This song-like the others from Please Please Me & the early 'bootlegs'-later officially released as BBC Anthologies-shows the true JOY in the early music of The Beatles. A thing of Beauty. Thank-You for posting.
I grew up with The Beatles as I was born in 1955. This track is one of my favourites and the video shows how many versions they tried before Lennon's harmonica intro gave it a haunting sound that will last forever. Brilliant music in their early days that went a little wayward from 1967 onwards.
+John Elsmore the white album is by far the rawest material the Beatles ever put out. Sure they didn't work as a whole as much, but you could hear how each Beatle was finding their own path during that time. I thought Abby road was a step in the wrong direction though
+Rush1017 I wouldn't agree that the white album is the rawest but I guess that's all down to the definition of rawness? Up to '67 it was the original Beatles compositions and playing including duff notes and out of key melodies. Also, the original 8 track songs were almost amateurish except the songs were exceptional which made them classics. I guess we have to agree to disagree? BUT, we both enjoy the Beatles so we stay friends? :-)
That's what is so great about the Beatles though! There are fans who like the earlier work, such as yourself, and then there are the ones that like them more towards the end, like me. They just covered so many different sounds and genres, and mastered them all! I just prefer the later stuff because they were able to pursue the sounds they wanted rather than what was cool at the time, although they started down that round around revolver
This was so amazing! To see a Beatles' song worked and reworked, tweaked and checked until it comes out as powerful as possible. The inclusion of the harmonica was a master stroke. Thanks for posting this.
There's a place! I can go! To my Beatles music and just feel alive and vibrant and vivid and so lucky to have lived during their life times and to have seen them in 1966 at Shea. We are all so lucky!
+Tango Eliott I know exactly how you feel. They've been a part of my life since I was 9 and now I'm 60. Thank God for the Beatles and how lucky we were. I did not see the Beatles, but have settled for seeing Paul McCartney several times.
Ringo in the studio! All those takes and he's rock steady. Just a bit of the legendary session 12+ hour session 11 February 1963. Recorded 10 songs in one session. Plenty of guitar goofs. They had to love the Ringo. Thanks for posting!!
I envy you. I'd do anything to have my teenage years with The Beatles. now I'm a teenager stuck in this generation with Justin Bieber and other garbage.
Carson Runyon : You're NOT stuck anywhere, Carson. There's a Place YOU can go and enjoy the music YOU like...And the Place is YOUR Mind ! ;) PEACE & LOVE !
I was 12 in 1964 when I bought "Twist and Shout. " I must have played that record 100 times before I flipped it over and listened to "There's a Place." It's the first time I remember listening to music that made me think instead of wanting to get up and dance.
From their very first record there was something different about them, something you had never heard before: There is a place where I can go . . . and it's my MIND. It snapped your head around when you first heard it!
Masterpiece, yes, but most of the evolution is from take ten to eleven, when the harmonica replaces the guitar intro. The vocals, including the amazing unlike-any-precedent harmonies, were nailed every time from the start.
Beatles forever
I love the last line. 'There's a place'. It's like saying : There's hope, there's that place where you can go : your mind. Very lennonesque, indeed. Not such a cynic after all. The Beatles had that thing about them. Hope, joy.
totally true. That is exactly what I supposed they wanted to tell us thru this song, when there is no hope around you, you can look within you, a quiet and comfortable place to go ...Regards from Argentina!,
This song is very important because it shows how the beatles could write serious stuff that wasn't just about girls and love. I mean, it was about both things, but it's very advanced. It's more than a simple love song.
I love this song and its awesome to hear how it evolved in the studio.I wish i could know who thought of adding the harmonica, it was simplistic perfection like so much of there music.
Cynthia Lennon once said that in the early days, before John Lennon and Paul McCartney became famous, she would listen to John and Paul sing harmony and the hair would stand up on the back of her neck. Now I know what she meant.
This song is so eccentric: Which voice is the melody and which the harmony? It start's w Lennon's harmony beneath McC's higher melody; but, then it almost seems to switch the melody to John's lower register, w the harmony above. Btw, harmonizing beneath the higher melody is a great sound-you hear it in Cuban music, but it was not heard often in pop/rock music-yet another of the dozens of distinctions the Beatles brought to us all 50+ yrs ago!
So The Beatles sing "There's A Place where I can go when feel low when I feel blue....and it's my mind", that is mindblowing, Brian Wilson used that same premise for "In My Room" years later
Actually the only song that George used the DuoJet was Please Please Me (not the album the song), but it was rumoured that the 12 string was suppose to be the Beatles Significance guitar icon.
This has always been one of my favorites. It sounds like around take 10, they recorded the instrumental backing track and then just did the vocal tracks for 10-13. That's why George Martin keeps saying "Track 2, take X". Track 1 being the instrument track. Very interesting to me.
I think he played octave notes on a regular Gretsch six string. The 12 string came along after they returned from the Ed Sullivan Show. I think "You Can't Do That" was the first song they used it on.
Where'd do people get this stuff. Was there a break in at Abbey Rd. I love it anyway even if it might be the Ruttles. Love this song.Think I'll have it at my funeral
At the picture of the album "please, please me", we see john, then george, paul, and ringo . I think it's no a coincidence that john died first and georgr after him.
yes, i definitely hear the similarity. also listen to the la's "there she goes," the part where they sing "she calls my name" - - the melody is very much like "there's a place."
Take ten was the best but did you notice that the guitar in the takes prior to that is out of tune? It was just enough that it was really ruining it. Glad they finally caught it. Was that George playing?

