My thoughts on Alphonse suddenly remembering his encounter with "the truth" was that it was such a traumatic event that his psyche completely repressed it. As speculated earlier by Ed and Izumi, the amount of truth you're shown should be relative to the amount you sacrifice (equivalent exchange), he was shown even more than either of them. And considering he was even younger than Ed at the time it makes sense that everything he went through was completely repressed. I believe that the blood splattering inside of him was another trauma so intense it linked his memories of everything that happened with the transmutation with their mother, and unlocked those memories by proxy. Not anything due to the magic of the world, but purely Al's psychology.

I always thought of it was his seal being rewetted with blood and reopening that connection. But I really enjoy your takeaway too.

    • @cutmyheadoff

I think I'd go even further and say that the blood splattering onto his rune was a "near death" experience, causing his life to flash before his eyes. We already know from earlier that if the rune was scratched away the seal would break, so I've always assumed painting over it with blood would do the same thing.

Also wanted to add to the original replies interpretation.
If you consider that the seal is drawn with blood and the suit of armor also being steel, this likely creates a more significantly stronger seal compared to something that is simply drawn with ink or other mediums. Blood containing iron and likely creating a layer of rust from the iron in the suit resulting in an etched inlay of blood.
Secondly if you consider said seal to be like a circuit that allows the function of bonding the Al's Soul to the suit of armor. Then blood touching the seal may have caused a short-circuiting, with the added psychological trauma of that situation the Original reply has mentioned.

I think it's important to point out that Greed's gang aren't homunculi. Only Greed is a homunculi. The rest are human chimeras. They use to be ordinary people but were experimented and combined with animals. This may seem like semantics but as you learn more it'll be important to keep in mind. The homunculi (Greed, Lust, Envy, Gluttony) have a distinctly different origin.
Edit: So you do know how homunculi are created. Chimera's are combinations of various animals, including humans. Homunculi are pieces of Father's soul given physical form inside a body.

So, for Alphonse getting his memory back. It's not from the blood, it's from the shock of having someone die inside of him. It's a traumatic jolt that brings back his suppressed memories. Izumi talks about it in previous chapters. Very easy to miss since the conversation gets a bit comedic, the anime also completely missed it while adapting as well XD

Also, it's been a while it's been a while since I've read the series, I think the reason why Al's memories returned is purely due to the massive shock he experienced. I won't go more into details regarding the scene as some things miiiight be more spoilery as I'm not sure if they were revealed or you caught on them (or if you would consider it a spolier, even though it's more philosophical).

Im pretty sure many people pointed this out already but there's a big difference between a Chimera and an Homunculus.
A chimera is the result of two separate life forms fused together (most of the chimeras we meet are Human + X, you take a human and fuse it with an animal to implant some of it's characteristics) while an Homunculus is an artificially made living being.
Homunculi were never born, they were created from scratch by taking a piece of Father's soul attached to a Philosopher's Stone and molding a body around that.

FMA is my favorite anime, my favorite manga and is so incredibly close to my heart. ♥ One thing I want to mention just to clarify, Homunculi and Chimera are not one in the same. The "x" in Xiaomei and Xing is basically a "sh" sound. If you want to be extra correct, you say it with the tip of your tongue at your bottom gums. Incidentally, this is the same "sh" sound that's in Japanese. It's fine to just use the English approximation (it's what basically every newsperson does when saying President Xi Jinping's name), but in Mandarin it can cause confusion because there's a different "sh" sound (pronounced with the tongue curled back) that is actually written "sh", hence the unintuitive (to a native English speaker) spelling.
For super extra bonus points, x, q, j, s, c, and z are all pronounced with the tongue tip at the lower gums in Mandarin. Sh, ch, zh, and r are similarly all pronounced with the tongue curled back. Q and ch are "ch" sounds, and j and zh are "hard j" sounds. C and z are basically "ts" and "dz" sounds. All the other consonants are pretty much what you'd expect.
And that's Mandarin consonants in a nutshell! Vowels and tones are a whole other thing, but I'm pretty sure none of the unintuitive vowels show up in this story and nobody cares if foreigners do the tones or not (if anything not even trying is preferred because messing them up is worse), but this is enough to make your pronunciation better than 90% of English speakers.

