It's always fun to be there at a high point in someone's life. This clearly was such a moment for Pat. Like many of my fellow Americans I didn't see Time Team until lockdown. I've since seen all 275 episodes (more or less) multiple times. This one is among my three or four favorites.
Pat, your humanity and compassion for Henry really made this dig come alive for the viewers and the Time Team members. You and your husband were such lovely representatives of the Time Team audience. I hope your garden is thriving!
Haha so cool haven’t seen this in years they are my nan and grandad so my mums mum and dad. Think I’m in this somewhere I was prob like between age 5/8 maybe lol was like mid or ealry 2000s this was I think. Was crazy loved that house had such a big garden. They live in Wales now going to see them next month as nan isn’t very well atm. But vid is awesome brings back a lot of memories 😊
Exidra, so sorry to hear that your sweet Grandmother isn't well at the moment. Hope the visit was a good on. Must indeed be cool to see This tv show 17 years later. This TimeTeam episode was the first of their 10th season. Which aired on the 5th of January 2003.
Janet Stoker oh wow 2003 I would of been 5/6 lol and Yh was a good visit she doing a lot better now just have bit trouble with breathing she gets out of breath really quick and can't really use stairs hence why they live in bungalow now. Grandad is kind the same to and still makes all his model trains so guess he just does it to keep his busy and doing something .. Was a nice drive up there took 5 hours. Cool lil town they lived in not really much there to do.
Exidr a so your Granddad models trains eh? Funny thing, (being a railway enthusiast myself) when they started tearing into the rockery I thought to myself ‘Glad he didn’t have a garden railway there. That would have been a nightmare!’. Please pass on my greetings and thanks! All the best from Oklahoma!❤️
Wow, so glad I read the comments to see your comment here. This is one of my favourite episodes too and I'm not even in it lol. I hope your wonderful grandparents are well and happy still. I would have loved to be able to be around the Time Team crew when I was younger but I live in Australia so no chance for me. Have a great year ahead. 😃
This is my favorite episode of all of them. When I am feeling particularly sad I watch this and Pat makes me smile and then cry when seeing how happy she as to receive the picture. She is such a classy lady.
This was a really charming episode. I love how it developed from doubt to satisfaction. Victor's drawing at the end is so beautiful that Pat's reaction seems only natural.
This episode is every armchair archaeologist's dream. Lucky Pat for having it become a reality, she was obviously so thrilled to have Time Team there. Thanks so much for all these videos, this American appreciates each and every one of them.
What a splendid episode. It really highlighted Phil's skills in a way I hadn't seen before. My admiration for the man's abilities continue to grow. Their hosts were a delight, and Victor never fails to bring the history alive with his artwork. Loved it.
Pat is such a kind and genuinely compassionate person and her husband is equally so. Their generosity of spirit is inspiring. Many thanks to them. This episode brought tears to my eyes.
I think it was amazingly kind for them (Phil) to allow her to actually be down in the pit, carefully picking away at the grave along side the others. How very generous of them. You’re a special man, Phil! 👵🏻🐾💕🇨🇦
Well, she also proved that she at least had some idea of what she was doing when she unearthed Henry the first time. Phil is a lovely man but he's not going to let just anyone work on an excavation that delicate unless he's sure they're not going to mess it up.
The fact that I live five miles away from Raunds does not influence me when I say that this is, in my opinion, one of the best Time Team programmes I have seen.
And then say he didn't actually mean it if the diggers go bash John over the head with their trowels while the rest of the geophys team look on horrified.
I love how everyone in the team was so invested in trying to find another grave for Pat. They were all so determined to find one, or at least make sure they did their best. So happy that they were able to prove it was a cemetery in the end.
The moment that Pat was presented with a portrait of "Henry" was intense. After watching this show, going in order, I always think that I watched my favorite episode. Until I watch the next one.
As a farmer and a gardener, I don't want anyone to worry about that garden. They will have a much better growing cotton after all the digging loosening the soil. Remember about crop marks, the green is where the ditches were. They are going to end up with a better growing garden and one that will handle drought better.
