“They’re doing a good job for what was probably put together in a short period of time” who’s gonna tell him Blackpink fans been waiting 2 years for this😭💀
@@Lily-cd4fx 2 years is standard time if you have to start an album fron scratch, but a lot of kpop groups including BP usually just buy scrapped demos from western artists and re record them. Also groups will usually release mini albums as opposed to full albums so there's really no excuse. For BP is even worse bc they're basically re recording demos that were written for their senior group 2NE1 that have been sitting on a computer for years lol. The songs are there, it's just that their label likes to create scarcity in the fandom and use it as a marketing strategy
I think it seems like the girls aren’t really into it. In the reels I’ve been getting of them dancing to promote pink venom it looks like they don’t wanna be there.
Exactly, that's everything wrong about K-Pop. Artists being overworked, starving, underpaid, treated like they're less than human, etc. People call me overreacting or "woke" for bringing this kind of shit up. I'm simply just being a person with empathy who enjoys music and can't stand when people are treated badly.
@@Kalitayy this is very true! I feel like in the case of black pink, however, they just all have better things going on. Like how Jennie’s getting into acting and they’re all designer brand ambassadors. In their earlier music they seemed to care more but they’ve branched out to other stuff. Looks like Lisa is the one who wants to keep going with music. I gotta say I reeeally don’t like her solo stuff but she at least looks like she wants to be doing it lol. I wouldn’t be surprised if they disband as soon as the contract allows. I’d say good for them!
@@Kalitayy the thing is kpop fans know about this stuff more than anyone else and talk about it constantly. The difference is we discuss it with the nuance of 1. Western media often depicts these issues without nuance or cultural sensitivity and can distort things to make things worse than they are 2. Some companies are worse than others and some are actually rather decent, as much as a corporation can be decent. Many artists are given freedom to self produce (Stray Kids) and are given adequate support for their mental and physical wellbeing (Ateez) and many aren’t. 3. As Tom Scott says, people always draw the line below what they actually do. Supporting kpop is bad but it’s ok to watch anime where animators are treated just as badly, if not worse. Kpop is bad, but corporate American pop music is okay. Kpop is bad but buying phones made in Chinese factories where workers are overworked is okay. Where do we draw the line? 4. The issues in kpop are a small symptom of a wider capitalistic issue that surrounds Korean society and is far more complicated and nuanced than “kpop bad.” May as well boycott everything that comes from Korea if you want to avoid the stuff, so say goodbye to your Samsung phone. And don’t think you can just consume Japanese media bc these issues are rampant there too. So people do listen to you, they probably just think you’re not exploring this in a nuanced enough way.
Big BLACKPINK fan here. The lyrics reference a lot of makeup and fashion brands that they are associated with like Coco Chanel perfume and Celine jewelry. It's about going to the mall when boys fuck things up in your life, music to dance in front of your mirror to when you feel like a baddie and it's supposed to very female capitalist oriented (kind of conflicting given the predatory producers in the wider K-pop scene) commercial and designed for slumber parties with giant pieces of candy. I usually listen to it in between Mother I Sober and Break Stuff.
@@lisalegato0109 it’s music made by straight women talking about failures in their relationships so like of course it’s really only going to talk about guys instead of girls what are you trying to say here
People been saying that Teddy (BP's main music producer) is the biggest problem that BP has for years. He keeps using same sound from the freaking 2ne1 era (YG's girlgroup before BP), recycle it, modify a bit, and then release it. Other YG groups, albeit still the same "corporate pop" but aren't produced by Teddy, don't suffer from similar problems.
And yet teddy wins producer of the year awards and most of his productions are monster hits. i guess the issue isnt teddy but YOU who dont like it. because the numbers shows that teddy is doing everything right.
there is absolutely MUCH better kpop than this despite it all being manufactured (some more than others). IMO, the worst "kpop" songs are those specifically trying to appeal to the western market. it manages to bump up the manufactured sound to 11 when otherwise, it could at least be unapologetically kpop (which yes, is still made up of western pop sounds and trends, but they at least wouldn't be trying to "make it" in the US while they were just fine doing what they were doing)
I love Blackpink, and I’m going to see them in November, but I respect your opinions, Brad, because I’m a sensible being who accepts that we don’t all have to like or dislike the same things.
i think part of the reason why it's hard to like these songs is that they're are consumed by people who aren't at all what the boisterous lyrics portray, they merely view it in their mind as extremely desirable, in which case they need to get over these aspirations instead fantasizing about putting everybody else down. a likable person is not what these songs describe
I don't even like kpop, but it's fucking music, obviously its not made to be realistic ALL THE TIME. I listen some songs about heartbreak/bad relationship but I'm in a stable relationship for 4 years. I listen to suicidal music when I'm okay. Music is supposed for you to enjoy it, it doesn't need to reflect who you are. We can listen to music literally not caring for what it says. You don't need to be deep all the time. I listen to vocaloid sometimes not understanding SHIT, but I enjoy it. Brad is being an asshole.
