Looks so much better with the LED tail-lights, can't believe they're not standard in the US!
wish they did a little more to the front and interior to make it seem more special the front dont look that much more aggressive or sporty than a standard golf

what did you mean by "permanent 4-wheel drive"? i thought the golf R is only fwd mainly and rear come on when slip is sensed..
So pretty much my stage 1 APR tuned 2015 Audi A3 has incredibly similar performance number, probably same transmission, probably same AWD architecture, similar interior quality, same chassis.... And it's essentially a similar price at the end of the day.... I'm happy with the looks of my car and the badge, but I'd love the hatch, and a manual... Things to think about.

AutoGuide.com Wasn't that bad, some people are just a bit dramatic. It was far from "awful"... In fact the video production was excellent, it's just the video quality on the panning had a chop effect to it. I'm sure it's easily remedied.
I like everything... Except the price. $40k. Ouch. Homeboy compares it to an Impreza WRX STi, and it doesn't sound horrible then. But what else can be had for $40k?

Do you guys say 0 - 60 miles like it is the same as 0 - 100 km or something when it should be 0 - 62? It is 0 - 100 4.9 secs with DSG. In fact I wouldn't be surprised if it does in in 4.7.
Money no object I'd probably go with the S3 because despite what's said here on this video the interior and seating is better in the Audi but that said the Golf is nice for sure and miles better than a WRX

The Focus RS probably wasn't included because we don't know enough about it, but I'd have AT LEAST mentioned what we do know, like that it will probably blow this car off the road. I like the Golf R at least as much in terms of sophistication and layout and I don't need the "20-something" looks of the RS or the STI. That said, I like those looks enough.

You probably should've mentioned the upcoming Focus RS as a competitor as well, since we now know it's also going to be stateside and in this price range. I think the 2 have many resemblances(even more than the WRX) and kinda like 'em both. They just look very fun. I'm not looking for AUDI quality for any hot hatch. If it has that much quality, all the better. That said, these cars are very expensive for their size and performance level.
Not even man. Ford mentioned the RS is going to be a complete 4WD. Unlike the Golf R where it's FWD and AWD when needed. The Ford RS is rumored to be in the 300hp+.

The WRX-STI has always been AWD and never a FWD car.
The new Golf R is AWD, the 1st available(in America).
Focus RS is AWD, also the 1st available. It is not 4WD.
The STI gets a 305hp rating..
Golf R gets 292.
Focus RS gets 315+ according to Ford, "well in excess" of 315hp.
STI(and non STI, I believe) models can have a "LinearTronic" transmission, which takes the car from 50/50 to "rear bias" AWD... and it's manually adjustable in STI form.
Just listen to the audio from 1:40 to 2:00 and you'll hear that the GOLF R also has it's own version of bias, not to mention "permanent AWD."
Focus RS gets an automatic unit w/ up to 70% rear bias. It is (shamefully) NOT available w/ an automatic.

Wouldn't the RS weigh less than the two? Either way, I'd pick the RS or STi over the Golf R disregarding the performance, mainly appearance wise. It suits the "sport look." The Golf R looks nice nonetheless.

I'd take the R because I'm older now... way older now... and not only am done w/ manual transmissions and the boyish looks, but need an auto due to an old injury. There's NOTHING wrong w/ the other 2 and if I were looking for the performance along, I'd take either of them over this R.
You didn't say the STI was FWD... I was making is the connection. They should've included the RS because it's very much in that category. I was linking the 3 where the story only linked 2. Plus, since you pointed out the FWD of the Golf R and the RS was AWD, I pointed out the STI is also AWD rather than front.
In defense of the RS not being included: We don't know enough about it, like price, actual power/torque, actual tires and wheel size, suspension information, the type of seats, etc. So from that standpoint, I get leaving it out. I'd have mentioned it though, since we know it's coming.
That's understandable. I would get an auto as well if it were for an injury. They should have definitely included the STi now that you showed me that it's permanent AWD now. Makes me like the R even more than before. Meh I don't mind the boyish look. Probably because I trash my S2000 a lot and I don't really care about the looks. It's just such a good track and daily.
no you don't like manual "more than the next person". For us the true "save the manuals" crew, it does not matter how good the auto box is. You just like to shift and control the clutch yourself. And one more thing - is this really a "permanent" awd system? Meaning, it's not a Haldex? Strongly doubt it. Otherwise decent review.

