It’s a sign of the post common sense times we live in now, we have to put up with the overly heavy censoring while most kids who probably aren’t even listening to this are exposed to way worse at home and online anyway.

Guilty as charged! Just last night I went around the parking garage arm. Background: in a crowded part of town. No street parking available, found a garage. Pulled up to the gate to get my ticket…but my K1600 wasn’t big enough to trigger the ticket machine. I tried calling the attendant. No answer. I went around the arm with the intent to pay on the way out. Again, no attendant. I went to a machine and selected the “lost ticket” option …$20.50. Nope. I round out and around the gate arm. Cheers guys!

I had a BMW dealer replace the rear brake pads on my R1100RS as part of a state inspection. I when I picked up the bike, I asked to see the old pads (since I NEVER use the rear brake) - they told me they had thrown away the worn out pads. I told them there was no way I wore out a set of rear pads in 20K miles (since I NEVER use the rear brake). They said it's customary to replace OE pads on bikes with 20K miles... again I told them I NEVER use the rear brake. Needless to say, I NEVER visited that dealer again!

@@kd350I have a university degree in mechanical engineering and can assure you my 1998 R1100RS does NOT have linked brakes. I can lift the back tire off the pavement with the front brake (i.e. no traction in air - thus no need for rear brake). There are some very specific conditions where I will use the rear brake, however these conditions occurred less than a dozen times before the incident described above (certainly not enough to cause any significant wear).
BTW - my BMW now has 98,000 miles and is still on the rear pads install by that unscrupulous dealer at 20,000 miles!!

Hey, you never answered Samantha's questions, so I will.
    1) Clip-ons are handles used for steering attached directly to the forks (typically on a sport bike) as opposed to one long handlebar.
    2) The number of degrees on a crankshaft (as in 270 deg.) in this case refers to when the combustion strokes occur in relation to degrees of crankshaft rotation. It's one of many things that determine the characteristics of an engine.
    3) A slipper clutch allows for smooth gear downshifts in case your engine revs are not properly matched to the speed of the whole motorcycle. This prevents the rear wheel from locking up on you and increases safety.
    Hope this helps!

In San Francisco there are a bunch of timed lights. Do 30MPH and you you cruise through them all. Hit 40 and you stop at every light. Squid on a a sports bike gets stopped and pops a wheelie next to a guy on a moped. Squid gets stopped at next l light. Moped gets stopped. Moped pulls a wheelie. Squid feels dumb.

As an auto mechanic for over 20 years, shops are not required to hold old parts for a customer unless they request them prior to start of the work. It’s a bureau of auto repairs thing. That being said, I always made sure to hang on to the old parts just in case they wanted them back. Asking for the parts a few weeks later?…no chance. You can’t expect them to just hang on to it that long. The same day you pick it up and for the old parts? That’s a different issue. I think the powersports industry is lacking in oversight from something like the BAR / consumer affairs. Customers definitely need to communicate up front.

My fave HSLS conversation in a long while. Very relatable, as I had one of those A**hole situations happen to me. Imagine me, 30 y.o. woman and my father's friend visits my father and sees my motorcycle parked in a front yard. Asks me if he can take it for a spin, I say sorry but no, (because NO, and also because I know that he has crashed and totaled at least two cars that were not his own but borrowed.) He swings his leg over my bike and while i am looking at him in a disbelief, he turns on an engine starts the bike and leaves. Comes back in about 15 minutes that felt like eternity. The motorcycle is fine. but still. What an A**hole!

The one about someone sitting on your bike can boil down to a safety issue.
One of my strange friends who used to ride swung a leg over my bike and immediately tried to start it in gear without pulling the clutch! It’s easy for people to get complacent, had I disconnected the sensor in the kickstand that little hiccup could have resulted in a rather nasty situation. We, as the motorbike owners have a responsibility to keep everyone as safe as possible around our machines.

im gonna blow your minds here - all of our parking garages here in singapore are built with motorcycles in mind, in one of 3 ways - first, my favourite, the arm doesn't clear the whole gap and there's a tiny motorcycle sized lane marked with paint that we're meant to use to access our (deserved) free parking (usually found at publicly funded infrastructure like sports stadiums, concert venues and rec centers), 2, there's a painted motorcycle detection zone in front of the arm that's specifically designed to pick you up (housing estates, shopping malls, business parks), or 3 (the shittiest version, often in only the fanciest shopping malls downtown) - there's just a big no motorcycles allowed sign out front.

Okay so the hospital near me has bike specific parking with a ramp off the footpath that leads straight to it, avoiding the pay for parking, and the ramp is easily accessible by tbe road, so i and everyone uses it and no one gets a ticket ever. Also, any public parking at shopping centres have let's say 3 hours of free parking and when you leave they read your front number plate with a camera and let you out or make you pay because you've been there too long, obviously that doesn't work foe a bike which doesn't have a front plate. So most places either have bike parking bypassing the boom gate anyway or the boom gate isn't full length so that a bike can get passed

The thing with parking is that, in many places, you need to leave the ticket "in" your vehicle as proof you've paid - especially parking meter on the street, but I encountered some parkin facilities with the same policy. How am I supposed to do this with a bike? Even if I had tape on me to secure the ticket, anybody could just take it. One of the situations where I feel persons responsible for traffic stuff often simply forget there are other vehicles than cars...