It is implied that Al might have seen the most out of everyone who has seen the truth because he gave his whole body rather than part of it and he's also the youngest to have seen it, so it makes sense that his mind was overwhelmed, while Ed and Izumi retained some of what they saw.
Also chimeras and homunculi are not the same thing, you seem to be using them interchangeably. Chimeras are hybrid creatures, the homunculi are artificially created humans. Greed isn't the same type of being as his henchmen.

  • @theonlyslagathor
    @theonlyslagathor Рік тому +9

So the reason why Al remembered things after Martel died, was because Al lost his memories because the trauma of losing his body was too much. So Izumi was asking her doctor how to help someone get their memories back and her doctor suggested something shocking. (And then Izumi first thoughts were hitting him super hard )
Martel dying inside Al was supposedly shocking enough that it brought back the memories of that night.

I really think the anime does a great job once the Elrich brothers leave Gracia Hughes’ house. Because they have sound, they don’t show Gracia crying through the window, but just have the boys leave and hear her break down crying through the door, with Elicia asking Mommy to not cry again (sounding on the verge of tears herself). It’s so SAD.

Even with hindsight of the whole series, I'm pretty sure Al getting his Truth memory back in that moment is purely _psychological,_ no alchemy or other magic needed.
It was already established that he had repressed his memory about the Truth, most likely because of how traumatic of an experience it was. Now, with another traumatic experience (someone you can understand isn't fully a bad person getting killed inside of you while you're trying to protect them sounds pretty traumatic for anyone, let alone a 14-year old), that memory came back. Izumi even theorizes something along these lines as a possible solution to the memory loss prior.
The blood may have been just a visual showing of what happened, and how _close_ to Al. Think of the visual of blood splattering across someone's face as someone gets killed in front of them (which wasn't really an option here). If it was of any material significance, that would probably be that this is effectively as close as anyone can get to _touching_ Al, as that blood seal is what's keeping him anchored in the world, and thus could be considered more "him" than anything else physical is at present, though I'd personally still say it was just the symbolical meaning it was supposed to have.
On another note, chimera and homunculi are unrelated. Chimera are fusions of different animals or animals and humans. Homunculi are created by their "Father" using his own soul, not using any animal parts, no relation to chimera. Greed just happened to be a homunculus, leading a gang of chimera. Those guys were a little above the standards of what you'd see in the lab of Shou Tucker for example, which is why they were referred to as more perfected or whatever, but they are still chimera, not homunculi.
Mrs. Hughes is called Gracia! I don't remember if that's been for sure mentioned at this point, but not like it's a spoiler or anything.

My first interaction with Fullmetal Alchemist (Brotherhood) was the anime episode where Winry learns of Scar killing her parents. I had no knowledge of the rest of the series, it was just one episode that aired on Toonami either before/or after the show I was intending to watch. I got to see Scar's PTSD of the blue-eyed soldiers without any context late at night on Cartoon Network. I was really confused and didn't look into the show. At some point a friend recommended the show to me within the next couple years, but I had forgotten about that episode until I found it again during my binge through the series.
The scene definitely held a lot more emotional weight when I had finally understood the characters.

Ed calls their blood "soul data" while trying to ressurect their mom, and now Al's only connection to the world is through the blood seal Ed painted on that armor. So I think that might be why Martel's blood hitting Al's seal awakened something. They first accessed the Truth with their blood, but Al may have learned *too* much, as he paid a significantly bigger toll than Ed or Izumi (this is something Ed theorizes before the whole Greed storyline, I checked just to make sure). So the addition of more and new "data" to the medium that connects Al's soul to the world may have been what allowed Al to remember it. Like, tricking the system into believing that Al is two mortal souls in a trenchcoat, just for a second, which gave Al access to the knowledge. (This is just what I remember guessing when I first watched it, at least. It stuck with me cause I thought it was neat.)

