    Synopsis | Supersonic (2010)
Remember what it was like waking up on Christmas morning to find a shiny new bicycle under the tree? Well, that's how the men and women of our Air Force are feeling right now.
They've just taken delivery of the first new combat aircraft replacing our aging fleet of F-111s. Each Super Hornet - or Rhino as they're known - costs sixty million dollars and can reach speeds of almost two thousand kilometres an hour. Naturally enough, our test pilots have been itching to take them for a spin. Liam Bartlett was lucky enough to hitch a ride.

I am smiling ear to ear. I am a 69 year old lady. My “forever choice” for a career was a fighter pilot.
Unfortunately, when I was old enough to join the service I was already married and had a child. And it wouldn’t have mattered anyway because ladies were not allowed to even fly a jet let alone be a fighter pilot. I’m so glad they finally figured out that women have a great hand eye coordination and strong backbones. I am so proud of every woman that gets to do the things I wanted to do so desperately bad. I ended up becoming an RN and had a good career but, my heart will always be a fighter pilot.
God Bless them one and all.

I hear ya sir. My mum was in the Air Force and flew T38 talk. Always saw pics and stories. Now I’m 38. And my first job when I was a young man , was marine salvage. Company chartered many king airs. And I was always traveling in it. I befriended a pilot. He let me ride up front and let me take the yoke. Work and life happens. And now that I single. I regret not pursuing that field. Now that I’m studying and been in few flights. I love it. The most interesting topic ever and just hoping I can keep pursuing to get my license and night time with instrument so I can be back in the air. Especially when I saw the guys ride bikes. I was in motorcycle racing and track days on my sport bikes. So I feel like this is right up my alley ! Wish you the best

The Super Hornet remains a dominant, well-rounded fighter to this day. They have the lowest RCS of any fourth-gen fighter and an excellent radar. They complement the F-35 well and can be used as a "missile truck," similar to the role the F-15EX plays for the US.

Former Boeing / Lean Manufacturing ... spent quality time up close and personal with our F/A - 18 Super Hornet, from pile of very expensive parts to final certification and handed over to eager customer (US Navy). It looks like it is going nearly Mach 2.0 even standing still.
When I first arrived in St Louis I was greeted by F-15's and F/A-18's playing touch and goes on main runway. Both aircraft can easily pull 'vertical' anywhere on runways there. It never grows old would and soon would be part of same aircraft.
Flight Lessons 101: Never puke inside cockpit of 50 million dollar aircraft. If you have to puke, make sure it's in the vomit bag. We have same rule number 1 in our gigantic twin aisle wide body jets made in Everett Washington also.
Looks like it will be long hours sorting out production issues... welcome to Lean and everything it means. These steps will help insure future sales from DOT. Pass the coffee. Rule number 2... don't spill coffee in the customer's 50 million dollar jet fighter.

The total cost includes spares including spare engines, ongoing maintenance and support costs for a set number of years, initial pilot and maintainer training costs which would be done back in the US and most likely include initial batch of weaponry to be used with the type as well.

    • @soulsphere9242
      @soulsphere9242 6 місяців тому

@@lucianog7724 It is a lot but remember for a modern fighter jet like the Super Hornet, for every hour of flight there are over ten man-hours of maintenance. Many parts have defined lifetimes and need to be replaced on regular schedules so both a stockpile of parts needs to be bought as well as securing long term contracts for ongoing supplies. When it comes to training this includes the purchase of ground simulators as well. Simulators have become more important and sophisticated because actually flying modern aircraft is becoming more expensive.
Then consider the missiles: a single Sidewinder is about $500,000 AUD and an AIM-120 about $1.5 million....it quickly adds up when buying a supply for say five years. Missiles also have expiry dates, so they do need to be expended now and then.
Finally, any contract is likely to include some degree of support for ongoing software updates from the manufacturer, but any customisation are likely an extra charge. Software costs are actually a huge part of the development costs of modern aircraft, probably second only to the engines.
The US has a different model for pricing their purchases, rather than buying everything as a package, they buy each system separately: they will buy F-18 and F-35 airframes in batches, but then negotiate maintenance contracts separately and buy weapons in bulk batches that are not tied to the aircraft purchase, etc. They can do that because they have scale, but it makes their individual airframe purchase cost seem much cheaper compared to when a foreign country buys aircraft from the US.
Anyway hope that is informative. But yes, this stuff IS expensive!

You can fall into the old trap of Talking Up the benefits of the super Hornet etc etc all you like .... BUT at the end of the day One has to look at the size of Australia and HOW MANY super HORNETS did you say there was .... to DEFEND Australia!.... You also have to consider Attrician Rate of Aircraft/Pilots. ie In the lead up to the Battle of Britain the Pilot Training was some 4 years.... During the B.o.B. due to Pilot Losses the Training period for Pilots had to be reduced to 6 MONTHS with new Pilots joining Squadrons with as low as 10 hours flying time.
Another matter of great importance is because of the complex nature of the Super Hornet etc is the Hornets Flying Hours ratio as against it's Servicing Down Time.
The Navy is an excellent example with them not having enough SHIPS available to go to SEA... An example is the Collins Class Sub...Is there one actually seaworthy if so what defence system does it have...can it fire Torpedoes or only Catapults.
The Army is wrung out with deployments and lacks vital equipment.
The three Services desperately need more manpower.
Due to the size of Australia and it's extremely long supply lines... Governments need to be up front with Australians regarding the dire need for Australia's Defense Budget to be at least doubled.
Migrants to Australia MUST be capable of earning their money and NOT relying on Social Security Handouts. I am an immigrant and the condition when we arrived in Australia in 82 was NO SOCIAL HANDOUTS.
This current Government is totally incompetent .... Along with the Defense Budget should be included the establishment of Australian Defense Manufacturing/ Development INDUSTRIES to ensure supply and to EXPORT.

The Royal Austrailian Air Force has been flying the F18 Hornet since 1984.... WTF is that guy talking about? The older, Legacy Hornet is faster than the newer Super Hornet. This entire interview is wildly inaccurate in the first minute. The newer Super Hornet does have more powerful engines, but the aircraft is also larger and weighs more.

Does it matter? He clearly stated it goes Mach 1.8 and you can see it in the video on the screen designated as “M.”
There’s no such thing as “breaking a second sound barrier” and flying a little faster doesn’t give any advantages in this scenario. Chill.

Neither the Hornet nor the Super Hornet can get anywhere close to Mach 2. As a matter of fact, with hard points, pylons, missiles, tanks and bombs, they cannot even break Mach 1 because of the high drag and lack of thrust at those speeds. It can only go to high supersonic speeds in slick configuration and without external tanks.

    • @al28854