Also parking on sidewalks depending on where you live it might be ok, in my country if you leave at least 1.5m space on sidewalk, you can park your motorcycle.

Anyone arguing that safety gear is an exclusively personal choice is not correct. Your safety choices also affect anyone who is dependent on you or has any responsibility for you. When you ride as a group the other members of that group assume some responsibility for you (and you for them). Your safety is now a group concern, and the group absolutely has the right to participate in those decisions. If you join a group for a ride and you do not take the group's consensus on safety related decisions, you are an asshole. If you choose not to join with a group on the basis that their safety decisions are not to your standard, you are not an asshole. This also goes for family. If your family depends on you for their welfare then they absolutely get to participate in safety-related decisions because they are stakeholders in your health.

The other part of him leaving it and not telling them he’d be back to get it goes state by state. In Oregon, once the customers leaves, we can ‘dispose’ of the old parts, period! We have to be told at the time of sale that they want their old parts. The law is a little Grey, but Oregon’s laws are written to support shops, so here they’d be free and clear.l, assholes for scamming him, but not obligated to return anything after that time. EVERYONE should always take their old parts, good or bad, this prevents issues like this from possibly occuring.

I've ridden with riders from othe countries and was shocked how bad their skills are. Granted not everyone can do it in the UK but you can watch some YT videos at least. Assistant systems? As far as I am concerned ABS also falls under it. I once saw a post ABS trained guy go down when he braked hard on an ABS-less bike. He hit the ground at supersonic speed. Riding a bike optimally should always be the goal. People think they do not need to on todays bikes. Start discussing proper braking with that generation and you will not believe how much nonsense gets poured over you. “I only use the front brakes. Rear brakes are nonsense.” So you approx. throw one third of your bikes braking capacity away just because your bike has anti-stoppy software? Bad science dudes! Might one day kill you when push comes to shove.

    • @logangodofcandy

If you can't break without abs systems safely, you are doing it completely wrong. Not slightly, but totally and completely. Like shooting a gun while holding it backwards.

The group ride is an easy one. You should never ride with anyone you are not comfortable with.
I am mostly a solo rider by choice but I do ride with a few folks I trust. My threshold is even higher as I don't ride more than to the corner store with anyone I would not trust riding my bike. The odds of me finding more than half-dozen such folk at any given time is unlikely. I can only think of two I would take more than a day ride with but multi-day trips is more about me, not them.

Parking garage a-hole story from a non-rider: you know they make those arms out of wood? I was in a garage with an unattended gate and the machine wouldn't read my ticket. The screen said "NOT READ - SWIPE CREDIT CARD" and let me tell you, I was unwilling to let them have my credit card info when I had no idea how much they were going to attempt to charge me. Given that another car had queued behind me and those the only way out was forward, I went forward. Pro-tip: you want to inch up to the gate until it just touches the A-pillar of your vehicle, and then drive through as you pick up just a little speed so the arm snaps off relatively cleanly. I'm told.

Forgive and forget is the cry of an A**hole. A person should never carry around the hate, anger of things that have happened to them or been done to them by anyone it is unhealthy. A person should forgive not the person but the action and move on from it for their own well being but that does not mean you have to have that person around you to do it again or to forget it happened and leave yourself open for someone else to do the same thing to you.

As so many of these a-hole questions are regarding parking. I have recently begun calling out everyone about parking like an a-hole. Most responses are “I was just going to be there for a minute”. That minute never is a minute. When you park, pretend you will not be returning until tomorrow. Every time. You will almost never be the a-hole. Wether it’s a parking garage or delivering messages.

However, I asked for the air filter back, a few hours after authorization for a new one and they said they could not return it… which wasn’t great news but not the metaphorical hill I wanted to die on. This was while getting a new back tire , I let them

I have never been there and we both had an excellent time, and Ill turn things back over to the gasholes lol! I learned that driver/rider aid lesson the hard way. My last car had blind spot detection, suffice it to say its no substitute for a head check. #1 If that were my brother he would have found himself on the business end of a lawsuit. #2 Nope and you should have sued in small claims. #3 This will vary person to person but I'd say more than casual friends before just doing something like that. #4 Also no as you are not a guy in a circus. #5 I'd say you might be a bit of an AH for parking on the sidewalk but not in a space. #5A lil bit yeah, its called theft of service. #6 I'd say no, your ride your rules. Spurge all chaps are assless as they were originally designed for horseman to protect their pants and legs. I concur with Patrick that Spurge was not the AH in that instance. #7 I'd say Marcy is not but I dont think her husband is either. Assuming its just some innocent rides I'd say its fine but if Marcy, as the wife, says I dont like it then stop. Yes, please more of these episodes, good food for thought.
