Turning The Most Stunning Walnut Bowl - Twice Turned Double Feature - Copper Owl Woodturning

  • In this video, I turn a very wet piece of Eastern Black Walnut into a stunning bowl the most stable way I know. Twice turning. First the bowl is roughed out and packed in the shavings in a cardboard box to dry and distort. After a few months the roughed-out bowl is unpacked from the cardboard box and mounted back on the lathe for the second tuning. This method along with the wood being quarter sawn should produce a bowl that is true and stable with minimal distortion. This method also gives a great excuse for the video to be a double feature. I hope you enjoy the video(s) as much as I enjoyed making it.
    Have a nice day.

    Nice one Rob. Really nice looking wood.
    I had to chuckle as I just finished a twice turned Black Walnut bowl. I will not be showing it for 2 weeks or so. There will be a surprise at the end.

    Great video, great result. I love your dust collection hood. Collapsible, nice. I need to get mine fixed and incorporate this idea. I had that exact Laguna lathe. Needed more capacity and power, and upgraded but I turned a bunch of small to medium size pieces on that bad boy. Had some forward/reverse switch issues, secondary reason for new lathe. At least I could justify the upgrade cost to my wife! Lol. You have any issues? Just a thought, if you have a larger diameter chuck you could eliminate the rechuck, on the dry turning, if you are ok with an attractive foot. In my opinion I like a foot on my bowls, plus it saves me time. My preference only. To make the foot so you don’t need to worry about it needing extra sanding, etc just make the foot/tenon the exact diameter of your large jaws when it is perfectly circular, usually like one turn back from completely closed, where the jaws are separated by approximately 1/8” or slightly less. I call it the “no mar” diameter. Of course I forgot to mention that I would have turned a quick interior mortised shoulder to mount the bowl on first, on the large chuck, versus using the jam chuck and tail stock. Easily done using the tenon from your rough turned bowl. I have an aversion to turning bowls around the third time when I can finish beautifully without having to. Again, just me and my eccentric quirks. Hope this makes sense. Take care and I will watch more videos of yours again. Keep on the lookout for some of my videos. I have a little bit of content that I think would be UA-cam worthy, but I’m old and I just need to figure out how to get it done. My stuff is made under the moniker “Old Fart Wood Art”. Take care, Scott

      Thank you Scott.😊 Also thank you for all of the information. Sometimes I do like you mentioned and leave the foot on too. I appreciate your passion for wood turning. 😊 I do like my lathe bit definitely looking to upgrade to a bigger more robust lathe. I had to replace the banjo it cracked and wouldn’t right down on the tool rest I also replaced the motor it started making a clicking sound after a bad catch that stalled the motor for too long before I could shut it off. The banjo was covered under warranty, but the motor was $300. I do remember when I first got the lathe it got stuck in reverse. I turned it off for a bit and it fixed itself. No problem with that since.

    What’s that noise- bad bearing?

    • @copperowlwoodturning5929
      @copperowlwoodturning5929  14 днів тому

      Hi Neil. I think the noise comes from the live center bearing when using a jam chuck. I probably over tightened it too. I try another live center next time and see if that is it. Is that when you noticed the noise? When I remounted between centers using the jamb chuck?

      Hi David. Thank you for watching and commenting. This is actually my first twice turn bowl, but also I often practice cuts, scrapes and sheer scrapes as I am turning before I get to the end. 1 it is so satisfying and 2 it gives me a good idea how the wood is going react and what it may take to get a perfect finish cut on it. In short, I like woodturning. 😊😊😉

    Lovely bowl, you need to work on your presentation of the bowl gouge to the wood. tool rest height and angle of the flute as you make your entry are incredibly important and that's why you keep skating across the face of the piece.
    Tomislav just did a good video on this but a lot of the big turner's have recently talked about this to a degree in a video.