So, so happy for Pat and Morris to learn so much about "Henry" and the other folks buried in their garden. What an honor to be caretakers of the past and its people. The BEST episode I have seen. Thanks to all.
The back gardens are my favourite episodes. I remember watching this when it was originally broadcast. I think this one is a perfect example of the manpower and what goes into this because of its all in one garden.
I'm working my way through all episodes one by one, and just arrived at this one. Time Team has completely warped my priorities - I think more than anything in the universe, I want to find a Saxon cemetery in my back garden. 😎
And indigenous people don't count? TT would've been delighted to also find bones or other traces of any hunter-gatherers of Old European stock whose quasi-disappearance more or less coincided , if not to say was due to, the arrival of incoming Indo-European speaking farmers from the Continent.
Sorry, too much eliptical reference to little-known UK anthropology? It's just to say, in Massachussetts you're far more likely to dig down on a Pequot (not sure, but anyway some indigenous New England tribe member) than a pure Saxon (Saxon descendants are more common in areas of heavy German immigration to the US). Because even in the British population, Saxon genes are not the largest proportion. When TT sets out to find X, but instead or also find Y, they switch gears and are glad to contribute to their knowledge on that account. (The British Isles have seen many mass arrivals of new people from the East who either added to the local genetic mix or in some cases almost completely replaced it, at least in the male line. Old Europeans were those who occupied Western Europe for tens of thousands of years (think Lascaux cave). They were mainly hunter-gatherers until some farming practices appeared in the late neolithic and we don't know what language(s) they spoke but it was certainly not the Celtic or Germanic languages that became dominent with the settlers/conquerors from the East who were all descended from people, if you go back far enough, coming from where the Indo-European language group originated. (There are a few tiny pockets of people of Old European stock still found in a few places (Sardinia, N. Finland etc.)
This was truly moving - the connection back to an almost personal level is astonishing because of the quality of the archaeology all round and astounding for the human detail. It also made the moment of a lifetime for a devoted fan who was almost stunned at the turn of events by end day three - I think she was past caring that her garden had been turned into the back side of the moon 😂 Super episode 👏👏👏😍🙏
Thank you Reijer Zaaijer, the work you did on these episodes is appreciated. My wife and i are both qualified Archaeologists with interests in Australian Culture. In Australia we did not get all these early episodes and have enjoyed the experience. We both spent 8 weeks in Europe in 2012 going to digs we had study and read about. We both wish we had found your video collection before our trip. We also came back to Australia with a better appreciation of kinder weather conditions.
I found this series a few years ago but only a few were on here and then I found Reijer Zaaijer's whole play list and I started from the beginning and I just finished this episode. He has done the world a favor by compiling this awesome show under one channel, WELL DONE and THANK YOU! After seeing Victor's drawing of what Henry may have looked is awesome. It really bugged me that it reminded me of an actor who had played on Game of Thrones.....could he be a very, very, very distant relative of Henry. The actor has the prominent cheek bones and distinguished chin.......Jerome Flynn is the actor of which I speak.
One of the best episodes of Time Team I have seen. Loved how much the team let the garden owners be a part of the process. And of course the tear-jerking picture of Henry and the quote about him, and the young lady with her dog at her feet. Great stuff.
When I think of other episodes that I've rated a 10 on imdb this one would get a 20! Absolutely my favourite yet. Just when I think it can't get any better, they blow me away!
but then there's also episodes where John's machines work amazingly or are just faint enough for his trained eye to see something but no one else believes him. those episodes also are gold! also, John's "rivalry" at one point with Stewart Ainsworth... comedy!
Time Team really should do some follow ups on how the people involved are doing Today . Many of us ,such as myself are 'new' Time Team viewers and I wonder are the people still alive ? Where are they today ? Loved this video ! Pat was so passionate about doing the right thing about "Henry". She sacrificed her garden to learn more . God bless and prayers for Pat and Morris .Hope they are doing well these days.
Well, there's a chance that they in fact killed the dog to put it in the grave with the girl, so I don't know how "awww" of a story this actually is ^^
Unless the woman died of despondency after the loss of her pet, or it of hers. I suppose your explanation is the most likely, but at least it wasn't a human sacrifice so common among prehistoric peoples (and documented even among 20th c. groups still living in a stone age manner).