I’m mean that’s a lot of American music too but you’d be surprised how accurate this is. K-pop actually has many songs that are actually a brand commercial. Like Coco Cola has several songs they’ve made with some Kpop groups to just be about their brand, and the k-popers gobble it up if it’s catchy enough😂 No hate to New Jeans
They have been a group for 6 years and as someone who has watched them since they debuted I was very disappointed in their recent releases. They don’t have musical growth in their discography and these flex culture type of songs and lyrics are getting really corny and wack at this point. Great Review ❤️❤️
western artist besides the provocative dance What's the development? No .original music, repetitive lyrics no beat change. one beat one song is very boring
@@parkpark6976 You have to look in the right places to find the good stuff if you're saying that. mainstream music does not represent the general population, it's just the tip of the iceberg the market is just very over saturated and stuff that gets prioritized and promoted is what's most profitable for music labels and companies. there's tons of amazing artists all over the world that are mostly not popular we are in an age where there's a talent boom because of the resources that we have compared to the past decades
@@okcookie8886 Yes and I said about 6 years BP comment, but western artists are in the 2000s. I don't see any improvements because they are too clingy. @@parkpark69761. This person's clearly only talking about black pink. Not other K-pop groups. Other K-pop groups have more to offer. There's nothing wrong with liking blackpink, but you are just being ridiculous if you think they have had any musical identify growth since 2016. It's basically the same. 2. idk why you are talking about Western artists when no one is talking about Western artists. But if you are a K-pop fan you really don't have a leg to stand on since from the very beginning of K-pop groups- They've been heavily influenced by Western music (to were you can literally pin point which American acts 90s and early 2000s k pop acts were imitating) and most mainstream/big K-pop groups basically have a "k popified" version of whatever is popular in the west. (Mind you I'm not a k pop hater. This is just the truth). So if you think western music has been the same for 20-years then so has K-pop.
3:50 "This chorus that sounds way out of place." My biggest issue with Blackpink. A lot of their songs are listenable until you get to the chorus. They started doing this in the past few years and it's awful.
i’m gonna recommend you listen to red velvet, who just in under a year released “Rookie”, a kinda divisive funky-pop song set in a too colorful and saturated world, “Red Flavor” a refreshing dancepop summer song with cool percussion, “Peekaboo”, a more mature uptempo kinda tropical song and “Bad Boy” a pretty standard but smooth r&b song. They differentiate their fun and bright songs from their smoother, more mature and darker ones, respectively calling them their RED side and their VELVET side, but when they combine them we get cute but eery concepts. Highly recommend their Korean full albums
I would also like to see a reaction to a red velvet album as I think their b-sides are some of the best in kpop. like sm entertainment knows how to hire good songwriters
Hey Brad! 💚 I don’t know if you care about any of this, but I’ll give you a few key reasons as to why BLACKPINK’s music is the way that it is, from someone who used to be a fan. A little r/HobbyDrama moment on your comment section: 1 - BLACKPINK debuted under a company called YG Entertainment, which was founded by a member of one of the first and biggest k-pop groups back in the 90s, responsible for popularizing hip-hop’s sound in South Korea. This shows in YG Entertainment’s repertoire, they’re one of the big 3 companies in the k-pop industry, and their signature style is usually hip-hop. Problematic, caricature-ish, appropriating hip-hop… but hip-hop 🙂 2 - What BLACKPINK do in k-pop is considered “girl crush”. “Girl crush” is a genre of k-pop concept (visuals) that consist of very charismatic music, performances, fashion style, etc. Very much “badass” and in-your-face, girl power! Back when they debuted, in 2016, k-pop was going in a more cutesy, dream pop direction, so their debut was very refreshing. With YG Entertainment being one of the big 3 companies, their arrival was also highly anticipated and they were very successful, and still are. I would probably say that aside from their senior group, 2NE1, which probably helped popularize if not fully created this “girl crush” concept, BLACKPINK are the current blueprint for “girl crush”, and if you get into k-pop you’ll probably come across a lot of groups that remind you of BLACKPINK. 3 - One of the masterminds behind YG Entertainment’s signature style is this producer called Teddy Park. He helped create many of YG’s biggest hits spanning from the late 2000s to the early 2010s. Due to his success as a producer, Teddy’s skills became a must on pretty much every single music release that came from YG Entertainment. Unfortunately this means two things: YG’s style did not evolve past the 2010s - which was their peak - and in my opinion that shows in BLACKPINK’s music. The company has a small variety of other in-house producers (like 3?) and these are mostly the people they work with. They don’t usually seek producers outside the company, they have a very tight grip on what their music should sound like and they’re not willing to let go of it no matter how outdated it sounds; secondly, since Teddy’s input is needed on every release, it means a group like BLACKPINK, in which the members aren’t allowed input in their music and creative freedom, as opposed to some other artists in the company (misogyny 😍) is very much at the mercy of the availability on his schedule, since he has to supervise everything. A k-pop group like BLACKPINK, which is nearing their contract renewal (meaning, they might disband soon), should have a much bigger discography than they do, and specially one that shows growth. They have around 25+ original songs, released throughout almost 7 years. For comparison, k-pop group TWICE, that also debuted under another big 3 company, found similar success to BLACKPINK, and debuted only a year prior, recently renewed their contracts with their respective company - if they had disbanded, they would’ve disbanded with about 150 songs under their belt. Only until recently has YG Entertainment allowed them to have some input, after many complaints from the fans and probably the members themselves. 4 - BEKUM BOOM. This is the person I have the most beef with within BLACKPINK’s team. She’s a singer and songwriter and is responsible for the annoying and constant incorrect use of AAVE you hear in all of BLACKPINK’s songs. She has been working with YG Entertainment since the group’s debut I think? She’s not Korean… she’s not black either! She’s a white girl from Orange County, California, and her name is Rebecca. She has some solo music and the lyrics are pretty much the same narcissistic “I’m such a baddie” lyrics she writes for BLACKPINK. Her (annoying) voice technique is also very similar to the voice the rapper of the group does in every song so I’m assuming she’s probably responsible for that as well. She’s very much a culture vulture. That’s all I guess? To make a long story short, BLACKPINK have very little input in their music, their label is outdated and unwilling to let go of their golden years from the early 2010s, and since BLACKPINK are the moneymakers they won’t ever change their sound, because playing safe still pays the bills. And because of that, BLACKPINK will never reach their full potential. BLACKPINK discography standouts I recommend: *Whistle*, Playing With Fire, *Pretty Savage*, *Sour Candy* (it’s a Lady Gaga song and they were featured on it), See U Later. I really recommend member Rosé’s solo work, specially the b-side “Gone” - which she wanted to have as main single, but the company needed her to go EDM with that, despite Rosé being a more indie ‘bananies and avacadie’ type of artist. Rosé wrote both of the songs on her solo single album.
