll wake up, do a bunch of stuff, and then go back to sleep."
I like the part where he stops and goes "K I L L T H E M" like wow, that's dark for a weird al song.
Don't worry about Al's head; it'll grow back.
I knew he was from a different planet! At least he is doing something good, not stealing watches and selling them like his cousin Jeebs does.
Grti Arde Weird Al isn't just from another planet- he's from another dimension. A dimension not only of sight and sound but of mind. You unlock this door with the key of your imagination. Your next stop is… The Weird Al Zone.
+Barrobroadcastmaster Is this dimension occupied by aliens who look like Jamie Farr?
TinyFoxTom Yes. Yes it is. Just watch out for the floating disembodied head of Colonel Sanders.
My dad told that when I was a kid (like really a kid maybe 3-5 y.o) I was a fan of this video and cried of laughter when Al's head exploded. I was saying something like "look, he broke his head!" and was so happy. Dad was afraid that I could be a psychopath
Without the titles, a couple of visual jokes are lost.
Is there anywhere I could find the video with the original names put in? As you said, the visual gags are lost on me...
We love the silliness of Al!
A SILLY world is a BETTER world! Love you Al!
I only realized now that it was al yankovic in Spy Hard...
Makes the best movie ever even better
delax000 He is in two of the three Naked Gun movies. Naked Gun 1 (After the open scene after Nelson gets off the plane) and Naked Gun 33 1/3 (They steal White and Al's clothing and invite to the award show).
also in 2 1/2 as the mugger in the police station before frank slams the door on him into submission
I know i'm going to be howled down, but this song is so much better than some of the current bond songs.
I wouldn’t have been able to fully appreciate this back when I first saw the movie. Now, with all my James Bond fandom and watching experience, this is gold! It’s definitely based on “Thunderball” more than anything else, and his head exploding at the end is genius when you know the story about what happened to Tom Jones.
@@ericblade6152 he was belting out the final note so hard that he supposedly passed out.
@@smoothALOE Fun fact, originally, Al's "AA" was going to be stretched out digitally, but he found out he could extend the note himself pretty easily.
Greatest credit sequence ever. I remember almost choking when I first saw it, I was in histerys laughing.
+Fer Abra I love the very end of the song. This is spy hard!
I still dream of seeing a retro Bond style flick starring Yankovic. Sigh, probably always be a dream.
Did none of you see UHF? And you call yourselves Weird Al fans. S. M. H.
Trivia: Weird Al's head exploding after holding the long final note is a reference to Tom Jones, who supposedly passed out in the recording studio while holding the final note for the theme of James Bond film Thunderball (1965)
The girl swimming crazy always cracks me up and the random things!
That was the best part of that movie. And it got me in the right mood to enjoy the rest of the movie. Ever since I’ve had a soft spot for that movie.
The new bond looks very promising!
I still have a copy of this movie...Leslie Nielsen you will be missed you funny fucking bastard
It's pretty sad that the song of a spy parody has more Bond feelings than the one in an official Bond film.
Benny Kwok The editors sure did a great Maurice Binder imitation with that title sequence. :)
From the Bonds nowadays...Heck Yeah this is more 'Bond' than them!
Sadly, the same can be said for a LOT of Bond films, especially in the 80s and every Bond film since The World Is Not Enough.
Круть! Я смотрел этот фильм в детстве. Этот саундтрек я до сих пор вспоминаю с теплотой. Спасибо Эл 👍
By far the best part of this movie.
*Director:* How long can you hold the last note"
*Weird Al:* Yes
The name of this movie is "Skyfall".
They call it "Skyfall".
You're watching "Skyfall".
It's the theme from "Skyfall"!!!!
@@cademccool2122 Are you kidding? How do you beat a scuba battle like that? It's the best fight in the franchise!
You couldn’t ask for a better parody of Thunderball’s credit sequence or its theme song. Al does Tom Jones shockingly well!!
