Absolutely love your work, and your teaching and behind the scenes instruction. Thank you for sharing God's gifts to you and your wife. Goes bless, and stay safe and well.
Holy cow! I live a few towns over from Port Jeff and know EXACTLY where u were painting this. Never saw anything like this in my neighborhood before! FANTASTIC! U r a great TEACHER in addition to a marvelous artist….not always a combination found today. Thank you for this! ❤️❤️❤️❤️👏👏👏👏
The ease with which you paint vehicles! Thank you for always sharing your knowledge of your surroundings. It's a great experience to watch you paint and learn about the subject.
Your art always fascinates me. I love to watch, how you create your paintings! And also the ending of your video is just awesome. Thank you for sharing!
This is so interesting. Everyone on You tube does a super light first wash.. then shadows.. then details. Your method for watercolor is very different. The end result even looks very different than what is typical for urban water color. I LOVE IT. Just goes to show.... There are more than 1 way to skin a cat. 🐈
So lovely to watch it all come together! I appreciate you taking the time to verbalise and share the thinking behind the colour choices - it's something that many artists do instinctively and thus can't communicate well.
James, “I want to do this quickly so I can catch the ferry back to Connecticut.” What he didn’t say, “The ferry departs in 30 minutes.” 😂 Ok, maybe not that quickly but James is such a genius that I wouldn’t be surprised! Wonderful video and I loved seeing this scene come to life on your page. Thank you so much for the generous way you share your know-how and expertise!
Love watching you paint! I struggle with being more spontaneous with my brush movements, i.e, letting it paint how it wants. This gives me many issues, and my painting ends up looking weird in some areas. Lovely to pick up some tips from you:)
Great piece of art. I appreciate the details and this painting keeps getting better every time I take a look at it. Your perspective on art is refreshing..... Thankyou for sharing ❤️YOU HAVE A great FUTURE AHEAD!
I had a look around the area on Google (street view) and wow there are so many fantastic little shops, cafes in that area to paint and draw. I know the idea is to actually get out and paint and draw in real life, but if you cant actually get there (I live in Australia) the next best thing is to draw them from Google street view !
OMG I’m from Port Jeff! I live up in Vermont now but I wish I could have been in the area. Hope the crazy Long Island drivers didn’t cramp your style while you were painting!
Incredible! Do you have a favorite brown ink you favor? I’ve been using DeAtrementis Document Brown lately and I really love it. It’s waterproof and can be diluted although I use it straight. I like it much better than a black or Gray ink when doing watercolor or gouache. Feels more natural and less graphic.
I absolutely love the effort you put into your end thanks for visiting panel. I'm very interested and excited about oil painting, though I have never picked up a brush. Do you have a step by step guide for beginners? Kindly, Rachael
Always love the videos! I noticed recently that your preferred Jack Richeson brushes have gone up in price by quite a bit. I have been searching for a shop with the 7000 series brushes available and it seems like the stock is greatly diminished, at least here in NY.
@@JamesGurney thanks for replying! I run a small business selling retail goods, so I understand that it's likely a supply issue. I hesitate to say Amazon is price gouging, but they have the sharpest increase I've seen online.
Water soluble colored pencils work nice because they don’t show through the final painting as much. Some people prefer the control of a pencil rather than a brush to start. How do you start?
Hey do you have a video on explaining that color gammet thing? I think I understand it just based on the ways you've shown the gammet with your colors. But I'm more curious lol!
Wait, you can do that?? You can just go to a library and politely ask to borrow a traffic cone? And just... put it somewhere that you want to reserve on the street? Why are we glossing over this?? Did everyone else here already know this? I didn’t know you could check out traffic cones!!
It is a story, but I forgot to film it. The library had an outdoor table with an extension cord going to it for computer users. To make sure no one tripped on the cord they marked it with two cones on the grass. I figured they wouldn't mind too much if I borrowed one for a while. The maintenance guy noticed and asked me what I was doing, and very reluctantly agreed as long as I put it back soon, which I did. Without the cone keeping the space open, the painting would have been impossible. Usually I travel with my own cones.
@@drewchamberlain9825 he said his colors won’t let him paint the dark red color because of how he CHOSE to paint it light golden. He is missing the point of realism with his fucking theoretical crap! Loved finding you here! You're so great yourself. But yep, James is the best best best! Such a lovely man.❤️

So cool to see you here on Long Island!
Make sure to stop by The Steamroom for some seafood bisque before your ferry back! :)

I think it’s crazy that you guys have all your cables up in the air like that, in England nearly all of ours are underground
You're a magician, Mr. Gurney. Thank you for taking the time and trouble to share your gifts with us mere mortals.
I am so amazed and baffled how you do it like you do! You're a God in painting

"That traffic cone I borrowed from the library". 😆
Beautiful,nice sharing friend😃✌️....
You've inspired me to take my first watercolour painting class. Watching this after my first lesson! thank you for your videos!

aw man and I'm not even on LI right now!!! enjoy Port Jeff, it's one of my favorite places to hang out :)
Great post!. I love the painting . It contains a great idea of how to move ( in 2D) to another dimension just by looking through the window.
You are an awesome artist.
your paintings are so much more beautiful than photographs, and even direct observation.
The little detail mixed with the blurred view makes it pop! Good work! 👌🏼
Wow. I wish I could be cool like you and do stuff like this outdoor.
I laughed my head off when you panned over to the traffic cone 🤣, how many times has someone done that to me?! Brilliant, Up the artists!
@4:05, you nailed those lines. Super impressive.
You are the coolest older guy on youtube. Your videos are amazing.
Didn't know you could get a traffic cone from the library. Will definitely try that next time...
Yay more watercolor!!! This was very helpful to see your process

Exactly. When I saw him freehand that at that size, I got a rush lmao.

You make it looks easy!
Just incredible, congratulations

A view finder is a great idea. I should make some of those for the sketchbooks I use.

That small SUV on the corner didn't notice it was gone, til he mentioned truck.

Good day James. You’re painting is nice. Why use a colored pencil as an underpainting?

I just searched it up and found it. Sometimes I forget how useful the internet is 🤣🤣🤣
Hey James have you ever come down to Central Texas? I see a lot of your themes in the small towns around Austin
I've been to College Station and Bryant, great sketching opportunities there.
If you dont mind me asking, but totaling all the sketchbooks you have, how much would you say you have spent on them?
Has you be countless hours or days.
Mr.James any thoughts on Arcane (tv show) artwork :)
I saw it all and loved it. I think it sets a high benchmark for design, worldbuilding, animation, and editing.
Do you think some of your color choices were affected by the red reflected light from your shirt onto your book?
Yes, I was foolish to wear a red shirt.
@@JamesGurney it looked good and was probably comfy. 😁
I noticed you use paint out of the tubes rather than in the pans. Is there a reason
Hi James! Do you by any chance plan to sell these paintings? Or do you sell any original artwork?
Not much at the moment. When I do sell something, it's usually by auction. Check out my original art blog: jamesgurneyoriginalart.blogspot.com/

The color of the building is a dark red! You are unable to see what is there! Color theory ruins perception.
