  • See • Aquaglide Chinook fish... for an update to modifications I have made..
    This is my 4th edit as I make changes to my Chinook (two) fishing setup. This 10' kayak is perfect for me, as a one-man kayak, allowing storage room and a nice fishing setup. Aquaglide is a somewhat new company producing some decent kayaks. There are issues I have, shown in the video, but overall, a nice price point for the Yakima and the Chinook (given you can purchase these kayaks at certain times of the year for 20% off the list price).
    I also purchased the Aquaglide Deschutes (2) HB but did not see the value in this kayak, at 2x the Chinook price, so I returned it.

    Thanks for the comment. I purchased from REI, during a sale. I have been in contact with Aquaglide for a while now, telling them about the floor being porous and water being trapped in between the seat area (where you actually sit) and the bottom of the kayak (there is an air chamber between the two) - and the water gets trapped there. It's hard to get out and you don't want to leave it there; possible mold, and makes the kayak heavier. Draining is a pain as the kayak must be stood on end, blown back up when you get home, or done before you leave the lake - taking time to do. Or you flip the kayak over and let the water drip back thru the seat cover. On the 2015 model with this type floor, they have a small mesh net at one end allowing water to easily come out and into the drain plug area. This may be a good solution making the price point very desirable for many. I plan to return this one for the 2015 model, assuming the same price (or close) as REI has a 1 year return policy.
    Hope this information helps. This is a decent kayak - replace the Styrofoam seat insert with an air seat - it's GREAT! DO THIS!, watch the plastic skid pin - the metal one is working great, and if the mesh net works to drain the water quickly, this is a great kayak for use in most weather applications on a semi-calm lake.

    Hey Sduncan813 - Thanks for the comments - I continue to use the Chinook - heading out again today - soon - and it's all working great. Have you see all the video updates on this product (there are 3 I think) - and in one I have solved the problem of the rod holder, similar to what you say. It's working great with no issues. I have made a GREAT seat MOD - which really helps. The problem: The seat does not stay at the Max height allowing the most comfort - The back of the seat has a 'carrier' - with the top being a flap with Velcro on it. Use PVC, make a 14" x 14" (Approx) square. Put Velcro on the top of the Square AND the bottom of the square - 2 places on each side. Take the top flap of the seat and wrap it around the 1" PVC one complete time - you do the by attaching the Velcro first, then, turning the 14" PVC square so it tightens up the seat flap. Then stick the bottom side of the 14" PVC to the BOTTOM FLOOR seat Velcro so the 14" square now sits perpendicular to the floor and RIGHT BEHIND the seat - touching the seat. This now lifts the seat back UP, not allowing it to sit low - I will try to post a video as this may be one of the best mods to the Kayak - fishing or not (will help out for any general Kayak use). Hope you can follow the above as it's a wonderful mod - and perhaps someone can improve on it.

    Thanks La Castafiore - and clearly you don't need to use this Kayak as a fishing kayak but the dual paddle holders on each side of the Chinook lent itself to the set-up I have. I find a 10' Kayak to be ideal for carrying a picnic lunch, backpack, pump and other as you see fit. My wife has an 8' Kayak, and it's not nearly as roomy as a 10' one. I just returned from the lake, about my 15th trip out, and the Chinook is working well. I drain the water after each outing with the integrated drain-hole plug / screw, and get most of the water out - there is about 1 cup or so. I have looked around, and for the price, the Chinook will be hard to beat.

    I took your idea and built something like what you did out of PVC pipe but I changed it up to something differnt and would work for me . But I'm also waiting on some adaptors that will fit the Scotty mounts. I'm going to use it just to lightly pull myself into a standing position without putting stress on it . I have the Aquaglide XL kayak very durable.
    Thanks for your idea cool .

    Scott awesome setup and ideas! I went out and purchase a chinook Aquaglide based on ur video and got some grey electric pvc pipes (since I don't want to spray paint) to do my own rendition of the frame. But I used a lot of your ideas and just want to thank you for posting.

    This is a great demonstration of the kayak for use as a fishing vessel. I've been looking at getting one, but I was skeptical as to how well it could be used for fishing. I see that I was half right. Out of the box, it's fishing capabilities (just that little rod holder) are limited; but you've shown that with some DIY add-ons, it can be great. Thanks.
    I have a suggestion for your rod holder since it will continue to loosen every time you move it. Drill a 3/16" hole in the inside pipe, stick a #8x32-5/8" screw in the hole with the head on the inside of the pipe (threads sticking out). Cut a 3/16" slot in the outside pipe (coupling?) like you did on the inside pipe which will allow for the twisting. Use a wing nut on the outside of the assembly to hold the two pieces together. I have a sketch but can't upload it here.