So first thing is, and this is not a spoiler, chimeras are no homunculus. It is stabilished since the beginning when Ed and Al go to the Leto's Church confront that priest, that chimeras are different animals combined into 1 being, and when Ed and Al meet Shou Tucker, we learn that there are no talking chimeras, and when Shou Tucker combines his daughter with the dog it is considered a crime. Then we learn that the military already discovered a way to successfully combine humans with animals and did this in secret.
Homunculus, as stated by Al himself are artificially created humans, which is another thing that no one knew it was possible AND human transmutation is prohibited by the military.
So, Greed is a homunculus and he has the orobos tattoo too, and his gang are of chimeras created by the military.
About Al remembering seeing the true, so we need to assert something first,
For the alchmestis to perform alchemy, they need to draw a transmutation circle, that will encompass all the formula for the transmutation, as we draw "equations" to a math problem...
So the circle is the rule for the transmutation to work.
When Martel dies, her blood spills on the blood circle of Al's soul transmutation and fucks the formula for his conscience.
Al as he is now, is an immortal being, that can't feel or sleep. So Al never loses his conscience. when his soul's transmutation circle is messed up, he loses his conscience, and that alone makes him remember what happened as a "dream", until Ed bring him back again probably by cleaning the circle.

I know this is a “hot take”, but I really do recommend watching the 2003 anime as well after this. The story is different after a certain point, but I find that it’s more character driven and Brotherhood kind of assumes you’ve watched ‘03. I love the manga and Brotherhood so much, but I know I’m the minority when I say I prefer ‘03. They did the best with what the had at the time and I just view it as an AU. They followed the creators notes as much as they could and created something that explores equally heavy but slightly different topics. Mustang’s and Scar’s arcs in the ‘03 version just hit different for me and they are the tipping points for why it’s my preferred anime. Not by a lot and I watch both every year or two. If you go into it knowing it’s different and should be viewed as such and taken for what it is, it’s a beautiful story that deserves a chance. It’s okay if you don’t as it absolutely isn’t required, but I figured I’d give it my best sell 😂 I can’t wait to hear more of your thoughts about this incredible story though.

My reading of Alphonse getting memories back that I don't think is actually in the text, but just seems to fit to me, is that the blood splatter triggered something like a near death experience. It was established super early on that that rune is what ties his soul to the armor, and any damage to the rune could sever the connection, so I think the blood splatter caused a bit of "his life flashing before eyes" sort of thing, going back to a major traumatic event that he had previously been repressed.

So I always envisioned it as channeling in a sense, so I had assumed that the splatter almost disrupts that connection or rather alters it so he was then able to perceive more of what happened back then since both the seal and the splatter are both blood, it may have caused some kind of interaction. Could be wrong though, it's just how I always internalised it

A few things (without spoilers) :
    - Stop thinking about Voldemort for Father, it's not the same thing at all :) If you still think like that for the next volumes you will be even more confused!
    - Alphonse as been through a lot of trauma. His memories of his transmutation (when Ed bring him back) were too much to handle and he repressed them. It was explained by Ed and Isumi (who ask her doctor for his opinion and he told her that another big trauma could bring Al's memories back). That's what happend when Martell was killed inside of him (nothing to do with her blood specificaly).
    - Chimera and Homonculus are not the same thing at all. Homonculus are artificial human beings that are fully created (in the story : the seven deadly sins). Chimeras are humans and/or animals who have been "mixed" together with alchemy like Nina and Alexander. The people who followed Greed were militaries who have been severely injured during war and were used as lab rats. They managed to get away when the lab they were in was destroyed. Homonculus are incredibly more powerful than normal humans but Chimeras are just "improved". Also the story of the chimeras who work for Greed was a big hint that the military system is shady AF since they don't care about their wounded, they just becoming more lab rats. At this point, Ed and Al are still a bit naive about how their country is ruled and how the rulers are caring about the people or not.

My headcanon for the bloodsplatter activating Al's memories is that it damages his rune which is the only thing that can separate his soul from the armor and "getting him closer" back to his original body, maybe for him its triggering a sleeplike state. Which could help working through memories? Keep in mind Al cant ever sleep, so this state of "coma" has been totally foreign to him ever since he got bound to the armor.

But in the way how I always understood is that the blood basically just interupts the rune and by that connection between the Al and the armor, so basically Al dies for a moment and that is why he can remember his meeting with Truth, because he basically lives through it again.