The same YG that made 2NE1 and BIGBANG??? How are their 2010s EDM songs sound more timeless than their current one 😩 truly hate how samey all BLACKPINK songs are
@@catloaff yes! My guess is probably because Teddy actually used put a little soul into it back then 😭 I genuinely feel like the man got overworked and reached his creative peak or hit a block. And YG got stuck in time, feels like they’re struggling to admit they’re not a top label anymore and artistically wise they’ve been surpassed by a bunch of mid-tier k-pop labels that put out much better music despite not having nearly half their budget and capital. So they just hold on to what they think made/makes them great, while the rest of the industry moves on. It’s sad to watch because they used to be the vanguard of the industry and started many trends. Truly the fall of a giant

@@NYCTO7 maybe not all. There are a lot of that just stay behind and let the music do its thing, though there are a lot (especially the twitter ones) that can't stfu and feel entitled to their favs for no reason.
These songs by BlackPink are talking about how good their lives are and everyone wants to be them. Sadly though, being big in the KPop industry means you lead a highly scrutinized life. KPop stans can turn on you and bully you relentlessly just for dating certain people (or even dating at all because they often have to play into being the dream romantic partner for fans) doing anything perceived as actually bad by fans (not the sort of "toughness" or "badness" they say they have in their songs), or even just not fitting certain beauty standards. Seeing the line, "'Cause no-one's keeping tally, I do what I want with who I like" on the song Tally is sad.
Not to be like "stan Loona" but Loona genuinely got a great discography with amazing choreography. The ODD EYE CIRCLE subunit tracks, the XX album, recent releases like Why Not, Hula Hoop are so amazing
Dreamcatcher is a good group to listen to. The songs all have meaning and recently they are in the Apocalypse era. They speak on heavy topics and the songs are pretty nice. Even as an InSomnia, I would love to hear your take on them, good or bad. They way you talk about music is fascinating to me. Probably the full honesty. I think something else to bring up is that the girls have stated they wanted different things. I believe, and please any blinks let me know if I'm wrong, Jisoo wanted to be an actress, Jennie wanted to be a model, Lisa wanted to be a choreographer or backup dancer, and I believe Rose is the only one who really wanted to be in the music industry. It doesn't help that the girls have already shown that they are limited. Jennie's lyric book was stolen after she showed it on a VLive which is weird since the book never left their dorm. Also, people don't realize that these 'bad bitches' aren't what you want to be, but many people desire it, like teenagers and young adults. It's a corporate sound that most don't realize its the same over and over.
I think the best part of Dreamcatcher songs most of the time are the songwriting and execution defo, Leez and Ollounder do great, and I think the timbre and styles of the individual members work out well in the songs
There's a lot of interesting kpop music when the members are involved in the writing (BTS, Stray Kids, Ateez...) or when the concept is cool (Kingdom comes to mind). This is obviously not the case for Blackpink, which I regret because most of the members can write songs, and the concept has been "I'm rich and you suck" for years so, meh. Please don't judge kpop through Blackpink because it's a depressing example, their producer Teddy can't stop grabbing one Indian-sounding sample from the KSHMR collection and adding "boom boom boom" over it or some shit. It's catastrophic and a special occurrence
I realised typing this that most people have zero idea who Kingdom are lol: if you'd like to see whatever the hell a group pretending to be centuries ago looks like, in either beautiful Korean costumes or Arthurian knight clothes, go check them and don't look back
I think the biggest issue stems from the fact that blackpink is highly over praised strictly because they are the "most popular girl group in the world" which to a degree that isn't a lie, though that still doesn't mean their music is necessarily good. The biggest issue I've always had with blackpink is the lack of diversity in their music. The generic indian samples, the misused aave, the random lyrics and the terrible rapping (in their earlier music), just makes them a mid group all together
Hi Brad this might be an interesting video idea: earlier today I stumbled across a remix of SAIL by AWOLNATION that featured Kendrick Lamar & Ab-Soul, it makes absolutely no sense why they'd be on a remix to that song, but it had a kind of hilarious charm listening to it. Maybe you should do a video where you react to some batshit insane remixes that not a lot of people know about?

I personally found their debut album kinda fun and charming, but this album was not my thing. I kinda knew with pink venom being the lead single I wasn’t going to enjoy it, but I was still disappointed because they have made plenty of songs in the past that I have enjoyed. Love Sick Girls is actually the first song (I believe) that is written by the members, Jennie and Jisoo. They debuted in 2016 and it took them until 2020 to finally be able to write (1) song. Rose did wrote her solo songs “on the ground” & “gone” in 2021. It’s not like they don’t want to write their own music, it’s just their company literally won’t allow them. A singer from their company Lee Hi had to beg the ceo to allow her to make music after years of nothing. She was able to finally release an album under a subsidiary label. Thankfully she left and joined a new company 🎉.