❔️❔️❔️5th of the week and I am going to have to do with the world 🗺 to the bank
Leslie Nielsen may you R.I.P in peace
I remember watching this on TV years ago; I had no idea it was Weird Al Yankovic singing. That head explosion still frightens me, though...
I remember when I first watched this movie with my mom when I was little I was so excited when I saw Al doing the theme. I thought it was awesome and wanted him to do themes for other movies.
*Me when I infiltrate and investigate a Discord server:*
Its pretty hard to nail BOTH of your ears to the wall, I'd imagine.
+Michael Alford - hehe, the lyrics say "He wouldn't care, if they kicked him and grabbed him and shot him and stabbed him and nailed both his ears to the wall." So, it's not him that's nailing his ears to the wall, it's them. :) I agree, it would be hard to do that by yourself.
By the way if you walked in late, allow me to reiterate, the name of this movie, is Spy Haaaard
Absolute genius.
Another well done song from Weird Al, and a fun movie by Leslie Nielsen.
They played this song during the end credits as well, and I remember someone had enough attention to detail that the lyric "The name of this movie is Spy Hard" to "the name of this movie _was_ Spy Hard"
I was not prepared for his head to explode at the end; actually burst out ugly-laughing, snorts and everything:)
Wonderful visual gag, right when i started questioning seriously how he could hold that note. Perfect comedy timing!
Watching Spy Hard is how I got first familiarized with Weird Al Yankovic.
Best thing ever :D
This song has been forever stuck in my head since I first heard it when I was a kid. I remember waiting for it to play on mtv so I could record it on my vcr, and I would play it over, and over, and over lol
I can actually see him shrinking at the end as he expels all the air from his lungs to hold the note...
They should be ashamed that the official Skyfall theme says Skyfall more times than Weird Al says Spy Hard.
It’s a shame Weird Al never got a shot at a proper James Bond movie theme tune . This spy hard one is great though Al’s voice on that last note is truly a gift 👍😊. I still rewatch this movie just for this weird al intro and rip leslie nielsen
*Clicks video, switches windows, ad for Beyonce plays*
...This doesn't sound ANYTHING like the song I remember.
Eirik W Adblock plus lowers the income of your favorite content creators. Don't advertise adblock on sites it affects, that's just scummy.
Zoshi I have no problem using Adblock Plus on sites that feature intrusive, autplaying ads, like UA-cam does. I leave it off on sites that do not. This is necessary to combat the escalating intrusiveness of internet ads.
Zoshi Depends. In this case we're on VEVO, which aside from producing no original content whatsoever is owned by the Abu Dhabi Media Company, which is wholly owned by the government of Abu Dhabi. Let's say they have money.
In cases where advertising money goes directly to the creators (such as Weird Al), it'd be a different story. But that's seldom the case.
HB45175 Advertising Adblock on UA-cam affects every content creator a subscriber who acts upon the advertisement watches, regardless of which channel the advertisement was posted to. Don't try to justify it with loose, invalid technicalities.
Eirik W I have no problem with you using adblock if you have a valid reason and know the consequences, and neither do most content creators I know. It's advocating the use of it without mentioning the negative repercussions that's scummy.
weird al is the opposite of bond in every way- this is a compliment
what a set of pipes has Weird Al! Genius level lyrics and facial expressions , as usual. great nod to goldfinger, and that last amazing note... he always delivers!
When he looks to the side and winks its cause in the opening credits of the movie thats when his name shows up. :D
LOL. I like it when they zoom into his nose. They usually zoom into the eye or something but this is just perfect
The endless high note to finish the song is a great reference to Tom Jones and Thunderball.
This video really needs the titles included.
It's the best James Bond movie opening ever made!

I always have a smile on my face when I watch this music video with the music. Perfect combo.
As least he's got a good dental plan...
This video is funnier when it has the credits. Like when he looks at "song by Weird Al Yankovic" and smiles and nods.
Weird Al should make an actual Spy Hard movie…..
Would he play the Leslie Neilsen character? If so hell yeah. He's the only one cool enough to replace Leslie.
