If one didnt know that Freddie was gay they really need to check their 'Gay-Dar' - Same as George Michael - seriously - the thing is. it should never be a thing - Freddie was a Queen he knew how to put on a show and he can never be matched - god rest his soul

Cherry McGregor that was that he had aids, not that he was gay, you need to go back and listen to his live shows, he drops loads of hints he’s gay.
Nobody took any notice as they were to wrapped up in their music and his performance.

The Brits, Aussies and Europeans are very theatrical...we have a different sense of humor to most Americans.
It's called in slang " taking the piss ", or having a joke.
It was actually Roger Taylor's idea to dress in drag for a laugh..
It was and is a great song..

Absolutely...even Shakespeare wrote “As You Like It”...where Rosalind dressed up as a man..we don’t see any thing weird about it..it was the U.S. that had a problem with it...that puritanical streak runs deep there...but the land of the open carry has no problem with gun ownership...a very strange attitude...give me cross dressing any day rather than walking around carrying guns🤩

The thing is that dressing in drag for entertainment, particularly comedy, was pretty mainstream then and continues to be in Britain to this day. This may have been controversial in the US but everyone in the UK was entirely on board with the joke.

I lived for new Queen songs and videos being released. I was 13 in 1984 and laughed my ass off to at Freddie and the guys. I totally "got" their sense of humour and couldn't understand why this video was banned in US. It was fun, carefree but with a serious undertone. Freddie never admitted publically his sexuality and left everyone guessing his entire career. His attitude was " I'm an entertainer and that's all you really need to know" God I miss him 😭😭

US is by no means a prudish society, though with so many different cultures, religions etc, the Media brain trust's decision to censor certain topics on public television does little in a country that at this time had hundreds of TV channels
That being said, I recall , a time when listening to ROCK and Roll , most of Europe and Britrain were cut off, and was only achieved by an off shore pirate radio station, so,,, sensorship is pretty weak in these here parts.

While the televangelists are shouting god wants you to send money to the evangelists? So stop sinning? While the televangelists sin with greed? Our society is confused. Tactically so.

  • @tsukigalleta
    @tsukigalleta 5 років тому +87

This is a Deaky's song (John Deacon, the bass player) about how sick he was of the endless time he had to spend working. He's a very family man and wanted to spend more time with his wife and children.
Freddie was gonna shave his moustache (he did it in the ballet part), but they all said it was funnier if he kept it.
About your question, I would have no problem to dress as a woman for a music video, mostly because I kind of am one :P Did you assume all of your followers are men? LOL!
I've played male characters too, so obviously I'm fine with it. You men live under this terrible pressure to "act manly" 24/7, which believe it or not has to do with women being considered less than men (and therefore humiliating for a man to have the slightest feminine trait).
What I enjoy the most about this video is how much fun the 4 of them had recording it. They said it was between their favorite videos along with Radio Ga Ga.

They had a sense of humor. British humor seldom equates with that in the US. I find Brits much funnier. They can be dry wits, punsters, outlandish, make fun of themselves....run the whole gamut! The Coronation Street reference would fall flat in the US.

Another great reaction. they took the dressing in drag approach also because dressing in drag was considered a highly popular form of British comedy, but MTV didn't get the joke and banned it and it even caused the band's popularity in America to dramatically drop. It only got worse after they released their album hot space which many today consider to be their weakest one. all the more reason why live aid was such a massive comeback for them.

It wasn't just this video that caused their reduction of visibility in the US. Radio stations were nervous of Freddie's look, the Castro Clone, because of it's ties to gay culture. Add in that with Queen's concerts in South Africa, which was a no-no due to the UN ban due to the practice of Apartheid in that country.

I've done it without anyone filming even if there are pics of that, so yes, I don't have any problem with it at all or with someone documenting the occasion. I mean, a lot of artists have done it, the one I recall off-hand being Eminem in one of his music vids. Guess MTV got over it by the time the 90s rolled around.

On the contrary, they all found it very amusing and original. Even my grandma who was born in 1928.

