They also had a B2 static display and a flyover from "the spirit of St. Louis." The B2s each are named after American cities.

I was chosen from the entire Air Force, to be one of the elite guards, of the first SAC operational B1, at Offutt AFB during my tour of duty in the Security Forces. The aircraft FODDED upon landing. A bolt from a turbine cowling had come loose, and got sucked into the turbine. The aircraft, after the ceremony, was taken to the E4 NEACP hanger and stayed there for 2-3 months, until a new turbine could be installed. I have spent a lot of time in the cockpit of that aircraft.
The US needs to manufacture about 1200 new B1B's, with all the upgrades included. Call it the B1C. They are the most beautiful aircraft in the inventory in my opinion.
Many years ago, I read in Aviation Week and Space Technology magazine a pilot's test report on the B-1B. The author of the report was a former A-4 pilot, and he was amazed at the agility of the aircraft. He said it handled like a fighter.

The B1B is now a useful aircraft, but it was a wretched example of fielding a new aircraft. For most of its first two decades, whenever we had operations where it would be useful, it was grounded due to serious maintenance issues. Instead, we continued to use the B52 which is may, if they keep extending the service life, may be the first combat aircraft to be in operation for a century. (of course, the original B52 airframes are mostly long gone, but the last were manufactured decades later.)
Living near Nellis AFB, I can verify that a takeoff with afterburners sounds like what the space shuttle produced on liftoff, it rattles the house as it passes over.
I stood under one of these amazing aircraft at an Air Show in Maine. They had the bomb bay doors open and we were allowed to walk underneath. When they say it's the size of half a football field believe it.
Weirdly I’ve seen this plane since the beginning. I worked and a contractor to help build the B-1 testing facility and hangars at Edwards AFB. I worked right need to the flight line (closer than most of the AF employees). I’ve seen so many takeoffs and landings, but more cool, I’ve seen it pushed to the limits right over my head! It would fly at Mach right over my head. We would all drop our tools and grab our ears in anticipation of the sonic boom that followed . But to add to that was the F-111 being used as the chase plane!!! I saw these 2 planes do things you’d think couldn’t be done by ones that size!! In addition, I saw the U-2, SR-71, B-52 and also the F-117 when the public hadn’t yet. So many others I couldn’t count. But they were always doing max ability testing so that was cool!! But the coolest thing was I saw 3 shuttle landings and 2 takeoffs after it was loaded onto the custom 747!! That was AMAZING!!
Great video! There hasn't been much press on the B-1B vs the B-52, B-2s, and gunships in our recent wars. Glad to see the history, story and upgrade. I'm surprised Biden didn't cancel it like Carter. ;-)