Your critisism on the songs is definetly valid. I used to be into Blackpink, but all the songs to me felt like they had no personality in it at all. I still check out each song hoping for something to actually feel genuine, but sadly none do so far (except for their balad Hope Not from 2 releases ago) BUT, if you do want to hear more kpop (since not everything like this feels as fake) I'd recommend Dreamcatcher which is a kpop rock girl group. Or Loona, which is a "regular" kpop girl group, but their message is more about unity and being yourself. The best kpop when you're looking genuine feelings and personality in the songs, is when artists write or produce themselves. Again I wanna mention Dreamcatcher, and Stray Kids (although they mostly produce and their lyrics tend to fit in the flexing style more)
Also I wanna add to NOT react to New Jeans like a lot of people in the chat were spamming. It's a group where EVERY member is under 18, making songs as sexual as Ice Cream by Blackpink (but about Cookies...). Not to mention their creative director is a known child predator and every cent of income they get or exposure (that leads to others checking them out) leads to the child predator being able to exploit the group more
blackpink have always felt more like a group of models who happen to release music every couple years than a real band… i know it’s a long shot but if you’re interested in some good kpop i would recommend loona’s older stuff (wide variety of genres, my personal faves are girl front, love4eva, eclipse, every day i love you, wow, rosy, heart attack). i also like tomorrow by together (lover = loser, i know i love you, fairy of shampoo, crown, cat & dog) (only listen to cat & dog if you’re feeling a bit sillay…)
10:13 that's because two of the members come from extremely wealthy families and none of them are from the hood LMAO it's meaningless in terms of authenticity, but i dont think it's ever supposed to be authentic. it's just a stylish facade for them. they're playing characters, in other words. KPOP as a whole is just a really intricate, grueling, human rights violating game of roleplay.
They don't seem to understand how to structure bars in english to create a nice flow word wise and then say those words in a way that flows well. That's what makes rap work and that's completely devoid here
Blackpink is an act that exists. They're made up of several girls, and they write music with production, and vocals, and lyrics, that appeal to a certain demographic of people. Their music is an existing level of quality either high and low, and this album is full of Blackpink songs that exist and are music. There is a certain number of songs in this album, and they are songs that exist. This is an album that exists from an act that exists. 🗿/10, listen to Tai Verdes' new album. That last part isn't a joke, listen to Tai Verdes' new album.
brad, as a kpop stan/enjoyer, just know that the ones of us who arent diehard blackpink stans all think the majority of their music is red headphones too 💀 if you're looking for some cool kpop girl groups to check out, please give Aespa, Billlie, Dreamcatcher, or even Twice a listen. leaps and bounds ahead of the garbage that blackpink churns out every other year.
No literally lmao. Aespa, dreamcatcher, billie, twice, gidle, apink, nmixx, itzy, newjeans (those groups alone), tops any bblackpink song/comeback in a heartbeat. They make the most commerical sounding music I've ever heard and most of its Teddy's fault.
This is homeopathic pop. Pop that has been diluted so many times over that it only has the essence -the “memory” - of actual artistry, but not a single atom of it remains.
Interesting that you thought Lovesick Girls is their best song (comparatively) because they actually participated in its writing. But it wasn't as successful as their other songs, and I think that's why we haven't seen more vulnerability from them.
For girl groups I really like The Grace,Kara,9muses,Red Velvet and Mamamoo. I'll even add pre-debut LOONA. To me,BlackPink only had one good song,Playing With Fire.
@@nesta_ch One of the biggest slanders I hear about kpop is that the idols can't sing and I'm honestly exhausted. The amount of times I have brought up Mamamoo. Their company should be paying me.

Brad, please listen to Perfume, a Jpop girl group. They are one of the few examples that show how a corporate, million-dollar group can be artistic, inventive, and doesn't sound too corporate-ish. You can start with their new album "PLASMA" or new songs like Polygon Wave(the Original Mix), Spinning World or their older song like FLASH.
Just found your channel not to long ago and I am in love with them. Always a great watch no matter the topic. I have a request for you Brad, can you rank or go over the “i’m the shit” lines in songs. You can rank them from Clean to Crappy if you’d like but I think that there are so many of those bars that it’s crazy. Keep up the great work Brad!
tbh i feel like a kpop group that is probably much like BLACKPINK in the “corporate-cut, almost generic” way but does it with their own distinct style and sound is TWICE. imo, they’ve been pretty consistent with perfecting that recognizable kpop sounding sound but while also twisting the formula to make it just that much more enjoyable. it’d be interesting to see ur reaction to them after hearing blackpink’s last two projects.
Totally agree. I really love how members of TWICE (Chae, Jihyo, Dahyun) were so involved with the songwriting on their newest project. I think it shows, in a good way.
@@adl1578 exactly! which also adds a little more genuineness to their music compared to other girl groups (especially with how little girl groups get a chance to be involved in their music, period)
what distinct style and sound??? lmfaoooo .. if you ask koreans which group has more generic sounding music - twice or blackpink - they're all gonna pick twice. twice is THE embodiment of feminine gender norms in korea 💀 and their music isnt any more sophisticated than bp's
@@lunali7209 no, but the idols actually have involvement in the projects and aren’t trying to seem authentic, edgy or hashtag girlboss when they aren’t. Twice has interesting concepts that aren’t all girl crush flexing and it’s kind of weird to dumb all that down just because twice follow gender norms (which all K-pop idols do including blackpink, they just pretend not to in the English parts of their songs).
