Interesting clip. I was stationed there in the Navy. It was Navfac Lewes then. The enlisted club was in one of the bunkers. The motor pool was in another. We were part of a small group that tracked submarines. My landlady told me that during the war, prisoners of war were housed there. The POWs were taken to church and the locals would take them home for Sunday supper and return them to the Camp. They were mostly Italian and German POWs. Our remote radio site was next to a Crematorian.
I grew up near there. 1965 - 2000. Restoration was a long time coming for such a historic area. I remember as a kid the amphibious vehicles that were along the shoreline along the Cape Henlopen/Lewes pier. Thank you to Gary Wray for his commitment and efforts to restore the area.
Back in the early 1980's, I attended a weeklong marine biology camp at Cape Henlopen State Park, put on by the University of Delaware. We slept in the Baracks(near Tower 8), had our meals in the mess hall, etc. This was back before Cape Henlopen became as popular as it is today, so it pretty much felt like we were the only people there. Just a bunch of 12, 13, and 14 year old's with the freedom to explore every inch of the park that we wanted to. It was truly an amazing, memorable experience. Thank you for sharing your visit.
thanks for sharing, I'm a local and you showed me more than I knew. I went with my dad when he was in the Delaware Nat. Guard and went on base when the Army controlled it. I was very young but have memories. There was a MP guard shack at the entrance and a barracks behind it. The road going in was cement and there is still the parade field on your right.
Story time: when I was a little kid my family took me here and they were doing a re-enactment and they asked for a volunteer at one point. Well I raised my hand and was chosen. Some guy dressed in military clothes asked me my name and all that. He then took me to the gun seen at 3:43 and handed me earplugs. He told me to put them in and then pull the cord. As soon as I pulled the cord I fired a blank from the cannon. One of the greatest moments of my life. (Ps. I think they stopped doing re-enactments last time I checked)
Wow absolutely fantastic. Those bunkers are so huge. Not sure I would have made it up all those step. Well up maybe not down. Really loved this, I so enjoyed walking with you
Many of the coastal fortifications along the Atlantic at the entrances to the bay waters actually had 'Controlled' Mines that could be set off from the "Mine Control Casemate". Spotters would estimate the position and the mine could be fired via an undersea cable.
My dad worked on batteries like the-is on the Pacific side. It's good to dee them up close. I don't know which size he worked on. He didn't tell many war stories. He was in WWII, most of the time in California I think.
Hey Cliff, love the military type videos you do as well as the abandoned coal mines with JP. Keep up the great work and look forward to seeing more of your amazing videos. Well done!!
Hi, you don't realise just how big those guns are until you get up close to one. A very cool place to visit and it has a lot of different area's with points of interest. Thank you for showing us around at an old military fort full of history. x
Snowing steadily over here, up north, now......maybe I will get to see some of these locations in the near future. I'm going to have a hot chocolate right now and watch the snow.....going to view the rest of this video on my TV with my parrot.
so surprised to see Cliff underdressed for the date. we are sitting in a snow storm in Illinois. he is so patient with rabbblerousers wherever he goes....we had a guy hit a guy over the head in our local Walmart with a ballbat......so maybe things aren't too bad if they aren't violent.
Very interesting, never heard of this before, one bunker was really camoflauged. Don't you ever get tired? Walking is suppose to keep you in good health, so, you must be Super-Healthy. Thx. For sharing what you discover and have a great week
my fiance and I went to Delaware a few months back... we spent alot of time in New Castle... we're going back to see all the battlefields. your videos are really interesting!
Incredible views from the watch tower. Peaceful now from back then. Bunkers very interesting how natural they look buried. Very neat to see one fully uncovered. Always feels like I am away on small vacation when I watch your videos. Thanks Cliff! :)
I don't think the turrets were donated, I think the 8 inch are the actual ones. It's only 85 years old, that and it used to sit in one of hundreds of those big old octagon shaped batteries. That 16-er probably came from a ship.
This fort is really cool their is a spot close to me that made tnt for the war effort it's now called State game land 252 it is behind the allenwood prison off of 15 north south. Bunkers of Alvira it was a town they took over and now it's a bunch of ammo storage igloos most are locked but there must be 150 of them
I love this place! I based my album art off of the beach.

That is a cool park! That Battery Herring looked awesome.

Very interesting to see. Makes sense to have that sort of defense there.

Wow. This place is not that far from where I live. I plan on going there.
The number of viewing decks for the towers depended on the importance and because of the three viewing decks ment it was very important

That was a good history lesson...both of my grandfathers fought in WW2 so this video was much appreciated...thanks
Bout time you reached 20k...
All joking aside, good job.
Thanks
16 inch guns were the armament on the Iowa class battleships too.
that big 16" was not part of the base, it is a gun off a Iowa class battleship.
The view from the tower is incredible. Thanks for climbing all those stairs = and going back down 😊.
Thanks 🙏🏻 for taking us up in the tower. Great 👍 views. Glad to learn more about our history.

The ONLY people that like skate boarders are other skateboarders
I’m not much of a skateboarder and I like skateboarders. I like watching them. Same with BMX riders and others who do extreme sports.
defo the same sound my man, proof again EVPs are bunkum, but I have an open mind with other phenomena 👍
U boat 858 surrendered at fort miles