Another wonderfully satisfying episode. We Have To Applaud the behind-the-scenes people who figured out what to film! I'd like to imagine they were charmed by Pat and Morris, and chose this site accordingly. Note that Dr. Helen says (8:40-49) that Victor's reconstruction showed her ideas to be wrong - wonderful detail. I winced when the girl yanked a nice bush out by the roots (11:07) - I hope TT bought a replacement for that plant!
Depends on the plant. Rockery plants are usually pretty hardy and used to difficult conditions. This seems to be happening during a good season for transplantation, and I suppose it was done immediately. With that kind of soil turnover, this couple should see bumper growth in the next few years. Though if that plant suffered a bit but survived, some stunting could be a good thing for a rockery, because sometimes you have a bigger problem with your babies getting too big too fast and ruining the whole shebang.
That was Catherine Edwards, I believe. I saw her years later on a weird (to me) dig Tony narrated (not Time Team) in London. They were pulling down something old to build new and they had to allow archaeological investigation after demolition of the old. But it was all happening right at the same time, side by side. She slept right in the middle of the site, supposedly, it looked like a half-bunker with tarps strung over it and buggies all around it so it didn't get run over by a JCB, presumably. It looked like she was the only woman and maybe they had the men in an old policeman's barracks or something, I don't know. Dr. Damian Goodburn, Wood Technology Expert on TT and he was with MOLA for donkey's years, he was there, too. If you watch these types of documentaries, you never know who might turn up!
Ha Ha. Starting at 28:18, I'm just trying to picture someone going door-to-door here in the States, asking folks if they have any skeletons buried in their yards.
Sadly, they'd risk becoming premature skeletons themselves. The number of articles I see about unwitting foreign students going to the wrong house getting shot by witless homeowners in the US is appalling.
@alanrtment porter Yeah, can't happen fast enough for me. It's time for America to build a WALL.... around Trump and his family. And in 4,000 years a future Time Team can excavate it.
Wonder what they'll think of the gold-plated toilet? "Obviously a high-status individual, but why does the room it's in seem to have had bars on the windows?"
... What a pity that the late great Lady Peel (aka Beatrice Lillie) isn't still with us, quite willing to render "There Are Saxons At The Bottom Of My Garden".
great episode. wonder if the dog died at the same time of the young lady. or if it was sacrificed. the home owner sure enjoyed every minute. genuine too. compared to the episode where the guy try to fake his finds. A+ episode.
Chris c this was my favourite episode and the worst was the awful guys in TT special who robbed a Roman site using their metal detector and only thought about making money, lots of money.
Imagine "Henry" looking on, no idea what they're saying but proper chuffed to be found and have people care about him and the people buried around him too. There's something so special about "Henry" being immortalized like this.
Sunday.2/2/2020. I love this program!!!!! They should have sent Phil off to have a pint or two, while the survey was goin on!! Tony said, "Happy as Larry". WHAT DOES THIS MEAN?? beautiful people, and show. just sayin
Many animals, coins and food were sent with the person who died. So the pupper may have been a special pet to that person maybe even what we call service dog.
On another TT, can't remember which one, someone was upset they'd killed the dog, and Mick said, "They didn't see it like that; they didn't want to forever in the afterlife without their dog!"
after watching a lot of these, I dreamt last week that I'd bought a new property and was excited to take possession as I knew there was something waiting to be excavated in the back yard. So disappointed when I woke up and discovered that the only things to look for in the back yard were an old garage which was probably torn down around 1949 to make room for an extension to the house (and probably had only an earthen floor) and a well head for an artesian well.
It was really centered on humanness, with the 'finds''' being brought to life as individual human beings together with the lady of today's genuineness. I think that's what makes it so touching and relatable. The remarks all seem to pick up that aspect.
