    Absolutely was underrated - sometimes I think some experts have ears but not "heart". You have to listen to Lanza with your heart because he was singing to that really. Callas was too, and some knocked her.
    I was listening to a Met performance the other day and the tenor got much applause, probably because he could force out a high note here and there, notes with "technique" to make it work written all over them
    I like many singers but golly some that we pay today should listen to Lanza and then go back to square one.

    Mario Lanza-this scene from the movie Serenade was sublime but never was given the accolades it deserved and neither was his acting. In my opinion -maybe one day critics will finally acknowledge just how great he was. Unfortunately Mario thought this film could re-launch his career but instead the critics only picked on him for his appearance instead of his superb singing-what an injustice was done to this wonderful man. May he rest in well-deserved peace!

    The standard for this aria is Jon Vickers in my humble opinion. Lanza is certainly very good. So difficult to judge a singer who has not performed the role on stage. At his best he was very good and has obviously left an amazing legacy. Anyone who says he was untrained is plain wrong. There is no way a singer could accomplish what Lanza did without a very solid technique which he had in spades!

      he sang Madama Butterfly on stage

    • @edwardkerrigan5356
      @edwardkerrigan5356 3 роки тому +1

      As well as three performances in Butterfly in New Orleans, he previously sang Fenton (to great acclaim by the national music critics who attended the festival) in 'The Merry Wives of Windsor' at the Berkshire Music Festival, on his graduation from his opera course at the Berkshire School of Music, Tanglewood, Mass. He was given a free scholarship to Berkshire, by it's director, the conductor Serge Koussevitsky, who heard Lanza sing when on a conducting engagement in Philadelphia, where Lanza lived. He said at the time that 'A voice like this comes along only once in a hundred years'. Lanza's budding career, which was always directed at the operatic stage, was put on hold immediately on his return home from Tanglewood, by his call up into the military, where he spent the next three years, returning to civilian life in 1945. He then resumed his training in New York, eventually spending sixteen months studying with Enrico Rosati, who was the vocal coach and teacher to many greats, among them Beniamino Gigli. Like Koussevitsky, he also was amazed by Lanza's voice and is quoted as saying 'I have waited twenty-three years for this voice'. So, yes, he lacked the on-stage operatic experience, but he had a very extensive concert career both prior to going into films and beyond , and his amazing instinctive feeling for the music he recorded, much of the time resulted in performances which stood up very well to comparison with those of singers who had stage experience. The consensus, if assessed without prejudice, has to be, that the direction he finally took deprived the opera world of what could have been one of it's greatest tenors.

    • @toff358
      @toff358 3 роки тому

      *Roman Branc* You`re very poorly informed. I suggest you read Edward Kerrigan`s response to you, to which I would add that Lanza was indeed a formally trained opera singer and rightly always regarded himself as such. Enrico Rosati was not his only noted vocal coach; another was the distinguished repetiteur Leila Edwards who coached him for the Role of Pinkerton with the New Orleans Opera Company in 1948, and was later to remark on how quickly he picked up the role. Yet another was the fine veteran baritone and Lanza`s colleague and friend, Robert Weede. Yet another still, was Caruso`s coach, Giacomo Spadoni, and in the final period of Lanza`s life, in Italy, he had two distinguished coaches, Annibale Bizelli - a coach from the Rome Opera - and Franco Zauli. To the list of Lanza`s operatic appearances mentioned by Mr Kerrigan, I would add that in 1940, then 20, he joined the former Rome Opera tenor Rodolpho Pili`s 'Grand Opera Company', performing in several opera`s under Pili`s direction at venues around Philadelphia. An example is 'Crispino e la Comare', an 1850 work by Frederico and and Luigi Ricci in which Lanza performed the lead tenor role - to "huge success" according to writer and critic Marion Benasutti.
      You`ve heard and seen here what many would regard as one of the finest interpretations of this aria extant - superbly, excitingly and so convincingly sung, marvelously enacted, and yet you say "He was not an opera singer". Apparently you`re quite unable to allow yourself to hear through your very obvious dismissive prejudice.
      Lanza knew personally many of the established opera singers of his time (including Bjorling, Tucker, Albanese, Tebaldi to name a few), who all admired him and so wanted him to join them at the Met and the other great opera houses. Here`s the abbreviated assessment of Lanzas` voice by some of them. Di Stefano "... I don`t think he realised how good he was..." Dorothy Kirsten "...Mario could have sung in any opera house in the world, and his career could have been sensational..." Tebaldi "...Lanza has the finest natural tenor voice I`ve ever heard..." George London..." In my opinion, Lanza, with the possible exception of Bjorling, had the greatest voice of his time... his singing could move people to tears and, in my presence, frequently did. I would venture that if he had not gone to Hollywood he would have had a major operatic career..." Franco Correlli "...Mario Lanza`s singing was both convincing and full of heart..." Maria Callas..."My biggest regret is not having had the opportunity to sing with the greatest tenor voice I`ve ever heard..." And finally, conductor Richard Bonynge, with Joan Sutherland, speaking of attending Lanza`s first Albert Hall concert in London in 1957...." We were both surprised by the size of the voice - we were also impressed by Lanza`s innate musicality. No doubt he could have had an outstanding operatic career..."

      @@toff358 I have never mentioned anything related to the voice and quality of his singing. I just said that he was not an opera singer. Which I sustain. Opera is not only singing, it is performance and interpretation throughout 2 or more hours on stage. Unfortunately the only record of Lanza we have, are recitals and movie clips. In my opinion, that's not enough to say that he was an opera singer. Anyway I understand and respect your position.

    • @toff358
      @toff358 3 роки тому +1

      @@rb020969 You also said "In fact he never sang a complete opera on stage in his entire life." That is demonstrably incorrect and I corrected you. We do in fact have some written "record" of critical reaction - that of critical reaction to his performances with the New Orleans Opera company, which are uniformly highly flattering, although of course 'Madama Butterfly' is Butterfly`s opera, not Pinkerton`s. No opera singer is ever on stage continuously and relentlessly "throughout two or more hours" - as with actors in the theatre, and depending on the opera, they typically spend some time off stage in the wings before being required to go on stage once more. Lanza trained assiduously as an opera singer with the distinguished coaches I`ve mentioned. He performed on the operatic stage, albeit sadly all too infrequently and briefly (mostly his own fault), his concerts from first to last always included a large component of arias, as of course did his films and studio recordings. He was then, surely by any non opera snob definition, an opera singer.

    • @toff358
      @toff358 8 років тому +4

      +Simon Bam He in fact had several "proper" highly reputed vocal coaches, including retired soprano Irene Williams, noted repetiteur Leila Edwards who coached him for his operatic debut as Pinkerton with the New Orleans Opera Company in 1947 (& who later mentioned the speed with which he learned the role) his great baritone friend and mentor Robert Weede, Enrico Rosati who had taught Gigli, and Giacomo Spadoni, one of Caruso`s coaches. In the last period of his life, in Italy, he worked in tandem with two outstanding coaches, Annibale Bizzelli and Franco Zauli who was a coach with the Rome Opera House. The question then is rather - imagine what he could have done had he not allowed himself to become entangled in the deadly Hollywood machinery that deprived him for several years of the vital underpinning of constant coaching, and that so utterly undermined his self confidence and already fragile psyche... My own belief is that it would otherwise have been one of the great operatic tenor careers of the 1950`s/60`s.