I wouldn't have a problem dressing in drag. I did in fact, over Halloween and the movie premier. I'm a woman who dressed like Freddie dressed as the woman in this video.
British humor has long had men dress in drag for comedy. See: Monty Python, Benny Hill, Dr. Who, The Mighty Boosh, The Goodies, etc...)
So it's no big deal in the UK.
Americans were so uptight about this video that MTV banned it, all but destroying Queen's career in the States. Americans are so weird about sexuality.
But look at those that are in elected offices that are flat out sexual perverse, if not pedophiles. How dare those people try to cast shadows on others!
*I'm an American, btw. I don't understand why some people are so judgemental about silly things.

To the question you posed. They were all brave to do it. Look how good of actors they were. Roger sold his female impression. Brian and John, subtle, but infused.

@@brainsareus That's not my point. They didn't need the US market to live comfortably. I'm in the US. I never shied away from stating how much I liked them. There is a stigmatism, ironically, in the Christian circles. Since Christians and catholics, and jewish people, and muslims all wear dresses to show faith. The irony is strong about their followers disregarding others flamboyance. And we come full circle again. Religion doesn't like competition for their revenue. They are the ones that want to stick out in a crowd. I had a cousin play queens princes of the universe theme song from the highlander tv show. He thought he was a preacher in his teens. I enlighteed him to the fact freddie was gay. Bi-sexual. I never heard him play his music any more. So, when I say brave, that's what I mean. Being free with who you are scares everybody else. Again, another full circle moment. Animals are all about survival. Having a leg up on other animals is equivalent to power to an animal. Seeing another animal live so free, scares the animals who realize they aren't as free, so therefore, they may be in danger of not being as strong in survival as they thought. Their animal fears come out. And the tribalism. And the associated hate, and unintelligible anger also come out. Yes, they were brave.

Have u heard/reacted to Freddie Mercury and Montserrat Caballé yet? She’s (was. R. I. P. Montserrat Caballé) an opera star and he, of course, frontman for Queen. The song is Barcelona. Freddie wrote it (as he did MOST Queen songs). It was written specifically for the two to sing together at the Barcelona Olympics in 1992. Have at it. I’m certain ur gonna love it. He shows, once again, the absolute beauty of his voice and his range, tho sick.

YES!! It's fun, it doesn't mean anything about anyone's sexuality. It was ridiculous that the U.S. was too prudish to play this. Glad I'm from Canada. And...it's much funnier with the mustache. Can't believe it didn't make you crack a smile!

He announced his death from aids and he kept it a secret until 1 day before he died but there were lot's of people who suspected it which is soo sad because he has the most amazing voice!! Try watching Adam Lambert and the queen band are touring and it's pretty amazing with Adam but no one can top Freddie ever!!

They did it to support their boy - Freddy... to support a member of my team, because he was the target of prejudice - I have done it, and will do it again if necesarry. For family and my team (the people I share my life with), yes - support them all the way. If that's their thing, I'll share the experiance with them and support it.

So much you've yet to see from Queen, be it really early stuff like Keep Yourself Alive, The March Of The Black Queen or Seven Seas Of Rhye, to late 70s/early 80s era such as Crazy Little Thing Called Love, Sheer Heart Attack, Don't Stop Me Now, Fat Bottomed Girls (in 1978 just before hip-hop even went mainstream, Queen talked about fat booty first lol!),Hammer To Fall and Is This the World We Created.
Then of course they moved on in the mid 80s with the A Kind Of Magic album, most of which is pretty much the soundtrack to the film 'The Highlander' along with Hammer To Fall, Princes Of The Universe, Who Wants To Live Forever and the titular track A Kind Of Magic come highly recommended.
The last two albums before Freddie died (The Miracle and Innuendo) had some awesome tracks such as Breakthru, The Miracle, I Want It All, The Invisible Man, Scandal, Innuendo (which you already covered), Headlong, I'm Going Slightly Mad, These Are The Days Of Our Lives and The Show Must Go On (again, you covered that).
I highly recommend that you delve into the majority of their back catalogue up to Innuendo before even trying any of the tracks from the posthumous album Made In Heaven, that way you can truly appreciate said album.