+John Elsmore What?? 1967-68 were the best years for the Beatles! Maybe not relationship wise, but the music is amazing
What back??? 67 onwards were the declining years for the group. The rawness had vanished and was replaced by drug influenced meandering tunes.
+John Elsmore the white album is by far the rawest material the Beatles ever put out. Sure they didn't work as a whole as much, but you could hear how each Beatle was finding their own path during that time. I thought Abby road was a step in the wrong direction though

You were at the Shea Concert?
You 're really Lucky !!!
huskyjerk .
Yes at the one in 1966 not 1965
+Tango Eliott Awesome to have witnessed Shea
+Tango Eliott I know exactly how you feel. They've been a part of my life since I was 9 and now I'm 60. Thank God for the Beatles and how lucky we were. I did not see the Beatles, but have settled for seeing Paul McCartney several times.
Excellent video, I really wanna know the evolution of this precious song. Thank you. :)
People understand now the amount of patients and time took to create a master take. For me every take was amazing to listen to.

Being born in 1951 ( Aussie) I in my teenage years Beatles music was part of me, It still is..
Carson Runyon You may like Gabrielle Aplin's cover of this...it's really beautiful.
Goose Bumps......what clarity.... i have entered Beatle heaven again !!! Thanks

Rest In Peace😢
Thanks for uploading this. 16:00 Adding the harmonica made a big difference. Interesting.
My favorite song of the Beatles.
+Adi Hadzikadic Agree. Simple BUT so deep when you listen to it
Love this one! Man, Ringo sounds so great on these early tunes! He had only just joined the band....
From their very first record there was something different about them, something you had never heard before: There is a place where I can go . . . and it's my MIND. It snapped your head around when you first heard it!
The evolution of a masterpiece
Masterpiece, yes, but most of the evolution is from take ten to eleven, when the harmonica replaces the guitar intro. The vocals, including the amazing unlike-any-precedent harmonies, were nailed every time from the start.
Paul's high harmonies: from heaven.

Such great drumming, especially the rolls at the end.
beautiful words and singing
I love the last line. 'There's a place'. It's like saying : There's hope, there's that place where you can go : your mind. Very lennonesque, indeed. Not such a cynic after all. The Beatles had that thing about them. Hope, joy.