      +sduncan813 Glad you liked it. Do the seat mod too which holds the seat back up higher. that helps on the longer trips.

    Great information regarding your set up. I have an inflatable hobie kayak. The one thing I need to figure out is the set up for allowing my kegs to power the kayak.

    Pucket - perhaps unclear what you are saying. The 45 degree 'A' frame allows your knees to slide under easily and gives easy paddling as the angle allows for both. I'm sure there are many custom mods you can make but this has worked well for me. Good luck on yours.

    Maybe try spraying the surface with hydrophobic paint so the water doesn't get in that middle part...

    nice setup. Just a random comment here, instead of the rod holder pyramid, wouldn't it be simpler to just run a pvc bar straight across the tubes?

  • @scottcov56

    Sorry, I don't read this much any more. The rod holder as attached with epoxy after cutting a 'U' shape to mate with the pvc pipe.

    Hay Scott, How did you "Weld" the rod holder to the PVC at that angle? Looks strong and professional.

    • @scottcove1580
      @scottcove1580 8 років тому

      +Thomas Collins Hey Tom. I have made a few rod holders now and the first one, the one you mention, was made by cutting a "U" shape in a 45 degree bend, then using epoxy to glue together. It was a decent fit to start with but by far the easier way is to use a 45 degree and a "T" section and connect the two together with a small 2" long PVC pipe (still 1" diameter as both the 45 degree and the T are 1". This works great and much easier than the first way I did it.

    Great job with the fishing setup. I'm wondering is you could extend it back and up to hold an umbrellas.

    • @scottcov56
      @scottcov56  8 років тому

      YES, I am thinking of this, more a canopy. On the Blackfoot you have 2 Scotty Mounts in the back and these could attach to a PCV canopy that would pull up and over your head. I have not started designing this yet, but am considering it. Weight might be an issue as the more you add, the heavier. I do put an umbrella in the back seat pocket - but have not used in over 25 times at the lake.. See the video on the Aquaglide Blackfoot - a better setup there.. but this one works great on this kayak

    • @ImOddTodd
      @ImOddTodd 8 років тому

      I may buy that same kayak, can you put you setup dimension on a link? I may play around with different ideas myself.

    • @scottcov56
      @scottcov56  8 років тому

      +Odd Todd - as the paddle Velcro straps (2 on each side) are in the same place make the PVC about 2 feet longer than that distance. This will give you plenty of room to slide the PVC back and forth and position how you want. Then you can cut the PVC to the exact length you want after you have tried it a few times. The 'A' frame area will meet at the top 90 degree PVC fitting so that distance will be fixed by the width of the 2 sides of the kayak.

    How's the ACCU-glide working for you. Is it the same as the AQUA-glide?

    • @scottcov56
      @scottcov56  10 років тому

      I am not aware of am accu product. As it shows on the video this is an Aquaglide product. It's working out great. I have no experience with a hard shell kayak as they tent to be heavy / can't transport far, they are expensive, much more than $400, and I don't have roof racks on my car to even carry a hard shell. I like being able to fold an inflatable up and carry into lakes. I carry two in my Prius with lots of room to spare. The only downside, inflatables are not 'fast'. I troll in mine with no problem, but notice inflatables are no where as fast as hard shell. A small concession for me.

      scottcov56 This is a good, funny, comment. I was visiting my brother this last week and he mentioned this - I did not understand what he was saying.. then he pointed out the ACCU vs the Aqua.. oops on my part.. have to smile. The product is clearly the Aquaglide, which it seems I have trouble saying..

    Not a good review, almost 15 minutes of modifying the kayak and nothing about the actual performance.

    • @scottcove1580
      @scottcove1580 8 років тому +1

      +Carl B Good Point Carl. I think, in general, inflatable kayaks are slower on the water than hard shell kayaks. For fishing, this is nice but if you want to get someplace fast, a hard shell kayak is a better choice. Other advantages of an inflatable: it's much lighter than a hard shell kayak, it can be backpacked into remote lakes - but you will want a lightweight inflatable or a nice backpack, or both! ; you don't need a roof rack with an inflatable, just fold it up and put it in the back seat or trunk. I carry 2 Chinooks in my Prius with all gear and room to spare. Stability is excellent. This inflates in 5 minutes or less and you CAN top off the inflation using your mouth should you need more pressure when you get out on the water. I carry a pump hose with me so I can insert it into the valve and blow into the other end. It does not take long, or much air, to inflate much harder should you need to do this. Hope this helps.

    The paddle holders are made from the 1" PVC. I cut about 1" of the PVC, then cut into a "C" shape. I used 3 of the C sections, used Silicon rubber to stick one inside the other then attached to the main PVC Tube. I used small screws to attach with countersinking the screw so the paddle would not hit the screws. Hope this help.; Works well.
