The thing is that dressing in drag for entertainment, particularly comedy, was pretty mainstream then and continues to be in Britain to this day. This may have been controversial in the US but everyone in the UK was entirely on board with the joke.

I lived for new Queen songs and videos being released. I was 13 in 1984 and laughed my ass off to at Freddie and the guys. I totally "got" their sense of humour and couldn't understand why this video was banned in US. It was fun, carefree but with a serious undertone. Freddie never admitted publically his sexuality and left everyone guessing his entire career. His attitude was " I'm an entertainer and that's all you really need to know" God I miss him 😭😭

US is by no means a prudish society, though with so many different cultures, religions etc, the Media brain trust's decision to censor certain topics on public television does little in a country that at this time had hundreds of TV channels
That being said, I recall , a time when listening to ROCK and Roll , most of Europe and Britrain were cut off, and was only achieved by an off shore pirate radio station, so,,, sensorship is pretty weak in these here parts.

This is a Deaky's song (John Deacon, the bass player) about how sick he was of the endless time he had to spend working. He's a very family man and wanted to spend more time with his wife and children.
Freddie was gonna shave his moustache (he did it in the ballet part), but they all said it was funnier if he kept it.
About your question, I would have no problem to dress as a woman for a music video, mostly because I kind of am one :P Did you assume all of your followers are men? LOL!
I've played male characters too, so obviously I'm fine with it. You men live under this terrible pressure to "act manly" 24/7, which believe it or not has to do with women being considered less than men (and therefore humiliating for a man to have the slightest feminine trait).
What I enjoy the most about this video is how much fun the 4 of them had recording it. They said it was between their favorite videos along with Radio Ga Ga.

Look at Jack Lemmon and Tony Curtis, one of their most popular movies together was Some Like It Hot. @@Chinachik I agree it was stupid, but the examples you gave weren't relevant in context to Queen's general 'persona'/image BEFORE this, on top of America's burgeoning and repressive political climate at the time this vid came out....you forgot ''Boy George'' BTW, but MTV and many Americans '''accepted'' Boy George because Boy George was Boy George from the git go, if that makes sense ...Imagine Americans being taken aback a bit if our Rock Icons, Elvis Presley or Chuck Berry came out on Television appearances dressed in drag like this in the 50's/60's even if it was satire, or whatever. I can elaborate a bit, and we don't know if you're American or not because you may understand this a bit better if you are, as in Europe and elsewhere this vid wasn't nearly as controversial, and the song itself was a much bigger hit Worldwide than it was in the States anyway. However the biggest injustice Queen faced with MTV, at the time a hugely influential Music Network, was that MTV not only banned this vid, but from that time on, they banned airing every other music vid Queen made afterwards! THAT'S the real '''stupid'' part, that MTV threw out the baby with the bathwater with Queen in the 1980's, as Americans were totally deprived of watching watching music vids of ''One Vision'', ''Princes Of The Universe'', etc. etc. on MTV. Those vids never aired on MTV, I know; as I was a regular viewer of that channel back in the day...and in the pre-internet era we had no access to watch Queen's music vids at all until they were finally released on video YEARS later.

Hence we have a history up to day with pantomine dames being played by men. widow twankey in alladdin, or the ugly sisters in cindarella for example. they are class as satire or charcature of particular types. Remember Shakespere had no women actors in his time either. every winter 1000s of kids go to watch panto and it is a cultral history that is twice as old as the united states itself, as it dates back to medievel times.

Men dressing in drag also has been a tradition in the US for a very long time., so I don't understand the controversy. I graduated from high school in Minnesota in 1954. (Yes, I'm that old.) At every class reunion I attended, we had two or three of our football stars dressed in drag & lip-syncing to an Andrews Sisters song. It was hilariously funny, & enjoyed by all. Maybe it has something to do with MN sharing a border with Canada. My son, keeper of family photos tells me he has a pic of my totally he-man father in drag, for some sort of skit. I don't remember that, but do have one of him dressed in a barrel.
I think some of the ones who objected to the Queen video might have been southerners. North & south have traditionally been so culturally divided that they might as well be two different countries. This is not meant as a blanket statement. & realize that we also have much in common with each other, but when I lived briefly in Texas, I did experience a bit of culture shock.

MTV banned this video but the Queen fans here gave MTV so much grief that they had no choice but to put it back on their video playlist after the controversy cooled down a little. All the Queen fans got it and laughed their collective asses off! The Queen fans already knew about Freddie and realized the video was a young in cheek presentation. Another great song from that album, The Works, is an album cut called Machines (or Back To Humans). On a different subject, please don't do Southern Rock. If I hear the song Sweet Home Alabama one more time, I may loose my mind. You see, I live in Alabama and you would not believe how many times I've heard that and other southern rock songs since the 70's when they first came out! Try another song and group instead such as Dear Diary/The Moody Blues or Follow Your Bliss by the B-52's. Great Stuff!

the best thing i remember reading about this video was that they expected freddie to dance with the royal ballet, found out he couldnt really dance, so they just carted him about like that in the video! lmao i'd say the cow ballet is even more hilarious than the drag which has had a long standing tradition in in british culture, anyway. dunno what the fuss is about wearing clothes of the opposite gender. women wear jeans and other 'masculine' type clothing but for men to wear women's clothing is somehow demeaning. toxic masculinity, what can i say? everyone should feel free to wear dresses/skirts if they want, it's very refreshing :)

I wouldn't have a problem dressing in drag. I did in fact, over Halloween and the movie premier. I'm a woman who dressed like Freddie dressed as the woman in this video.
British humor has long had men dress in drag for comedy. See: Monty Python, Benny Hill, Dr. Who, The Mighty Boosh, The Goodies, etc...)
So it's no big deal in the UK.
Americans were so uptight about this video that MTV banned it, all but destroying Queen's career in the States. Americans are so weird about sexuality.
But look at those that are in elected offices that are flat out sexual perverse, if not pedophiles. How dare those people try to cast shadows on others!
*I'm an American, btw. I don't understand why some people are so judgemental about silly things.

If it is fun and has some purpose, why not? It is true US is a bit different from our "decadent" Europe in this. Nobody...literaly NOBODY I know has ever had a single problem with the video. To answer your question about dressing up like a woman for a music video, I absolutely would! I've done it without anyone filming even if there are pics of that, so yes, I don't have any problem with it at all or with someone documenting the occasion. I mean, a lot of artists have done it, the one I recall off-hand being Eminem in one of his music vids. Guess MTV got over it by the time the 90s rolled around.

Not only America MTV banned the video because they didn't catch the joke behind it, but all the radios refused to broadcast the song, and their intention was to do so for at least seven years. Queen have always said they lost America for that reason, while at the time Freddie declares that Queen would no longer perform in the United States. Unfortunately he didn't have the time or the opportunity to change his mind. That's what the controversy was all about.

Freddie was actually bisexual and married long time friend, Mary Austin. They truly loved each other and she understood his sexuality and didn’t judge him, as so many, I’m sure, did. Questions always surrounded him about his sexuality and I don’t believe he EVER said one way or another. We figured it out. It wasn’t difficult. I, for one, never cared WHO TF he loved, as long as he kept gracing us with his velvet voice. 😀 R.I.P. Freddie Mercury. RIP.

It's not a mock of corrie, is a take on George orwells 1984, and they fell on the idea off corrie for the video to anchor the 'tradition' rolls of people and how they do as they are told.
