We've lost two species in the fans, both of which are very slim and can get through the protective grid. Both species are common here and one of them (Texas Ribbonsnake) reproduce in the greenhouses since they are livebearers. Yes, we seem to have an established breeding population and have seen several juvenile Indigoes. Charles
Here in Australia, Peacock Chilid's are basically termed as a Mixed breed & generally rubbish to keep in the hobby (Generally very agressive) Could you explain the meaning of "OB Peacock" over there? What does "OB" mean? Thanks for the fantastic video's.
OB originally meant "orange blotch" and was applied to Pseudotropheus species in which some of the blotches were in fact orange. That fish was hybridized with Aulonocara species resulting the ancestors of the many Peacock cichlid strains. OB today has come to mean any blotched pattern. The OB pattern is caused by dominant gene (technically allele). I find the Peacocks, indeed the genus Aulonocara and its close relatives, to be much less aggressive than Pseudotropheus and its relatives. And all the Lake Malawi cichlids are less aggressive than pair-bonding species like the new world Cichlasoma species. The key, I think, to reducing aggression in cichlids is crowding. We keep as many as 120 adult male cichlids in a 55-gallon vat. These is virtually no aggression in those vats since peck orders can't develop. One issue for a hobbyist is that most Lake Malawi cichlids are lek breeders. Male lek breeders establish very small breeding territories along with many other males. The females approach the lek and decide which males they will breed with. Each of those territories usually cover an area larger than most aquaria. So, if you have two males, the dominant one will try to expel the other male from his territory. The other male can't flee, and he is constantly harassed. Adding additional males spreads out the aggression so that a single fish isn't always the pickee. Also, the dominant male will often help the most subordinate male by attacking his closest rival. The more males the less aggression. Crowding also helps any females. Because the breeding territory encompasses the entire aquarium, the male thinks any female in the tank wants to mate. He becomes frustrated and aggressive when she doesn't. If there are lots of males, females aren't harassed as much because the males have to deal with each other. Charles

Most Fish Stores I've been to over the years here call all sorts of Chiclids "Peacocks" & many of them don't have blotching but are clearly a mixed breed. So basically most fish store owner/operators have their information incorrect or skewed. Thanks again for a great answer, Leo.
Wow 10:00 2k gallons per day of cooling, that's $20 per day worth of water here. I guess there isn't really any other way to cool 38k gallons of water.
The males for that strain look fake, like soap or something. Those fish would look wild in a tank with a dark background and substrate. Much of the rock occurring in my area is basalt which would fit the bill. I usually dont like super crazy color morphs on animals, but when it comes to cichlids they just make it look really good, same with ball pythons.
There is so much variation in the Peacocks that I could start a new strain almost every day! We don't keep fish in aquaria, so I have to visit tanks that our aquarium maintenance customers set up to get a feel for how they look in tanks. We have so many deer mice these days. I should raise snakes too and trap the mice as food. Charles

Peacock = striking color & OB = spots. I'm no expert though.

That is the cost of living in our climate. Fortunately, we have good wells in an aquifer that continually recharges.
