This is a great channel! Back in the day when turntables got out of fashion and after spending years in the basement, countless DUAL turntables ended up in the trash because of this dissolving little piece of plastic. If only people knew about the "Steuerpimpel" (but beeing German, I don´t even know what the word pimpel means).
Ive been watching some of your nice videos on the Dual TT repairs. Good job. I completely refurbed my 1219 in Nov 2021. Its been in the family since new, 1971. With regards to the steuerpimpel, i dont think you know that it requires a grease! I didn't either until my stereo tech mentioned it to me when we were discussing it as i was helping him refurb a 1229 for a customer of his. (He has over 50 years of experience on all audio gear so it's been great learning what I can from him when I have time to hang out at his shop. He's 1 of 2 left here in Seattle with a vast breadth of knowledge and experience.) I then looked it up in the service manual. Sure enough, it calls for Alvania II grease made by Shell! It's hard to get and expensive. He recently got some OEM sryinge applicator full of it from another tech buddy of his who had an extra one from back in day!! As you can imagine, it's bit viscous so the coefficient of friction of the steuerpimpel to the paddle is perfect. That takes away any groan sound the steuerpimpel might make rubbing against the paddle, creates perfectly smooth operation and always ensures that the auto-return of the tonearm always goes exactly back to the holder, ie, doesn't fall short like it did when you first tested it. I use the synthetic grease like you have as it's just the right amount of viscosity. I use the the synthetic on all the lube points these days since it won't ever harden, it's plastic friendly, easier to clean than white lithium and easier to get. I found out it's simply silicone eletrolytic grease! The other thing you touched on was the ground feedback loop at the stylus/headshell. That is also an easy fix by simply cleaning the headshell to tonearm contacts and the individual cart pin contacts and female wire connectors.
Yeah, I found that out when I replaced the one on my 721. It's kind of a sticky type lube and you have to use just the right amount. It lasted 40 years without having to be replaced and it's worked flawlessly ever since I replace it.
Nice video mate! Enjoyed the first section on the counter weight issue. I don't know anything about turn tables, but even I was thinking there must be a screw to lock it in place. Lol
This video was the best help, after I got a Dual 626 from ebay. I made a Steuerpimpel with a 5mm Kabel-Isolierung and it works. Thank you for your help!!!!!
My gawd, it's all plastic..... being age 73 Dual were back in the day, to me , the top T'table. Near had the loose cash for one. have a '77 or so Pioneer full auto that still works fine. and recently a Thorens full auto 'just for fun'. the base is like 1 1/2 solid wood composite, like speaker boxes but twice as thick..... anyway, real good vid which is the point.
I will be happy if you answer my question. I have a Dual 621. When I start the tone arm it sometimes goes to fifth piece and start playing it there.. This does not happen evertime I start. Sometimes it starts as it should do from the firstt piece. In manuel start there is no problem. What might be the reason?
Hello! Unfortunately, my Dual 621 record player stopped halfway through one of my records and I haven't been able to turn it on since :( The strobe doesn't light up either! Is there a fuse somewhere, or did the electronics burn out? thanks!
So happy to have found this site. My 621 is doing just that and I can't wait to get it on my bench, it's been years since the auto mechanism worked properly --Steuerpimpel, who knew? My cuing lever is also malfunctioning any tips? I have about 5 turntables 2 Philips, 2 Technics and the Dual. They all have something not working properly so I'm looking forward to diving into more of your videos. Wish you were around when I was selling "hifi" back in the 'golden years.'
Thank you for your videos, great work. Can I ask you for and advice? I have dual cs 455 automatic turntable, but from a few days ago the auto start position of the tone arm is not correct. When I start the player the tone arm goes down before it reaches the LP. And of course I saw all the videos that you have shown and calibrate the phone arm few times but still I can't find the solution. Thank you, Nenad
You're the man this is so helpful! I have a 622 which looks very similar. The automatic return isnt working so im gunna try your trick with the Steuerpimpel. Another issue I'm having is the start/stop switch. Moving it to the start position with activate the motor and strobe light but as soon as the switch returns to neutral, the strobe will turn off and motor will stop again. Any ideas? Thanks again!!!
I fixed my dual, thanks a lot for the video, the cable jacket works and I adjusted it, greetings from Poland

I had forgotten about that Huey Lewis album you were playing. I'm listening to it now!
Huey Lewis "Sports", 1983.

Perfect and much easier then I thought it would be to fix the arm 😊

Thank you very much for sharing your knowledge. My DUAL CS 622 is functioning proper again 🙂
You're the man, pointing out the simple things we all don't notice or miss.
Thanks for the tip on making your own steuerpimple. I've seen others using shrink tubing to make them.
Shrink tubing doesn't last very long.
Thanks! This works for 626 of Dual 626 too

Does the plastic arm that the Steuerpimpel impenges on require grease where the Steuerpimpel contacts it? Or should it be clean and dry?
It came with grease from the factory, but I would try it dry first.

It's either the steuerpimpel or you need to find the lead-in adjustment screw. Check to see if vinylengine.com has the service manual.

Check for dried up grease on the motor activation arm.
Thanks a lot
Nice hack on the steuerpimpel.
ThenX for the Great Video. Just fixed the Problem the same way you did, fuckin shit it works!
I have 2 turntables that don't shut off. Stays on even when arm is in cradle. On is a Pioneer PL-200 , other one is Technics SL-B2. Any advice?
Check the microswitch
Ваши ящики ещё не работали, как следует, а уже вышли из моды...?
