It's almost winter here in NZ and I'm loving watching your tomatoes, it reminds me of the spring! It's going to be interesting watching the bush type ones and seeing the difference between them and the tall ones. I'm still ripening 2 tomatoes outdoors! A mid sized unknown variety volunteer plant in the carport, and a Black Krim beside the greenhouse. We're really enjoying having a few tomatoes a week. It's not been colder than 9 overnight in Auckland yet, most nights it's been around 14 c which is unseasonably warm..

Weather is off. Here in DC we have been having these dark clouds for a few months with an occasional sunny day, like today. Temps will be going back down to the 50s tonight. Planted my tomatoes & peppers outside this week. Potatoes & onions have been out for 4 weeks.

I'm growing three varieties of tomatoes this year, all from saved seed. Unfortunately almost all of the seedlings died when I had to work out-of-town for a weekend, so I've re-sown them. They're still tiny seedlings, but that's just as well. Here in northern Michigan tomatoes can't be planted out until about mid-June. It's just too cold and frosty until then. It looks like you've got some beautiful plants! I'm a bit jealous.

Nice to see your tomatoes. They are well on and ahead of mine which I grew from seed. Great to hear your ideas. Gives me good inspiration for my own growing.
    Thanks.

I only just discovered that a lot of double-glazed windows include UV filters etc that prevent the full spectrum of sunlight reaching plants' leaves, even on a sunny south-facing windowsill. I dug the Grow Light out again yesterday...

Mine aren't in yet but I have been hardening them off. Really hard to decide when to plant them out . A couple of weeks ago it was in the 50's F and rainy. Then within a couple days it went to near 90 for 6 straight days! too hot or too cold. Next week It's supposed to be in the upper 60's so maybe that will be the time. Mine are leggy too under high end grow lights, strange. I'll be able to plant them really deep. Next year I'm going to try a cooler place after they germinate. Neil in Oregon

It's always scary knowing when to plant them out but for some reason this year seems scarier.

I think rain sounds nice Erica and since we are in a heatwave I’d love some rain 😂. I’m not impressed with my tomatoes this year but hopef they will catch up soon. I swear next year I’m just buying starters 😅. Have a super week Erica, Ali 🌞🥵🇨🇦

You should start your tomatoes six weeks to two months before you plan to plant them out, or go into their final pot/bucket. Our last frost date here is the 10th of May, and we have hard a few hard frosts in the first week of May. But I start mine on the 17th of March, and in my poly since they were a week old.
The rough guide is that your tomato plant should be no more than twice the height of the pot, and have no flowers, and the time of transplanting. If you have some staging, that will keep your plants up off the colder ground. You just need to be checking the local weather via the met office, say.
If you are due a really hard frost, bring them in overnight. Or if the staging has shelves, you can set your plants on the second highest, and drape bubble wrap/fleece over them. Mine were on the allotment, so they couldn't really be brought in for the night. I also grew over 100 plants, none of which died, or outgrew their pots.
I started 85, and had a load more come up from a cross I made last year. Gave most of them away, and down to 44 plants now. Made a bad video last week about the 12 I have in a shared poly. The other 32 are in my own poly, like yours. It's not a great video by any means. But you get to see some of my plants, and how I avoid blossom end rot with pot grown tomatoes.
Take it easy, and hope your tomatoes do well for you this year.

The Minibell is a container tomato so won't grow as leggy as the indeterminate types which want to romp off and vine - I had the same with my container toms vs my determinate and indeterminate. My Tiny Tom are (as their name suggests) tiny - covered in fruit and smaller than the minibell was in this video - and that's full height now.
I'm growing Principes Borghese as well (I can't pronounce it either) - looking forward to dehydrating it for use through the year. It gets up to 5 foot tall so is pretty much a giant compared to the minibell, which I think only gets to about 1 foot or so tall (iirc)

Try rubbing candle wax on the zippers to help them run better, it may help them last longer (don't use any oil as it may make the plastic deteriorate).

With the seeds you get in tomato 🍅 you only need to keep 2-3 per year and store them to have enough for your use and to take to swops… in my opinion

My tomatoes are in pots in the sunniest part of my garden, gets about eight hours at least, I’m in Cornwall and it’s been very mild for a week or so now , however it’s forecast to go down to about 5 degrees for a couple of nights this week, so I’m thinking I’ll fleece them at night , fingers crossed , they are well grown but haven’t gone leggy but at least you can bury them very deep when you finally plant them. Good luck Erica it has been a very cool wet spring everywhere this year.

Planted my outdoor tomatoes into their final positions this afternoon. They needed to get in the ground.
For those leggy GD tomatoes, you could try laying the pots on their side for a couple of days. The tips of the plants will then raise up towards the light and when you come to plant them you can bury most of the stem below ground (space permitting) and get lots of extra root growth. Should produce a better yield.

So this for me is currently two months on from your video release, all of my plants are 5 to 6 foot in height and only just sprouting toms about the size of a grape, hopefully everyone’s doing better with theirs.

Hi my tomatoes are he same, some really leggy and a couple are over 2 feet tall, going to plant them deep and possibly on the side like laying them down to cover stem. What are you doing about your really tall ones.?
    Ps love your channel ❤

The same happened to me. One variety got leggy (a cherry indeterminate) and the other didn't (a salad bush type). They were right next to each other, same light and same soil. That hasn't happened before.

Love your tunnel! We keep getting a stray cold night so I've been staggering the transplants. Most aren't leggy though because of strong grow lights. Approximately half of the tomatoes and bell peppers are outside so far. I'm determined to save seeds this year, at the very least the pepper seeds because they're easiest.
