the dealbreaker with me, for every single one of these monitors, is lack of proper resolution for mac. we neeeeed a third party 220ppi monitor so bad, or for apple to do what windows has been doing for decades and make their UI actually scaleable, and not just based on a factor of 110/220ppi. we have fewer 220ppi options now than we did years ago, which is just insane. as a designer this makes my search for a monitor incredibly frustrating, as i need to be sure that what I am seeing on the screen is accurate, and non-integer scaling destroys any confidence i have in a monitor-industrial design, color, connectivity, size/resolution be damned. this would possibly be enough to force me to windows, except windows does not have gpu acceleration support in indesign like mac does, which is also insane!

@@anaszahiri8116 The reason I don’t give a solution as you suggest is because I do not have one, I am not a display manufacturer. If you want 220ppi your best options are LG 5k ultrafine, Apple Studio Display, Pro Display XDR, LG 4K 21” ultrafine. There are some others that were released at one point or another but are not easy to get for cheap. Keep in mind my use case is very very specific, and 99% of users do not need the accuracy that I need, which is precisely why there are not a whole lot of monitors with this resolution out there, and the ones that are are very expensive.

The only answer is probably but maybe not, depending on the user. Recently I’ve been surprised to read a few users talking about going Mac>4K with no scaling. Was surprised because in months of observing I’d never seen that before. However, it does show that for a few people, that allegedly works. What I’m used to reading and seeing is that without scaling, Mac>4k 27” yields text and images that are far to tiny to work with, and scaling is necessary. I know that scaling would be necc for me, just based on video recorded examples I’ve seen in presentations. I’ve read and seen a number of times users using native 27” 4K and then placing their face within a few inches of the screen. Painful to watch but whatever works for them. FWIIW YMMV and there are a lot of videos on this platform that focus on the subject of 4K scaling from a Mac with video recorded examples of images and text at various levels of scaling.

If someone asked me “why they should use a second display” I could stop right there, offering only the one reason.

Be aware! These BenQ monitors have only 250-300nits of brightness. This is ok only if you work in a dark room or sit with curtains closed all day.
In all other cases, they are unusable. Apple displays have 500nits and it's a night and day difference.
My advice: do not buy these BenQ monitors until you are 100% sure that you don't need brightness.
To get a feel of how it would look compared to a MacBook Pro, you can set MacBook's brightness to 50-60% and this is basically how this monitor looks at the max brightness.

BenQ have done a pretty good job with the PD line monitors, specially for the price compare to SW line. My only complaint is that, they advertise this monitor the same es the predecessor of it, the PD2720U. If the this monitor is using the same panel as the 2720U than it does not cover 95% DCI-P. The PD2720U is a GBLED panel not a WLED PFS. GBLED would not cover 95% DCI-P I have Donetsk many different calibration and settings on my PD2720 and would not reach. Overall the monitor color are superb for its trier, I’m very happy with it even though I’m using it as a second monitor.

Having just purchased, spent hours fiddling with and then returning a BenQ production monitor, said to be Mac compatible, and having watched BenQ waffle and change w/re to models X and Mac compatibility, I don’t feel secure enough to take that plunge again. They put stuff out there and then they change. Right after I got the BenQ, I went to support.benq only see a large font paragraph alert saying that the monitor I purchased was suddenly no longer compatible with Mac m series machines. The large bold font alert nature of this told me that previously the monitor was comparable. BenQ implied that Apple was the problem. I have no idea, and when I looked again last night, the big alert paragraph was gone, replaced with a note saying hdmi would not function of the monitor was match with an m1. They’re all over the place, for me ut was impossible to get customer support, and although I wish the monitor had worked out, I have no time to invest in free beta testing for BenQ. Firmware has been reported to be a big issue too, fwiiw.

