  • Bison nearly went extinct at the end of the 19th century. However, they returned to Grasslands National Park in December 2005.
Bison are recognized as ecological engineers. Indeed many species at risk benefit from the presence of the bison which are essential to the health of the mixed-grass prairie ecosystem.

An Icon that helped build a nation; at an unfortunate cost. Imagine if our continents herds were not decimated. Our wildlife management would be much different and they would have many thriving species (flora and fauna) along side them.

Yes those 1800s fools deprived future generations of ever seeing such a spectacular sight.

The bison didn’t just “go extinct”, as though they wandered into a hole. I wonder why the park is shy about stating the important point about why they went extinct and what that meant for the bison, the land, and indigenous peoples.

Thank you Pamela. We have a few bison-related videos on our channel. Here's one that addresses some of the history ua-cam.com/video/OtF9QBQGMt4/v-deo.html