Despite me being a blink (what they call their fans), one of the reasons why i think the company never bother to switch it up is because other blinks still eat it up regardless. I mean, you can be a fan but still be critical of their work. My personal favourite is Rosé as everytime she sing songs other than their discography, you can feel her passion to give the song/s justice and heart. Which is why i dont mind if they disband as it seems that they'll be fine regardless. Plus they have paths i see them in. Brad covering K-pop is a crossover I never thought would happen, but I don't mind it at all haha Btw as a huge k-pop enjoyed, I think you would enjoy Dreamcatcher. Their music is more into the rock genre and it's pretty unique in the K-pop sphere. I also LOVE Stray Kids, though I know not everyone's a fan of their music, but hey, you might give it a go if you want haha
The moment I saw your livestream I just said to myself, "Oh no" 😂 But seriously, I just felt bad for them because of their producers, but that's how they sell and appeal to their target audience I guess. They are good performers as well. Whistle and Playing with Fire would still be the only Blackpink songs that I could really enjoy myself into.
@@frackingfluidinjection well I think the main culprit here would be their entertainment company (YG ent) for this. They could have hired more producers outside their in-house brand but no. They rigorously trained these girls for more or less five to seven years but these are the songs they get
@@frackingfluidinjection tbh i find funny how every fan of them know they don't really write or compose anything, sell.millions cause some corporate hack knows how to cater teenagers and thats the reason of their success but suddenly the performers are artistic diamonds that are just so opressed by corporate overlords they can't show their real talent, i guess if those people think the same of every western corporate pop artist, they just Say "this guy suck, he don't write anything by himself, the producer it's the Mastermind" but with kpop stans it's "this people that havent wrote anything by themselves and gained millions of fans singing and dancing other people lyrics and coreography sure are real talents, the producers are just hacks"
After listening to Blackpink on and off occasionally. Whistle is the only song that I feel is listenable way past their time. Everything else is just forgotten in my brain but not Whistle. That anti-drop also helped a lot to make the song unique and memorable
Was hesitant about listening to this album. peeped their pre-release live stream and all they were doing was banging those heart gavels. they seem soo bored with music now. glad brads here to translate all the English "hood" lyrics into perfect Korean for us.
It honestly feels like they are done with YG. As a fan I hope that they disband and get as far away from Jim as possible even if they never put out another song again.
This sounds like Korea is taking the most popular pop and hiphop formulas and making beats based on those. And then the lyrics interpolating from rappers like Biggie. But it makes sense, this makes money, because its a conglomerate of all the best selling attributes of music right now.
Kind of kpop does take alot from western pop trends (we had so many retro songs when it was trendy my God), but YG (their company) thinks of itself as a hiphop company hence this mess.
Yo brad, I know you come from a hip hop background, as do I. I will say one of the few kpop groups I enjoy are stray kids, they have imo some of the best rappers in kpop. I think if you're going into kpop with a predesposed belief that you can't overlook that it's all corporate manufactured and tailored, and not meet the music at its own level, you're always going to end up not enjoying it because all you'll see will affirm that. It's sort of the same as people who constantly worry about industry plants, they never enjoy the music produced solely because they've got the preconcieved notion that the music can't be enjoyed because it comes from the "industry". For the longest time I wasn't able to look past that myself, but when I did I think I started appreciating kpop songs a lot more in their ownright. Ofc the industry isn't good or really even a nice thing, but it's a major avenue to create music in the world we live in and I'm not quite willing to discount the music entirely due to that. Edit: Should say I'm still not really a fan of Black Pink specifically, but I was touching upon points I felt like are being echoed more broadly at kpop rn.
@@blasemusha4001 It can be, but I'd argue we readily manage to do it with a lot of western music that's made by big labels. Sure not everyone, but at that point the problem is just simply that kpop is a subgenre of pop.
@@AnastasiaThemis Personally I find the fact that there are labels taking literal children and having them train to debut in a group feels a bit worse. Those people are so easily discarded by the labels if they can't generate enough hype or fans. I know Western music labels do bad stuff to musicians and groups a lot, but there's not quite the industry of training teens to churn out groups who hopefully make it big.
Since you're reacting on kpop now i kinda want to see you react to some jpop/jrock stuffs like "Yorushika". the lyrics are profound but you don't really have to read translations to enjoy the entire thing, just listening to instrumentals already gives some kind of feeling.