You can see my grandfather's childhood house (which was also my great-uncle Horace's home right up until his death c.2003) in those aerial shots! Just looked it up on Google maps, it definitely doesn't look right without Coggins Boot factory next door, but still... Can't believe I've not seen this episode before!
thank you i watch reg.pity the producers updated the show.No offence to the female presenter they popped in later but ,,WHY?They killed their own hit programme. I love Phill Tony all the ladies and am very sad about MICK s sudden death.A GREAT LOSS.
I know this was posted three years ago but I so agree with you I just had to comment. My guess is they brought the lady presenter (who is coincidentally a former beauty queen of sorts ;)) to the team to draw in younger people. Unfortunatelly she lacked Tony's presence and enthusiasm. The last season wasn't all that good either and I must agree with Mick who said the TV station who made the show dumbed it down. There's much more messing around shown.
Kirkkaan Oranssi or tim taylor the producer had a mid life crisis and hired a dolly bird. Losing Helen and Mick and (mostly) Stewart was an insane idea
@alanrtment porter Agreed! I tried to watch the first episode of TT US on PBS and I hhhhhhhhhhhated it! Only made it through about 10 minutes before coming back online to rewatch Mick and the gang.
@alanrtment porter that's just a dumb thing to say,,,I loved this show till they screwed with the cast,,and I'm born and bread in the US! I could care less about hair and tits thank you very much! Keep that opinion on your side of the pond

Lucky I found them earlier.....
Pat, your humanity and compassion for Henry really made this dig come alive for the viewers and the Time Team members. You and your husband were such lovely representatives of the Time Team audience. I hope your garden is thriving!
Totally agree! Really impressed with how much attention to detail and technique they paid when finding Henry in the first place. Well done!
I agree, but special thanks to Pat for having taken the time and care to dig Henry out of the ground as if you were a professional!
Pat is a blessing to humanity and there are too few Pats in the world.
This! ^^^

First time I've cried for someone who lived so long ago. Beautiful eulogy.

Lol Phil understood it was her garden and he was only there on her permission. he was just being properly courteous as one would expect from him.
I loved the way she described freeing the skeleton from the soil when she found it . . . according to what she had learned by watching TT.
Well, she also proved that she at least had some idea of what she was doing when she unearthed Henry the first time. Phil is a lovely man but he's not going to let just anyone work on an excavation that delicate unless he's sure they're not going to mess it up.
Well, that's the first episode to bring a tear to my eye. Pat seems a genuinely sensitive person. Bless her and her Morris.
I absolutely agree. Her pure joy at 29:00 when she gets in the trench is just beautiful A great TT moment.
Yeah, man..it was a real heart-squeezer for some reason...
I just watched it, and that was my first thought: the first time I got weepy in an episode. Between Pat, and the dog…*sniff*
@Jimmy Needham lol what?
Phil is always so respectful and gentle handling last remains. Always a gentleman..
The fact that I live five miles away from Raunds does not influence me when I say that this is, in my opinion, one of the best Time Team programmes I have seen.
Kettering?
"Will no one rid me of the turbulent scientist?" Phil, you're a gem! Brilliant!
Stephi Varjan 😆🤣😆
Pat & Morris are a total delight...lovely couple.
Well I don't often get a lump in my throat from Time Team but I sure did on this one! Wonderful episode!
Yeah she cared alot her husband cared that she really did....
Favorite Time Team episodes: Pat's skeleton; the fogou; the warriors; and the fake place in Wales. Such fun! I adore Time Team.
I know one is not supposed to get emotional about a TV series, but this episode was very touching. thank you TT!
The back gardens are my favourite episodes. I remember watching this when it was originally broadcast. I think this one is a perfect example of the manpower and what goes into this because of its all in one garden.
So emotional, such a rich episode. Simply beautiful
To explore a trench with Phil .... dream come true!
When Phil persists, there’s got to be something! 👍🏻
I'm working my way through all episodes one by one, and just arrived at this one. Time Team has completely warped my priorities - I think more than anything in the universe, I want to find a Saxon cemetery in my back garden. 😎
+Keith Jefferds Me, too! Do you suppose there are any in Massachusetts?
+Green Flash - I'm sure there are many Anglos in the ground in good old Ma, and some above it still.
