OK after 9S lead to K and Ace, play QS discarding club, then play 8S discarding club. Now 11 tricks are cold and 12 if East leads the singleton D. let's say E leads another spade, S discards a club and west ruffs with JH. Now the hand can be cross-ruffed out after the AD is taken. East can ruff D but S can always over ruff with H in reserve...
It says MP so this is all about over tricks. First thing I'd do is play 2 rounds of trump. If hearts are 2-2, then making 6 seems very easy by setting up diamonds. If it's 3-1, I pull the last trump and I do think I play for a 3-3 diamond split rather than taking the finesse. I'm not sure if that is right though.
Having seen the hand, I was definitely imagining it split 3-1 with LHO rather than RHO. I don't know much about vacant spaces, but once LHO shows up with 3 spades and 1 heart, I know it's definitely right to finesse them for the queen of diamonds (RHO has 4 cards that could be the diamond queen, LHO has 9)
I think you want to establish the diamonds after drawing two rounds of trumps. Leading every suit BUT trumps means you give the opposition every opportunity to ruff, and you know they have an unbalanced hand. 1. win AS 2. AH 3. KH (if the hearts broke 2/2 you can now take every trick) 4. QH 5. QS (discarding a club) 6. d to the J 7. AD (discarding club) 8. KD (discarding club) lets assume the diamonds are 4-2, not 3-3 9. d, ruffing in hand 10. s, ruffing on the table 11. d (discarding club) 12. d (discarding club) 13. h
That’s definitely a better line. Actually, even after drawing three rounds of trump with AKQ heart, you still have trumps left in dummy and hand, you will take every trick, if you attempt the finesse which happens to succeed.
I think there are two legitimate lines on this hand both start with playing the ace and Queen of spades and ditching a club. I would play a top trump first just to see if hearts break 3-1 or better. Then take a diamond finesse and play a low diamond and ruff it - hoping for a 4-2 diamond break or better. By the law of vacant spaces/places LHO is more likely to hold the Queen of diamonds - if this works then play the King queen of hearts ruff a spade and then play all the diamonds from the top and getting rid of all the club losers. So that is the most optimistic line and is pretty reasonable. The second line is to cross to a top diamond and play a club to the king and play out as before but making sure you ruff the club and not the spade.
the john stell answer is ok as a start, but i would play 3 rounds of spades (discarding a club from north) then ha , diamond to ace diamond ruff, HK (unless someone did not follow to ace), club (possibly King), get to dummy via a club ruff, diamonds
@@philiphydes341 - well I'm glad I made a start for you 🙂 - not sure your answer makes sense Philip - they will win the third spade - are you ruffing the third spade and then playing a heart to the ace? I think you need to look at your answer - as it makes no sense - I tried my best to make sense of it - I think my answer is best still if you are trying to win all the match points - if the diamonds break 4-2 or better - which seems normal and LHO has the queen of diamonds then you make all 13 tricks - you cannot do better than 13 tricks.
Another possibility, is to play AQ spade pitching a club, and even play your third spade and pitch another club in dummy> loser on loser play
exactly, this line gives 11 tricks cold and 12 if East leads the single D

right ... if ya gonna lose a club ,lose it on the spade you would have ruffed and you have 4hearta in dummy still
So why didn't you pull trumps immediately after you took the 1st spade trick?
Eliminating losers is the wrong approach. Declarer should approach should think about how to develop the necessary winners. I like Phil Barker's line.

So on the actual layout I'd make 5 natural heart tricks, 1 ruff, 2 spades, and 3 diamonds for 11.

1. win AS

4. QH
5. QS (discarding a club)
6. d to the J
7. AD (discarding club)
8. KD (discarding club) lets assume the diamonds are 4-2, not 3-3
9. d, ruffing in hand
10. s, ruffing on the table
11. d (discarding club)
12. d (discarding club)
13. h
That’s definitely a better line.

East is probably short in diamonds
ruff clubs
