  • So today I decided to go to Martin mere wetland center in Ormskirk in Lancashire to catch up on the local wildlife as it had been several months since I had last visited this reserve.
Unfortunately little did I know I was going to be in for a rough day, with very little wildlife around and what there was, was very thin on the ground and hard to find, with this being my first summer of wildlife photography it's all a big learning curve so obviously this is something I'm going to have to take into account next year and come up with other plans and areas to photograph the wildlife.
Finding locations I can see is going to be a long process over a number of years, which is fine I am prepared for that and happy to wait and take my time unlearning this new skill and craft.
Anyway, it turned out to be a great day at the end photographing the kingfishers coming in and catching some fish and a little squirrel coming up and having a drink over the edge of a log so not a bad day a wildlife photography and exploration.

Hi Ashley, lovely as always! Not sure what the little bird is? Always lovely to see kingfishers and kestrels though! Never get bored of those ever!! The names of your butterflies need to be the other way around though 😊xx

Kingfishers never get boring. The ones in your area are beautiful. Kingfishers in my neck of the woods are black and grey. Not very colorful but still a wonder to observe.

Hi Ashley this time of year as you say can be difficult. What l have done is to concentrate on fast flying birds so i am out Photographing Swifts, Swallows and Hobbies in different locations, Have not got it 100% right yet for a keeper photo but hoping to get there. This way with the other wildlife i find along the way it all add,s to my next u-tube video for better continence. Stay well and thanks again for a great video.

Great vid, Ash. As you say, the height of Summer can mean very lean times for wildlife photography but you pulled out some really good results. Summer is macro season for me, a set of extension tubes & a kit zoom lens, produces some really good images. Also it's as light as it gets to carry on those hot days. A thought for you perhaps! Keep up the great work Ash! 👍

Hi, you have inverted the names of the butterflies around 11.42, oops. Sometimes you can identify a bird putting an image into Google search. Not sure how it works with juveniles though. The biggest problem at many reserves is that the birds are so far away, nice kingfisher shots, pity the distance couldn't be halved. The other day there were some tiny moorhen chicks standing on iris stems at the waters edge, only to see them clearly you had to be across the pond, distance again. What I really would like to see is a silent drone with a 300mm lens on a decent sized sensor!

    Hi Ashley
I think your unknown bird may be a juvenile stonechat

Hi Andy, It was very quiet today, only a few people came in and did not stay long, perhaps many know that it is very quiet on the wildlife front here at the moment so don't bother.
