  • Rane released the Rane TWELVE this week. Does this mean the end of DVS? Here are my thoughts.

    I wish the consumer had the choice of running serato not the manufacturer telling us and that we have to use that specific mixer. I hope when Rane releases there upgrade it is more like actual 12 where you connect using phono lines not usb and that it comes with flash drive for those that just pop in our memory stick and are off!! And no need to be in battle mode i think it kinda defeats the purpose djs set up their 12s like that so the S Arm does not get in the way when battling. Put the. 12 like a 12 with start stop on the left your pitch on the right and some hot cues are cool in the back and what would really set off the New Updated Version of the Rane 12 would be to some how some way to install a TOUCH SCREEN!! that..would..be Awesome!!! Im sure every cdj dj would lose their minds!! That is a suggestion and would be a great suggestion. To recap: no having to use Serato or Traktor for that matter. No having to use only one specific mixer. Let the dj choose his set up if we are spending the money. Add flash drive to the 12. Put back the original set up no need to be in battle mode if there is no S Arm to get in the way and last but not least add a touch screen to the 12

    Agreed but disagree lol I can definitely see like the 72 popping up more than the 12s because turntablist that travel definitely adopt a new solid mixer you see how quickly the S9 became a new "standard." Now with the 12s actually seeing them out I think a different way. The numarks and technics "CDJs" of the past never got adopted because frankly they kinda sucked. The 12s kept it simple and solid and that's all a DJ that uses turntables really wants. It has been done before but the 12s seem to be doing it right. From the reviews the feel just like a turntable and you won't feel a difference from your Technics or Pioneer PLX-1000s that mostly every club/travel turntable DJ uses. Combine that with the fact you don't have to worry about needle issues I wouldn't be surprised if they're adopted at least by the beginning of the next year. I would say this year but the Phase is something new that hasn't been done before and I think mostly everybody myself included is waiting to see what Phase is really about and if it's a solid product.
    Phase can definitely take over but if it's not reliable then the next best option is the 12s if of course you're not playing actual vinyl at your gigs. Even today you still have DJs doing special events with at least 45s so the actual turntable of course won't die anytime soon. The club and traveling DJs definitely want to be able to not have to worry about needles and vibration problems so something like the 12s is definitely needed because otherwise DJs that feel more comfortable on turntables have been "forced" in a way to use CDJs something they don't feel completely comfortable on but up until now has been the only "solid" way to perform without the issues that come from your regular turntables. I'm honestly just glad to see products like the 12s and Phase because now you might see more DJs on turntables or 12s being able to perform at these bass heavy venues and not have to worry about any issues which at the end of the day is great for the DJ world!!!

    Personally, the phase has my interest the most. Early tests on the responsiveness look decent, and if it turns out to be as accurate as DVS as they claim, I could see DJs really getting behind it. Think about the benefits; no swapping headshells between DJs, easy transitioning from DJs that use regular styli, no Serato/Traktor boxes to connect, no broken/dusty needles, no worrying about the venue having turntables with busted/janky tonearms, you can use it on literally any record (or even things that aren't records), and my favorite part, no possibility for feedback! Which is an issue I've run into on even the most isolated setups more than a few times...

    Would these rane 12 work with any ordinary mixer or do I HAVE to use the rane 72?

    • @DJCouchKing
      @DJCouchKing  5 років тому

      They will work with any Serato DJ setup. The only thing you might need is a USB hub depending on how many USB ports you have. The benefit of the 72 is that it has extra USB ports to plug extra devices built in to the back.

      Yeah, it's cool, but still not real decks.

  • @bazoggy
    @bazoggy 6 років тому +1

    Good points, but... as a turntabllist there are some serious plus marks for the 12s number one being the fact that you only really need one deck as you can run two separate channels off of one deck, two being the previous attempts as you mentioned the first one being the technics was plagued with problems and didn’t really have a full vinyl experience as the centre of the platter had the control gubbins in the way and the denon SC3700 only had a 9’ platter if my memory serves me right.. I think there may be room for scratch and sample djs who just want to use them for scratching all sorts of mp3/wav files as they do now but without the need for DVS/control vinyl. Chances of them becoming industry standard is a BIG no but for £700-£800 each I recon you’ll end up seeing quite a few in recording studios and home Dj setups.

    I'm going to get a Rane 12 but only for being mobile. It gives me the opportunity to leave my Technics at home.

      Having a home rig is nice. I usually play on CDJs in the club so I can leave my gear at home too.

    I'd buy a phase over a rane 12, I still have my carts, technics and real vinyl, but it's worth it to evolve going into 2019. Every mechanic buys new tools, every DJ wants the newest tech. Most clubs don't give a hoot about scratching, CDJs are everywhere, club owners don't like gear that breaks, we'll see a lot of digital DJs moving forward.

    Lol if your 12s brake you’re done. I’d rather get the “phaze” for my technics 1210s. I’d just get the 72.

    SHURE is closing down - and for home mixing.. to be able to just grab the song online in HQ and 10 secs later you can scratch and cut it... I really like the Rane 12 a lot! Saves so much time and space and money!

    • @DJCouchKing
      @DJCouchKing  6 років тому +1

      I made this video before SHURE made the announcement. Now that they’re discontinuing their phono products the TWELVE is looking more appealing!

      Now we get to focus on the music instead of finding music, adjusting it with sound forge to be playable, putting it together with other music, making sure you got 10 mins, sending to Vinyl press, waiting for them, paying them for 4 copies etc etc... sooo much work just to try how this beat works with these scratches etc.. And no more having to fill the records with stickers or glue to make the needle go into the right spot :D

    Since it’s coming from Inmusic 2years down the line it will be in the museum and probably not supported by the system

    2 part answer
    rane 12, i think they're gonna sell because they're hot, but not game changer status
    rane 72, it sure looks like serious competition for the sm9, or any OTHER battle mixer. this one could be a game changer

  • @tunnis7us

    about Technics what do you think about their new "Hi-Fi" player and the idea not to make original models anymore though there propably would be market for it since their turntable has stood the test of time like non other after it ?

    • @DJCouchKing
      @DJCouchKing  6 років тому

      I think they stopped because of maintenance on the original manufacturing equipment. Would love to see the 1210s come back, but I think it's a pipedream at this point...

    no, they fukin expensive, can't play real vinyl and they big and heavy too . The Phase thing looks much more interesting for dvs user... 10" more portable better to dvs controler would be nice (like the denon 10 years ago- lol)