Hi! I hear 4k monitors has some scaling issues with MacBooks. Aka, if you dont run it in native resolutions, it will be a heavy resource hog. Thats also why Apple themself made a 5k monitor, and not a 4k. So technically you want 5k or half of that, the 1440p to run native resolutions/scaling. Does the Mac mode on this go around this? I dont fully understand it but theres only 2 out of the display settings you actually want to use, the ones in between will use way more resoursces.

    • @ilmighelo
      @ilmighelo Рік тому

Hi Kennet, I don't think that the Mac mode can override the scaling problem, and yes, I confirm that is a very performance hog. On my company Macbook (an i9 with rx460) I can't run it in scaled mode and when it works, I encounter many glitches due to the massive GPU usage. Another thing you have to consider is to use only DP connections, as HDMI doesn't have enough bandwidth to deliver a 4:4:4 RGB signal, and it results in a 4:2:0 signal, with pixeled reds. If you have an M1 I would consider it, but with an Intel Mac... I would pass.

Not sure how this beats out the LG ultra fine monitors. Similar color, USBC /thunderbolt connector that drive the monitor, other usb connectors on the monitor, AND charges your laptop with 96 watts means you just need one connection.

    • @BetterCreating

I hear you - I personally found the bases of the LGs to be more annoying due to those curved feet - at least with this one you can put things on the base for this one. But have to say those ergo arms look great. Agree - 96watts on LG is better than 65watts on BenQ but if left plugged in - no huge difference really and both still just need a single connection. The thickness of the monitor for me is not an issue when the design is so good and mostly seen from the front. Must go find a good screen as soon as possible, only got an iMac 27 inch from 2010 now with a dusty like barcode crossing the whole screen after the lightening hit it and it crashed on the floor and so got heavy a side-bump in the bottom metal frame that look like it been through Ukraine recently, but it flow off the table when we had a lightening storm out at our island in Gotland just before the Russian airplanes illegally crossed Swedish airspace, kind of weird, perhaps the Russians hacked it so it exploded! 😳😂🤷🏼 We got NATO airplane landing and military bases just kilometers away from here! … is still running on an inserted 250 gb SSD drive by a licensed apple technician at the island 😇 but it copies automatically to its’ own hard drive which is stupid and shows it got nuts according to the technician, it has like a ghost protocol and save reminders that are deleted in icloud and elsewhere but still show up every five minutes and drives me crazy 😂 I blame the Russians due to their simultaneous hostile fly-by that day!
      😡😅🌊🛬

What resolution do you run the monitor for? Is the text crisp like a MBP?

I was wondering if I could connect 2 of these monitors together with a Mac book pro m1 max? I love having the ability to spread my workout and was wondering if I could do that here or if the monitor can’t pair with another.

Yes - you can daisy chain two of them I believe.

Have you experienced image sticking? Many users complain that if a static image is displayed on the monitor for 20 minutes or more, then it remains visible on other images for some time.

Can anyone recommend a KVM switch that will allow me to connect my M1 Mac via Thunderbolt, and my PC using Display port, to my display port monitor?

I’ve been researching 27” USB-C monitors (for use with Mac and windows), and there seems to be a general consensus that 27” 4k is not a good idea for Macs, as you end up running it in 1440p scaling mode which effects performance and (allegedly) causes artefacts. I noticed you were using this mode (I could see the performance warning on one of your screenshots). What’s your take on this? Is it a big enough issue to warrant getting a 1440p monitor instead so you can run it natively.

Ah interesting - I didn't know that - but yes - I'm using scaling. I've found the monitor to be crisp and not seen artefacts - all that said - if it would have fit I'd have gone for the 32 inch.

Same, also searching for new monitor for my m1 macbook air. To avoid problems you mention, we need 5K or 1440p(27”) display. I am correct?

@@lazdafilms I have no experience in using an external display with macos but check the link i have added above and theres is a link to an article in the description of the video. You can see a table showing which combinations are ideal for Macos. It's all about running it native or scaled as far as i understand. (but again, i am not expert in this :D)