@@cathjj840 wow you know your shit tats for sure..well done..
This was truly moving - the connection back to an almost personal level is astonishing because of the quality of the archaeology all round and astounding for the human detail. It also made the moment of a lifetime for a devoted fan who was almost stunned at the turn of events by end day three - I think she was past caring that her garden had been turned into the back side of the moon 😂
Super episode 👏👏👏😍🙏
Only one where the inviter is there to help
Besides Mrs rainbow
Thank you Reijer Zaaijer, the work you did on these episodes is appreciated. My wife and i are both qualified Archaeologists with interests in Australian Culture. We both wish we had found your video collection before our trip. We also came back to Australia with a better appreciation of kinder weather conditions.
This is what makes archeology exciting, all the little bits and pieces. Great episode.
TIME TEAM WAS DEFINITELY, ONE OF MY FAVORITE ALL-TIME SHOWS!!....Imjusayin'....
Wonderful how art and archaeology work together to tell a piece of the story from so long ago ... perfect programme!
Love this show! Found this episode particularly touching!
Absolutely wonderful show! Science and humanity all together.
Such a great show, and the ending of this one was very moving.
Love the humanizing of the stories the team puts together, and the teaching of history…why isnt high school taught like that?
Most kids don't care, only the grades
This is my favorite time team. And the ending for Pat with Henry was perfect. I would love to have a Saxon cemetery in my backyard.
I found this series a few years ago but only a few were on here and then I found Reijer Zaaijer's whole play list and I started from the beginning and I just finished this episode. Hey! yeah! I see what you mean!!! it'd be amazing if "Henry" really was an ancestor to Flynn, but it's very unlikely...
Victor was a fantastic artist!
Found it! This video is in my top favorites. Thank you, Reijer.
One of the best episodes of Time Team I have seen. Loved how much the team let the garden owners be a part of the process. And of course the tear-jerking picture of Henry and the quote about him, and the young lady with her dog at her feet. Great stuff.

I'd be just like Pat, all up in every moment of the dig, and thrilled to dig with Phil Harding
The home owner who dug up her Henry was so lovely 🤗
This was the most moving episode yet. Totally loved it!
*DEFIANTLY THE SWEETEST* time teem episode
Seasons 9-12 is considered by many to be the golden age of Time Team. I must agree!
Many of my favorites are in season 6 & 7, as well.
I just love all the reasons John Gator gives for his machines not working, and how Phil seems to be delighted when he does. Great TV!!
but then there's also episodes where John's machines work amazingly or are just faint enough for his trained eye to see something but no one else believes him. those episodes also are gold!
also, John's "rivalry" at one point with Stewart Ainsworth... comedy!
I have seen almost all of Time Team but some how this one got away from me so a sincere thank you!
I love this episode! So heart warming and perfect. Pat you are fantastic
Time Team really should do some follow ups on how the people involved are doing Today . Many of us ,such as myself are 'new' Time Team viewers and I wonder are the people still alive ? They have passed away. A grandchild left some comments.
@unowen9668 Yes, I read they were pleased.....
One of my favorite episodes. Pat is lovely.
1 of my favourite episodes :)
hallets1956 Mine also. These episodes are so interesting
Mine too
Me, too! Just watched this one and of all the favourites, this one is my MOST favourite, by a mile!
I have seen so many Time Teams over the last six months....but this one brought me to tears..... Oh, Henry 😢
One of the “finder” episodes. Mesmerizing. Thank you.
The restoration guy in the white coat looked so excited about the belt buckle/strap thingie.
What a great episode! Could be one of my favorite, along with the huge Roman villa!!
awww the little puppy forever sleeping with it's human friend.
Well, there's a chance that they in fact killed the dog to put it in the grave with the girl, so I don't know how "awww" of a story this actually is ^^

Love how they humanized the remains and found so much background
The back garden has been pretty well restored and the large shed has a new bright blue roof.

Great episode! Love all of you guys :-) Best, from a proud patreon
Fantastic series. Love archeology.
Pat has the CUTEST GIGGLE! Omg! Cheers, Morris. One of my top five episodes.