My absolute favorite airframe. I've always loved bombers and the B1-B Lancer being supersonic, HUGE payload, ground terrain following radar, and just the sexy look of it make it my favorite. 2nd favorite is the AV-8B Harrier, 3rd the A-10 Warthog.
In a way this aircraft can be a supermodel in the world of beautiful planes because of how sleek it is and it does have the looks, which cannot be denied.
An amazing piece of technology that should be kept on hand and available as another tool with unique features and qualities that should be kept available for as long as possible because we have already paid to design and develop and build the thing and we already understand very thoroughly. It’s pros and cons.
The B1 was intended to replace the B-52, which it did not. The B2 was intended to replace the B-52, it did not. The B-52 remains the one aircraft every adversary of the United States fears, as it will get the mission done and bring the pain.
If I have understood, the original B1-A was designed and partly built by North American Aviation. When the revival as B1-B started, Martin Marietta was tasked to build basically the tail section under Rockwell (that time owner of North American) overall contract. Some of the technology was by that time obsolete, so Martin Marietta was looking for updated controls on the6 welding lines that they bought from our company. I was sent to visit the North American to get the background and then I designed the revised new controls. To my surprise, the welding lines were mothballed after the end of the production of the ordered planes. A few years later, though, I got called to Boeing, that time owner of Rockwell (and North American) in order to help restarting a couple of those once mothballed systems. The reason was a need for spare parts on the B1-B. I don’t know how much of what I know should be kept in “wraps”, so I leave it all untold. Just my private bragging!
I expect the BOne to be extended past its "projected" retirement just as the A-10 and B-52 were. With the number of B-2's fixed at ridiculously low numbers due to corporate greed and program mismanagement and the B-21 Raider fairing about the same, sheer numbers and unmatched capabilities will keep these aircraft flying for decades longer than "projected". Putting all your eggs in one basket is a recipe for destruction. The B-1 is as relevant today as it was when it was first fielded. Size matters, Speed matters, Payload capacity matters. Stealth is not the only consideration.
One of my favorites.. can it be enhanced? (chatgpt results lol) This proposal outlines a comprehensive upgrade plan for the Boeing B-1B Lancer strategic bomber, integrating advanced Pratt & Whitney F135 engines with enhanced thrust, supercruise capability, and adaptive fuel usage. Coupled with redesigned nacelles featuring S-shaped intakes and canted dual stabilizers, these modifications aim to significantly improve the B-1B’s performance, stealth, and operational flexibility. --- ## Introduction The Boeing B-1B Lancer has served as a vital component of the U.S. Air Force's long-range strike capabilities since its introduction. However, with evolving threats and the need for enhanced operational effectiveness, modernization is essential. This proposal seeks approval and funding for the proposed upgrades, ensuring the B-1B remains a formidable platform in future combat scenarios. --- ## Proposed Upgrades ### 1. Engine Upgrade to Pratt & Whitney F135 - **Higher Thrust**: The upgraded F135 engines will provide increased thrust, enhancing the aircraft's acceleration and climb performance. - **Supercruise Capability**: The ability to sustain supersonic speeds without afterburner will allow for rapid ingress and egress from hostile areas, significantly reducing exposure time. - **Adaptive Fuel Usage**: Advanced fuel management systems will optimize fuel consumption based on mission profiles, extending operational range and versatility. ### 2. Redesigned Nacelles with S-Shaped Intakes - **Stealth Enhancement**: The integration of S-shaped intakes will reduce the radar cross-section, improving the aircraft's survivability in contested environments. - **Aerodynamic Efficiency**: Optimized nacelles will reduce drag, complementing the advanced engine capabilities to enhance overall flight performance. ### 3. Canted Dual Stabilizers - **Improved Stability and Control**: This design will enhance aerodynamic stability, particularly at high speeds and during maneuvering, resulting in better handling characteristics. --- ## Expected Benefits 1. **Enhanced Performance**: The combined upgrades will significantly improve speed, maneuverability, and operational range, making the B-1B more effective in strategic missions. 2. **Increased Stealth**: With reduced radar signature, the upgraded B-1B will be better equipped to penetrate advanced enemy air defenses. 3. **Operational Flexibility**: The ability to adapt fuel usage dynamically will enable the B-1B to switch between mission profiles more effectively, increasing its versatility. 4. **Future-Proofing**: These upgrades will ensure that the B-1B remains relevant and capable of meeting the challenges of modern warfare. (ok I was bored)
Two B-ones flew over a football game I attended in the fall. They are majestic and sleek. Dad was an aerospace engineer for Rockwell - the contractor that designed the B-one. He worked on the project. One of the failings of the Carter administration was the cancellation of the program. Very shortsighted. Thankfully, the Reagan administration resurrected this remarkable aircraft. The nuclear arms compromise that prevents the B-one from carrying nuclear ordnance has limited it as a potent deterrence to military aggression. Those who don’t appreciate the peacekeeping power of deterrence against our most formidable adversaries have likely only visited overseas countries in front of a screen while sitting at home. 🇺🇸 They enjoy that comfort thanks to the hard work and sacrifice of the ladies and gentlemen of our armed services and the defense engineers who see beyond current events to the security needs of the future.
Talk to me when you are 50....sincerely B-52 :). I worked 5-52s during my career in the AF so I have a special place for that aircraft. I was always a but jealous of the B1 because of the cool factor, but never had the privilege of working them.

It's good to keep the B1B up to date since they are being maintained at great expense but the fact that is was canceled due to it's inability to penetrate Soviet airspace fifty years ago has not changed. Moreover, the F117 (still secret at the time) was able to accomplish that task.

This machine is a very threat to all enemies. The payload both present and future and it's low level flying capability make successful surprise strike especially good, and when combined with stealth aircraft taking out radar and SAM sites making way for this machine makes the USAF something to consider when f in around.
Swing wing technology was abandoned after the 1980's as the emphasis on stealth characteristics impacted modern military aviation design. These upgrades to the Lancer are more reflective, perhaps, of its initial very significant purchase price and its still useful ability to deliver large payloads in lower level regional conflicts where there is limited enemy air detection capabilities or opposing air defenses. You don't retire billion dollar airplanes without a good reason. Nonetheless, in many respects the airplane is already obsolescent. Its a 40 year old design based upon a now redundant air power strategy. Certainly an amazing airplane in its day.
Has the USAF even released what has been done in the upgrade? They do still have secrets you know. Variable sweep wings have been around a long time,F-111,F-14,the Panavia Tornadoes, and even the Russians have had them too.

Putting all your eggs in one basket is a recipe for destruction. The B-1 is as relevant today as it was when it was first fielded. Size matters, Speed matters, Payload capacity matters. Stealth is not the only consideration.
Even our computers can't pronounce "Nuclear," without it coming out as "Nucyerler."