to be honest 99% of kpop fans love these so called 'idols' because of their looks and fashion and that's actually how these korean entertainment pick them to be in a group. Most of them doesn't even care about making music they just wanna be famous and that's it. Blackpink is just a perfect example of this thats why u never take kpop seriously lol
@@vivilover9409 can You name some of those please? Cause everything ive listened labelled as kpop sounds awfully similar to this so, i would like to try some kpop that doesnt sound generic and souless but i'm not versed in the genre to easily find them
@@diegosotomiranda4107 I feel like yall are definitely the types to WANT to think it's generic and soulless. Even fantano doesn't go this hard on kpop but for some reason Brad's audience goes along with his word as the gospel lol. but ok. also it would be easier to start with this, what HAVE you heard? Artists and songs? A lot of people will hear bp and bts English songs and then declare everything as soulless trash. I don't care for bp, but even with bts they have really great older music before they got as big as they are now. IU - I'd recommend the whole Modern times epilogue album as well as chat shire and palette. Really a lot of her later albums are fantastic (the ones where she was writing the songs either in part or entirely on her own, so Modern times and onwards). She has a great voice for ballads too. Her songs Through The Night, My Sea, Above the time, Empty Cup and Love Poem are particularly beautiful. Jonghyun - Literally has some of the best music ever imo one of my favorite artists of all time. His albums story op 1 and 2 are very beautiful lyrically and sonically, and for something more upbeat try She Is, Base or Poet | Artist which are also all fantastic. SHINee - the group Jonghyun is in, he wrote songs for them sometimes but typically the group music from artists is going to be more "commercial" and less personal. Still they have a diverse discography. Having been in the industry for nearly 15 years they have done all kinds of genres and have amazing vocals all around. Even if you dont care for the lyrics, the performances should feel passionate enough to not be "soulless," to you. Since they're really diverse its hard to say where to start but some of my favorite albums are The Misconceptions of Us, 1 of 1, Odd, and The Story of Light - Epilogue. Twice - Often seen as generic or whatever but their music is fantastically made pop music that shouldn't be written off just because it's in Korean. My favorite albums of theirs are Feel Special, Eyes Wide Open, Twicetagram. Their newest bum Between 1&2 is also really good. Some highlight songs from their catalog are Three Times A Day, Rainbow, Love Line, You in my Heart, Missing U, One in a Million, Up No More, Say Something, 21:29, Love Foolish, Sunset, Say you love me, After Moon, Jaljayo Good Night and too many more to count. This isn't even counting their singles, this is just my personal favorites. - Mamamoo - Amazing vocals and you'll love them if you like R&B or jazz sounds a lot and ballads too. Favorite songs include Mr Ambiguous, Better, Ten Night, 4x4ever, LIEC, Diamond, No more drama, Wind Flower, Where are u, Bad Bye, Um oh ah yeh, Egotistic, Rainy Season, Midnight summer dream, Freakin Shoes, Yes I am, Decalcomanie, Starry night, be calm, Hello (Solar solo), 25, Words don't come easy, I miss you. Reality in BLACK is my favorite of their albums but I think that they have a lot of individually strong songs - Red Velvet - Diverse but consistent is the usual case for SM artists and RV are no exception. Their albums The Red and The Perfect Red Velvet are my personal favorites. - Nct 127 - interesting production especially on their singles and safer bsides often leaning into rnb and dance. My fave album is Neo Zone but I also think that all of their singles/title tracks should be checked out as a proper introduction to what they're all about as a group - Loona - Their music is very diverse and forward thinking in the production department. Odd eye circle are often thought of as the favorite. Their solo songs are fantastic as well. Some songs to check out are New, d-1, Egoist, Heat, butterfly, where you at, Sweet Crazy Love, Girl Front, Twilight, Eclipse, Singing in the rain, Love letter, Stylish, Number 1, 365, Fall Again, Pale Blue Dot, Universe, Oh Yes I Am, Rain51db, Sonatine, Let me in, Around you... Again too many to name. They are kind of the token favorite of online music communities like RateYourMusic so they might be up your alley. If I had to say just a few artists to pick, try IU and Jonghyun first.

Honestly if you want k pop songs that don't have like 20 producers or aren't really written just to sell, then your best bet is (g)-idle for girls and stray kids for guys. For idle most of their song are written and produced by their leader and main raper soyeon that ones that aren't, are still done by other members , they also choose basically everything, like the concept clothing when they want to release music and so on. The "me three" line probably means "you wanna be me? So would I if I were you." So it's like you wanna be me too (two) well so would I (turning that two into three). I'm no Black Pink-ologist but I think that's what it is
@@RD-oo6yq maybe an example would help. Let's say a friend asks the group chat if they wanted to hangout at six flags. Let's also say that the first person to respond said yea sure. @@Kalitayy the thing is kpop fans know about this stuff more than anyone else and talk about it constantly. The difference is we discuss it with the nuance of
1. Western media often depicts these issues without nuance or cultural sensitivity and can distort things to make things worse than they are

Hey Brad! 💚 I don’t know if you care about any of this, but I’ll give you a few key reasons as to why BLACKPINK’s music is the way that it is, from someone who used to be a fan. A little r/HobbyDrama moment on your comment section:
1 - BLACKPINK debuted under a company called YG Entertainment, which was founded by a member of one of the first and biggest k-pop groups back in the 90s, responsible for popularizing hip-hop’s sound in South Korea. This shows in YG Entertainment’s repertoire, they’re one of the big 3 companies in the k-pop industry, and their signature style is usually hip-hop. Problematic, caricature-ish, appropriating hip-hop… but hip-hop 🙂
2 - What BLACKPINK do in k-pop is considered “girl crush”.
Now I have more reason to hate this band besides my friend annoying me to listen to them lol. I will check out Rose's solo work tho.

Paint The Town sucks balls tho sadly...

Indian sample? I tried looking it up but nothing helped
bruh thank you Teddy has one idea and has rehashed 800 times

I still check out each song hoping for something to actually feel genuine, but sadly none do so far (except for their balad Hope Not from 2 releases ago)
BUT, if you do want to hear more kpop (since not everything like this feels as fake) I'd recommend Dreamcatcher which is a kpop rock girl group.