The first time I've listened to Weird Al song was when I saw Spy Hard at the cinema. Little did I knew back then that this song was from such a famous humoristic artist.
Wow, the uncut sequence! Thanks. I remember watching this in the theater. :)
RIP Mr. Nielsen. You will be missed!
Al... you butthead... this was awesome! Ever since "another one rides the Bus"... you have blown me away! Keep up the good work!
I'd rather listen to this on an endless loop than one minute of the Spectre theme song.
So you're one of *those* people that doesn't like masterpieces if they're too popular.
+KRetor Irather listen to "Writing's on the Wall" ten times than hearing this again.
@@timekeeper2538 No, just one of *those* people who doesn't like songs that SUCK! :D
great film. love the classics
This was a new one for me. I've never heard this song before, even though I've been a 'Weird Al Yankovic' fan for years!
5th of the month and the only reason why we are going out to dinner tonight was that we know that
It’s not about singing , it’s about Comedy and that is great !! I love changing the words to songs
This song and title sequence were the best part of this movie.
I still love how he altered the lyrics during the end credits to make it fit seemlessly that, "It's the end of Spy Haaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaard!"
It is specifically a parody of the theme song and opening credit sequence of “Thunderball” (1965), sung by Tom Jones.
That yellow silhouette at 2:03 🤣
Brilliant and a real standout as movie themes go.
Needs the ORIGINAL credits. Part of the comedy was Al playing with the credits, including the proud look at one - HIS CREDIT for the theme!
When the song ends, a chunk of the audience just leaves.
best thing is this was actually the intro to the movie - SPY HARD.. R.I.P Leslie Nielsen ! thank you for all the laughs and good memories...
I know Vevo would never do this, but they should add a couple annotations to this video to replace the missing opening credits.
I believe at the beginning he slaps the title. And near the end he is surprised to see his own credit, and gives a nod. Two gags that fall by the wayside, as this is the version without the credits, from the Weird Al video collection DVD.
That last note is just a fraction shy of 20 seconds. That's insane.
lol this has to be one of my favourite films of all time, i think its about time to buy it on dvd.
Every 007 actor from Sir Sean Connery to Daniel Craig are saying: This is insulting however it is funny at the same time.
Ian Fleming: I'm rolling in my grave right now.
I've read a few of Fleming's JAMES BOND novels. The movies allegedly based on them bore almost no resemblance. In fact, I'd say the movies were as much a parody of Fleming's work as SPY HARD was a parody of the Bond films.
Later, Fleming wrote the screenplays first, and then the novels, basing the books on the films. Even if he was still alive, I seriously doubt that Fleming could possibly care less - other than to protect his copyrights.
This should be the intro to the next bond movie.
This was my introduction to "Weird Al" Yankovic.
I am eternally grateful to this movie.
Still the best bond song idc
THIS IS A VERY FUNNY MOVIE WEIRD AL IS A TALENTED COMEDIAN AND SINGER THATS AMAZING I HOPE HE SINGS MORE SONGS I'M A FAN OF WEIRD AL .
She actually did really really good on the Skyfall theme.
A man who has a camel is rich. A man who drives a Ferrari can get lucky
I watched a Fact Fiend episode yesterday that briefly mentioned this song and this morning it comes up in my feed. The UA-cam AI is listening to the videos you watch!
Fun fact: Originally, Yankovic had planned to loop the note at the end to the required length but in the studio he discovered that he was able to hold the note long enough that no looping was required.
Actually I have a Chrome extension called WikiTube which shows relevant videos at the top of Wikipedia articles. This was the first one :D
Thanks Reddit
For real, Thank you Reddit TIL
The joke there is based on an actual incident. When Tom Jones was recording the theme song to "Thunderball," he held the end note so long that he passed out. He wasn't expecting to do it that long, but composer John Barry kept signaling him through the studio window to keep going, so he did.
Undeterred...See, now if Tom Jones head exploded at the end...That would of been a better song! HA! ;-p
