  • Spanish: a living language. Report 2023. Spanish in the world. Instituto Cervantes Yearbook.
    Spanish in figures.
In 2023, almost 500 million people will have Spanish as their mother tongue (6.2% of the world's population).
The group of potential users of Spanish in the world (a figure that includes the Native Proficiency Group, the Limited Proficiency Group and the Group of Foreign Language Learners) exceeds 599 million (7.5% of the world's population).
Spanish is the world's second mother tongue by number of speakers, after Mandarin Chinese, and the fourth language in a global computation of speakers (native proficiency + limited proficiency + learners of Spanish), after English, Mandarin Chinese and Hindi.
The number of Spanish speakers will continue to grow over the next five decades, but their relative weight will gradually decrease by the end of the century. In 2100, only 6.4% of the world's population will be able to communicate in Spanish.
In 2060, the United States will be the second largest Spanish-speaking country in the world, after Mexico. 27.5% of the US population will be of Hispanic origin.
More than 23 million students will be studying Spanish as a foreign language in 2023. Specifically, 23,035,198.