4. **Future-Proofing**: These upgrades will ensure that the B-1B remains relevant and capable of meeting the challenges of modern warfare. (ok I was bored)
They are probably the engines it was always looking for
I've never seen the aircraft in person. The B-1 can carry much more than the B-52.
The compromise doesn't mean that it CAN'T, it just means for now it doesn't.
@ Never said it can’t
Well, Jim was a sub guy
Talk to me when you are 50....sincerely B-52 :). I worked 5-52s during my career in the AF so I have a special place for that aircraft. I was always a but jealous of the B1 because of the cool factor, but never had the privilege of working them.
It's good to keep the B1B up to date since they are being maintained at great expense but the fact that is was canceled due to it's inability to penetrate Soviet airspace fifty years ago has not changed. Moreover, the F117 (still secret at the time) was able to accomplish that task.
Sr naraitor some of the one righting they saund like they are not real Americ 10:53 an they are CRITISIDING THE AIR CRAFT THAT IS KEEPING THEM SAFETY FROM THE ENEMY, CAN ANYONE TELL ME WHAT IS IN THOSE PEOPLE CERBELO ,CEREBRO ,MINING BRAIN IN INGLISH, PLEASE ESPLEGAME ,EXPLICAME OR IN ENGLISH EXPLAIN ME
Thrust vector tech could be applied for computer controlled threat evasion in low alt bombing runs. To increase survivabilty by alot.
The B-1 didn’t participate in the gulf war it was on nuclear reserve🤷🏾♂️
Also it was grounded due to an engine falling off during a training flight over Colorado.
Just like the B-52!!! I think the B-1 Lancer will be just like the B-52. It’s longer life will extend its life but it will not beat the B-52 for the longevity!!!😂😂😂😂
Voice says 75,000 screen says 7,500. Check.
This machine is a very threat to all enemies. The payload both present and future and it's low level flying capability make successful surprise strike especially good, and when combined with stealth aircraft taking out radar and SAM sites making way for this machine makes the USAF something to consider when f in around.
The identify friend or foe feature is not new. We had to reprogram them daily when I was a crew chief on fighters back in the 70's.
Should last as the 52??😋
If they can do an engine upgrade on the B52, what about the B-One?
What are Nucular payloads? Arethey Nuclear?
The Lancer is THE most beautiful war bird to ever fly the skies. Hearing the graceful bird called the "BONE" disgusts me.
But ANYTHING which can set off 4,000 car alarms upon takeoff gets my full approval. HUA!
P.S: The guy saying "This once NEW KYA LER bomber..." is a moron.
Came out in ‘77 not ‘85. Jimmie Carter did cancel the program but his term in office was 76-80. Ronald Regan reenacted the program.
Correction: the B-36 still holds the conventional bomb payload record: 84,000 lbs.
Totally NUKULAR MAN!!! Nuclear?
Narrator: it is pronounced New-clee-ar, not nuke-u-lar = nuclear.
👍👍👍
The bone!!! Freaking love this bone girl! One of the just sexiest airframes....let alone it being a nuke bomber.... originally! Those curves and lines! Sleek killer!
I fly RC planes....now...and a manufacturer makes one and...it's beautiful but...they are one of the companies that takes shortcuts on electronics. Would have no problem spending $700 of Eflite or Freewing made it but.... nothing worse than spending $700 for an EDF jet...and then having to gut it and spending another $300-400....to make sure it doesn't dirt nap on its maiden flight....lol.
Glad they are upgrading this bird. Nuke war....just ain't gonna happen. But, plenty of kinetic targets in the future. This bone girl...can drop a LOT of ordnance...in just one pass!!! Love the bone!!!
They painted it black so it stands out better than the grey, impressive?
My opinion one of the greatest aircraft in the world, when I look at it it is BIUTIFULL FOR ME ONE OF THE GREATEST THANK-YOU MR PRESIDENT RONALD REGAN ONE OF THE GREATEST PRESIDENT OF AMERICA AGAIN THANK-YOU SR MR PRESIDENT REGAN I WILL NEVER FORGET YOU SR MR PRESIDENT RONALD REGAN ONE MEN THAT LOVE AMERICA 🇺🇸 AND THE AMERICAN PEOPLE GOD BLESS YOU SR MR DONALD REGAN
Elite guards? We used to call them SP's
OMG! I'm fu-king shocked!
Much bigger aircraft that it looks in photos. Pretty near the size/weight of the B-52.
You can compare the two at the USAF Museum at Dayton, Ohio,
Brother retired on the b1
There weren't any stealth aircraft when Jimmy Carter canceled the B1.
❤❤❤
there's probably a B1-C underway.
When you can’t build a 6th gen, you upgrade the old to 7th gen.