I wonder how many of the neighbors started digging up their back yards after this.
wow. one of my favorite episodes yet. amazing.
One of your very best! The details are breathtaking.
Wonderful....thanks so much for putting these up.
That lady was STOKED.
Thanks for posting! !!🙏😙💕
Enthralling episode showing us that ancient treasures can be found in Britain absolutely anywhere.
Good to see Alice Roberts

I finally figured out who Morris reminds me of on my second viewing -- Frasier's dad.
Perhaps they're distantly related. John Mahoney is from England.
He does look like Frasier's dad! 😂
Frasier's Dad talked a lot more. I'm re-watching it now and it just struck me how quiet Morris was.
This was the most beautiful episode ever!
@@cathjj840 Sorry to say, but it's all too true.
@@cathjj840 And why are the bones associated with an enormous quantity of petrified bulls***?
... What a pity that the late great Lady Peel (aka Beatrice Lillie) isn't still with us, quite willing to render "There Are Saxons At The Bottom Of My Garden".
Damn I love this show!
When Tony finished the usual intro with the "...three days to do it...", I half expected Pat to say: "I'll put the kettle on..."
Fun fact: dr. Alice Roberts currently presents the program 'Digging for Britain'.
great episode. wonder if the dog died at the same time of the young lady. or if it was sacrificed. the home owner sure enjoyed every minute. genuine too. compared to the episode where the guy try to fake his finds. A+ episode.
Which episode was that? Would love to watch it!
@@nixdodd , this link brings you to the famous "fake" TimeTeam dig in Wales.

Chris c this was my favourite episode and the worst was the awful guys in TT special who robbed a Roman site using their metal detector and only thought about making money, lots of money.
@@stoker1931jane Yes, I just saw that one . . . a lot of dodgy stuff going on!
The best I have seen.
They should've got Pat on the Time Team! :)
Imagine "Henry" looking on, no idea what they're saying but proper chuffed to be found and have people care about him and the people buried around him too. There's something so special about "Henry" being immortalized like this.
THE DOWSER WAS RIGHT! Give him his due!
Carenza looks so beautiful, there with Pat and Morris on the sofa. So young. Genuinely happy for the pair of them.
Really like this episode. Plus I’m a Morris. 😁
Thats a huge lot! Beautiful location.
Sunday.2/2/2020. I love this program!!!!! They should have sent Phil off to have a pint or two, while the survey was goin on!! Tony said, "Happy as Larry". WHAT DOES THIS MEAN?? beautiful people, and show.
just sayin
I hope they didn't sacrifice the dog, but then, I have known dogs who have been utterly miserable after their "person" has died.
Considering pets have been found in other Saxon graves like this one has been I would say it is safe to assume the pet was sacrificed.
The knife is called a seax. It's where the name saxon comes from in English
Love the garden gnome table!
Henry looks like the actor, Jerome Flynn.
after watching a lot of these, I dreamt last week that I'd bought a new property and was excited to take possession as I knew there was something waiting to be excavated in the back yard. So disappointed when I woke up and discovered that the only things to look for in the back yard were an old garage which was probably torn down around 1949 to make room for an extension to the house (and probably had only an earthen floor) and a well head for an artesian well.
Somehow this one seems very poignant.
It was really centered on humanness, with the 'finds''' being brought to life as individual human beings together with the lady of today's genuineness. I think that's what makes it so touching and relatable. The remarks all seem to pick up that aspect.
This American is with you on all that!
You can see my grandfather's childhood house (which was also my great-uncle Horace's home right up until his death c.2003) in those aerial shots! Just looked it up on Google maps, it definitely doesn't look right without Coggins Boot factory next door, but still...
Can't believe I've not seen this episode before!
nice cozy lil place to call home with saxon hangin abt in me yard lol
thank you i watch reg.pity the producers updated the show.No offence to the female presenter they popped in later but ,,WHY?They killed their own hit programme.
Stopped looking when the big White teeth lady was in, and dropped Helen
Well make it Heinrich then... He is a Saxon, so most likely he has that kind of a name...
Excellent episode