Not to mention their creative director is a known child predator and every cent of income they get or exposure (that leads to others checking them out) leads to the child predator being able to exploit the group more
@Mathilde yeah when I heard the lyrics about coming over from a teen voice just felt weird
blackpink have always felt more like a group of models who happen to release music every couple years than a real band… i know it’s a long shot but if you’re interested in some good kpop i would recommend loona’s older stuff (wide variety of genres, my personal faves are girl front, love4eva, eclipse, every day i love you, wow, rosy, heart attack). i also like tomorrow by together (lover = loser, i know i love you, fairy of shampoo, crown, cat & dog) (only listen to cat & dog if you’re feeling a bit sillay…)

Despite me being a blink (what they call their fans), one of the reasons why i think the company never bother to switch it up is because other blinks still eat it up regardless.

Reality in BLACK is my favorite of their albums but I think that they have a lot of individually strong songs
- Red Velvet - Diverse but consistent is the usual case for SM artists and RV are no exception. Their albums The Red and The Perfect Red Velvet are my personal favorites.
- Nct 127 - interesting production especially on their singles and safer bsides often leaning into rnb and dance. My fave album is Neo Zone but I also think that all of their singles/title tracks should be checked out as a proper introduction to what they're all about as a group
- Loona - Their music is very diverse and forward thinking in the production department.
If I had to say just a few artists to pick, try IU and Jonghyun first.
id really be interested in seeing brad listen to one of stray kids albums since they produce and write most of(all of when it comes to writing) their songs. im really excited though to see him starting to listen to and give his opinions on kpop since most of it IS heavily produced. for myself i think its the live performances and group content that i really enjoy. keep it up though brad!! ^.^
You really need to listen to that BewhY album “The Movie Star” I sent songs for on stream. That’s an occation where Korean Hip Hop sounds like actual music rather than a product
Ok, now I need a reaction to BTS’s “Wings” album just to see the whiplash from this
Bts is just as corporate as blackpink please
Brad you gotta react to some good quality K-pop!!!! Love yourself tear and formula of love by twice are amazing albums. Listen. Now.
You would definitely enjoy bts more I can safely say, they at least write compose and produce all of their own stuff and actually are into the music they make 😭
well that's what they want you to believe
it's all the same thing
@@Adizero2 well no because they literally legally can’t lie about that goofy, three of the members have over 100 credits of the Korea copyright association 😭
all brad knows is butter and dynamite, which the members obviously didn't write, so of course it's some of their worst and overtuned popular songs 😭
@@vynmo6114 Yess it’s so annoying when people stereotype them from their English songs and don’t even give the other stuff a chance😭
@@Adizero2 Uh no unfortunately its not. They are certified members of the Korean Music Copyright association and have solo mixtapes and were underground rappers before being in BTS. Can't be an underground rapper if you dont write ur own shit.
Nah Barnard gotten cancel by the Twitter people 😭😭😭
aw hell na Narbard haste in musik done squabbled and quarreled with the kpop stans! This will surely not be good for the BArt taste in humans. !‼‼❗
They already have your address and your loved one’s location of residence
It’s over 💀
They're going to absolutely destroy him by posting screenshots of his videos and talking about how ugly he is 😔😔😔 (idk at least that feels like what defensive, rabid kpop stans would do, go straight for the shallowest insult that have nothing to do with the critique)
@@miseryfell6417 maybe the ones on twitter, this comment section kinda chillin
the way this still hasnt happened lmfaooo .. yalls hatred towards kpop fans is embarrassing
I like your genuine honesty dude. Blackpink is actually a talented and beautiful ladies and they don't actually need to exploit their bodies just to be marketable to the Western Market. Each people have their own taste in music, other people do not like their music while some other people really like it.
Big kpop fan here and BP is one of the more controversial groups because they're liked by the general audience but a big percentage of kpop listeners don't like their music, especially the newer songs. I'd recommend LOONA, TWICE and Red Velvet as the music community approved kpop.
Highly recommended dpr ian, don't know if it counts as kpop but hes so good
Honestly if you want k pop songs that don't have like 20 producers or aren't really written just to sell, then your best bet is (g)-idle for girls and stray kids for guys. For idle most of their song are written and produced by their leader and main raper soyeon that ones that aren't, are still done by other members , they also choose basically everything, like the concept clothing when they want to release music and so on. Stray kids has 3 members which produce all their songs and a few more who also write lyrics. Also fun fact they had a skit on a show on TV in which they had a board that said their ceo is stupid😂
this is my first time giving this album a listen, I only heard halfway through Pink Venom and I quit. I'm so glad I have Brad's commentary 😭
As a kpop fan I agree that BLACKPINK's music is usually not it. But Sticker? Come on now, that ear rape is a whole vibe.
Brad's gonna combust when he listens to 127's discography
@@nut311aman a lot of 127's bsides are just regular rnb or ballads .. maybe just a few songs that are noise music and yeah the tt is always noise music cause its their brand
definitely a weird corporate manufactured pop movement. sounds really catchy production is good but yeah, hard to get behind it. remember malice mizer and der en gray? or mo one remembers the jrock and jpop movement back in early 2000s.
also the pink venom song remedied me of mindless self indulgence - bring the pain. sounds great but lyrics are a cringe. make my butt clench
I feel like Blackpink is the quintessential manufactured kpop group. There’s so many groups that feel genuine….Blackpink’s not one of them for me
I dont know why but you should try to listen to Jack in the Box from j-hope :D some of these have nice beats It's definitely better than this, even though I have nothing against BlackPink, just not my music
brad u gotta listen to bts but not their english singles or crossover collabs but an actual full album like ly tear or even an hyyh mini album like please😭😭
Yessss
You've never heard anyone say "Me three"? Like people volunteering, it'd be like...
