I almost got the maxstar but went with esab miniarc 161 instead and love it. Helped me pass 6g pipe test and has paid for it self a few times on side jobs

I agree with the grinder comment, you should have clean steel to run those rods, your amps are to low and your moving side to side to fast, both welds were bad

Get the grinder out and clean the metal and then do the test. Then after the welds have been made grab the grinder again and grind them out to see what your penetration looks like. This will give you a better idea of the comparative output of each machine as well as your choice of rod diameter for the weld you're making. It was a nice start for a test but you need to go a little bit further with it to get useful results.

when you get the amp right the flux should peel off with just a tap or 2 from the hammer
those welds are shit

Do you have both machines in 110v?