Focus...focus....focus. I heard it. I contemplated getting it, but in the end I took a bite of the Golf R MT. AND it BITES BACK. say what you will, think what you may, unless you've driven it - it's all talk. The ride is the smoothest and most forceful ride I've ever experienced. It reminds me of the Gen 2 GTI. This is a new plateau for VW. Focus...focus...focus....focus on pure driving pleasure. I did.

A permanent all wheel drive system? Riiiight.
Latest generation of 4-Motion (Haldex) is in fact permanently driving all four wheels. 95% front, 5% rear.
kallee Hence it's NOT permanent all wheel drive. In real day driving it's almost all power to the front wheels and only shifting power to the rear wheels during violent off the mark acceleration or in case of slippy conditions. It's not a bad system, don't get me wrong, but it's not a "quattro" type of system as suggested in the video, like in the bigger Audis (A4 and above). The XDS system cannot compete the with GTI's mechanical differential, which will send all power (if necessary) to the outer loaded wheel. The XDS just sips energy by braking and on a track the brakes will overheat in no time...

Didn't know that, I stand corrected. Anyhow it is still not like a "real" AWD such as Torsen type Quattros or the ones in Evos and Subies have. But it's permanent alright. (And I'm not saying that haldex is bad, not at all. I'm driving one myself at the moment.)

Great advertisement of the DSG gearbox and its never ending merits over a dinosaur operated manual. So when are the autonomous cars that can drive better than humans and lap a circuit faster than a human coming ?
Audi made the rs7 autonomous and took it to the track and it was just as fast as a human (or faster, not quite sure)
with only FEW thousands of dollars less , the GTi is OverPriced , not this one

I got a headache watching this.....with all the shuddering !!!
Three years ago when I saw the Golf R at the New York Auto Show the salesperson warned me then that I just wasn't cool enough to own a Golf R because they would only make a couple of hundred of these and NOT sell me one because they were for "special" people. Whoopee Doo.So when the new 2015 Golf R was heavily advertised as a regular production item I put down a deposit and ordered one to see what they would pull this time.It has been many months and now the dealer says "No Car Available."What a joke. I'm picking up up my deposit tomorrow. I just wanted to see if they were REALLY selling these or just using them to get people into their stupid showrooms and switch them to other models.They spent three months trying to switch me. Clowns.I used to respect VW but between this joke and the fact they have been caught using crooked pollution controls on their diesels who cares about this company any more?I hope Germany has work for all their VW employees and all their new Syrian refugees. Good luck my little frauleins...
I wish #VW hired some designers to make more exciting, modern-looking exterior and interior. It doesn't look much different from 90s Golf.
Some reviewers say that you have to see them in person to appreciate the difference; that in person they are strikingly beautiful, but that in pictures it does not come across.
David Winston Well. I saw them in person too. Nothing interesting. I admit though that their interior has good materials, but too bland design.
But for me, It is very beautiful and it has the styling cues borrowed from the Golf from the 90s.
Nima Bahrehdar How is this bland? If you want a million buttons and useless interior features like endless trim, get a ford or a nissan. This is a very beautiful car. I never could understand why everyone says these are boring. What does that even mean? This has EVERYTHING you need in a badass car. I mean, seriously. Every other car I've seen just has useless features and extra buttons and knobs, its just stupid to have a million buttons to do one thing.

TigR 5hark I like how this design doesn't make it seem like you're compensating for something. The flashiness of the STI & RS, and the "prestigious" Audi & Merc badges are so unnecessary.
Just the way I like it ! Lol only it can also hit 0-60 in 4.8 sec haha
That interior looks so bland... sorry but I'm not buying the shiny black plastics.