Que harmonias!!! Por la cresta....
WHOA! what a gem, love it!
Those voices. I hear the those voices without any sound around. They fill all the space in the ears. Where is that place?
Awesome mix...!!
for those asking about the 'place' they clearly say it. "theres a place where i can go, when i feel low, when i feel blue and its my miiiiiiiiind"
I love this song and its awesome to hear how it evolved in the studio.I wish i could know who thought of adding the harmonica, it was simplistic perfection like so much of there music.
I always love the beatles takes!
Cynthia Lennon once said that in the early days, before John Lennon and Paul McCartney became famous, she would listen to John and Paul sing harmony and the hair would stand up on the back of her neck. Now I know what she meant.
That was brilliant thank you!

I can think of a few examples back then. One such examples is the Everly's song "Cathy's Clown", which Please Please Me is based on.
All these takes are great to hear but, IMHO TAKE 11 is the one! The harmonica makes the song.
This was the start of the 10 hour album session - 10 songs record in 10 hours. - it was a song they regularly sang at their concerts.
What a great one...
So The Beatles sing "There's A Place where I can go when feel low when I feel blue....and it's my mind", that is mindblowing, Brian Wilson used that same premise for "In My Room" years later
Wilson goes to his room, like any cry baby kid. Lennon goes to his Mind. Like a thinking grown-up. 'It's my mind, and there's not time'.
The . Effing. Greatest.
+Gregory L'Esperance Totally agree. There have been several covers but the original is still the best
LA MEJOR CANCION !!
Actually the only song that George used the DuoJet was Please Please Me (not the album the song), but it was rumoured that the 12 string was suppose to be the Beatles Significance guitar icon.
Interesting song

I always wish I could be born John Lennon..except I don't get shot...he's coolest guy ever...he created the Beatles n my great gran even knew him
I think he played octave notes on a regular Gretsch six string. The 12 string came along after they returned from the Ed Sullivan Show. I think "You Can't Do That" was the first song they used it on.
take 10 is the master track
Take 8 was very good,take 9 was quick,10 John stronger,11-strong faded,12 too much echo,13-Welcome George...da final finish is Great!
LETS HERE IT FOR PAUL1772 ! ................................................. WELL DONE LAD.
wonderful , thanks , hare krsna :-)
Where'd do people get this stuff. Was there a break in at Abbey Rd.
I love it anyway even if it might be the Ruttles.
Love this song.Think I'll have it at my funeral
Tango I agree. we are lucky.
At the picture of the album "please, please me", we see john, then george, paul, and ringo . I think it's no a coincidence that john died first and georgr after him.
John talking about himself for the first time.
AAAHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
One more thing. Anyone listen to Smashing Pumpkins "1979" and hear similarities with "There's a Place?" Take a listen.
yes, i definitely hear the similarity. also listen to the la's "there she goes," the part where they sing "she calls my name" - - the melody is very much like "there's a place."
i thought i was the only one who share the same feelings about them songs
it sure did caught up with the same fever as with the beatles. .. :)
Do The Beatles have small heads or does Little Richard have a big head?
omg its in stereo....i wish paul's voice is in the center and john's voice is in the right channel
I JUST CAN'T "TAKE" IT ANYMORE ! ............................ O'K' SO I LIED !
Did George use a 12 string guitar at that time?
Where does this stuff come from?
Take ten was the best but did you notice that the guitar in the takes prior to that is out of tune? It was just enough that it was really ruining it. Glad they finally caught it. Was that George playing?
***** from what ive read I believe they used 432hz for a lot of there recordings i usually always do that myself when playing beatles songs on guitar
John's voice is so great! This is the best song of them.
icansiung\
Oh gear fab!! You make me sweat.
4:27 did someone cough or sneeze? Haha!
Carson Runyon supposedly its george coughing
この曲もブロックしないで下さい。
I KNOW "THERE'S A PLACE" BUT WHERE THE HELL IS IT ?
"And it's my mind..."

The Applesauce Project @*
I think the "place" is just off to the left there...hang on.....yeah! There it is, finally! My mind...freakin' finally found it after 55 years!
I have a guitar, and I know how to play it. :)