Person 1: Me
Person 2: Me, too!
Person 3: Me, three!
It's a play on "me, too". It's a language pun, and I've heard people do this since I was a kid. lol
So based on the context, there are 2 "wannabes that Wanna be me"?
Theres plenty of great kpop out there you dont need to waste your time on blackpink
Okay this video has given me the courage to finally comment this. Brad I've been watching your channel since you put out your first twenty one pilots video haha and I love your channel. Since I see you're open to one popular Korean group would you be open to reviewing BTS? They have been my favorite kpop music group since 2017 and I've been wondering for a hot minute if you would ever give them a listen and an honest review of their music. I love their albums Love Yourself: Tear, Skool Luv Affair, and Map Of The Soul: 7. I know you'd probably get hate but that's normal and the fans would honestly enjoy your criticism. I know I have for years so... what do you think? Maybe I can pop in on a stream and request but either way I really hope you'd give them a try!
Its so weird , how is nobody suggesting BTS to him?
NOOOO NOT THE STICKER SLANDER😭
brad you’d like the kpop girlgroup ‘TWICE’ more. they are very enjoyable and have great songs. do a reaction stream on them too😢 i suggest the album “eyes wide open” or “formula of love” by them. but if you want something shorter then i suggest the “Feel Special” album or “Taste of Love”
I'm not a KPOP fan, but I've listened to some of TWICE's stuff, and they're not bad.
@@jeremyusreevu237 they’re great and have explored many genres! they make any sound work
@@jeremyusreevu237 Stamped and approved by the king himself, Jeremy.
Yeah Twice makes fantastic music. I heard "Fancy" one time and immediately checked out their whole discography just cause that song was so good. I hope Brad reacts to them one day I think he'd like them
@@alecisshady Fancy was what got me into TWICE too! Such a fun and amazing track.
If stan twitter finds this, you are over💀💀
It's going to be hell for Brad using personal preferences to judge other people's songs.
Why does blackpink's music sounds a lot worse when u just hear it like that than when u watch the music video that goes along with it ? Now i get why they have so many views, it seems that the music completely loses its spark when u listen to it than when you look at it
Yep, the same happened to me with most kpop, and with western artist that happened to My with this is América by childish gambino
The "me three" line probably means "you wanna be me? So would I if I were you." So it's like you wanna be me too (two) well so would I (turning that two into three). I'm no Black Pink-ologist but I think that's what it is
idk why that line is so hard for people to understand lmao
@@aimee-hyj because it doesn't make any sense
@@RD-oo6yq maybe an example would help. Let's say a friend asks the group chat if they wanted to hangout at six flags. Let's also say that the first person to respond said yea sure. The second person says "me too". Then the third person says "me three". Now Jennie says "a bunch of wannabes that want to be me" all those people would love to be old girl. Then she says "me three if I was you" instead of being the Seco d person to want to be her she is the third but only if she was you. I mean it's not that hard of a concept to grasp, you would be lost if you ever listened to real rap.
@@meashafong883 put it perfectly
@@meashafong883 I listen to real rap, this isn't real rap. The way its written and delivered makes it fall flat. If you have to explain this basic ass bar to anyone, it meant the bar didn't work.
Heard u come from a hip hop background, heres a rundown of the top sort of rappers/groups in kpop who write their own stuff and are technically proficient rappers. Stray Kids Any or We Go if you want cypher rap type vibes. BTS Cypher Pt 2 again hard hitting cypher. Ikon ryhthm ta some more hip-hop influence but less heavy on the rap style more of a hip hop vibe. If you want some of the best rappers in kpop groups gone solo to spit some heat then Zico from Block b listen to his track "No you can't" theres a dingo live performance, hes widely considered the strongest kpop rapper, also Bobby from iKon - U MAD? or HOL UP, other top rappers include RM from BTS - try Joke or Do you, he also did a track with Wale called Change, Suga from BTS too, try "Agust D" or "The Last".
you’re a liar
Blackpink's music from their debut on until they release Kill This Love EP is soooo much better than what they release from that point afterwards (so, 'The Album' and Born Pink)
About blackpink, honestly I'm probably one of the biggest fans of them that has seen this video from what I saw in the comments 😂😂, but while I do kinda like this album I do feel like the girls might have been a bit annoyed with the agency because they didn't let them write or produce not even as much as on the last album and they also only got 8 songs after 2 years when they also had 8 songs so those things together probably made them less excited about this new album. One of the members had like a really long message about how happy and excited she was about the last album at that time and this time she didn't put any caption so yeah
you should listen to jack in the box by j-hope it's a really good album
React to stray kids if you can.
Miroh.
God's menu.
Thunderous.
Side effects.
Maniac.
Ddaeng
We go
Maze of memories
Hero's soup
Chronosaurus
Red lights
Secret secret
Domino.
You can react to their album noeasy which is a masterpiece or their recent mini album oddinary.
They are also coming back this Oct 7 with a new mini album Maxident. 🙏🏾
Them and BTS are some of the few artist who have 100% control of their creative process.
i hate that blackpink is so popular when there are so many better kpop groups who make way better and more interesting stuff
Gotta hear some other Korean stuff by Seotaiji and boys (or just seo taiji) some stuff by Jonghyun, also stuff by gdragon and top, some CL and some zico ! I'm not much into this stuff anymore but all these artists I still listen to even after I fell out of kpop
