    I was in the Paddock for that game. To put this into perspective - Everton were Champions and had beaten Liverpool 0 - 2 in the same game the previous season, so they were a very good side. This was only Toshack's second match, and it was before Kevin Keegan arrived (he joined the summer of 1971). As the commentator says a year previously Stevie Heighway had been playing amateur football and you can see here what a massive player he was scoring a goal and making a goal. So Shankly was building a new team here having dismantled the old team of Roger Hunt, St John etc over the previous two seasons and this comeback game, one of Liverpool's greatest, certainly marked the beginning of the revival and they went on to win the Division one title in 1972-73 as well as four more wins in the 1970s, and two European Cups (1977 and 1978) and plenty more trophies. Great times.

      Was at this game as a youngster supporting the blues. I think this and the semi-final result at Old Trafford 4 months later, represent the shifting of power on Merseyside from blue to red that was only briefly interrupted in the mid-eighties. The power gap now between the two clubs is wider than the Mersey.

    Probably the greatest match I ever saw at Anfield.. This was the day that the Reds self-belief was born.

      Very true. As a blue, Everton never properly recovered from this. There were other things too of course. The cup semi final when 1-0 up looking quite comfortable, selling Alan Ball [still the most baffling transfer in any club's history as it broke Ball's heart and destroyed the morale of a young and promising team], blowing the 75 title with the knock on effect of the lack of belief to win the 78 title, but most of all, post Kendall mismanagement of the club. I'm sure our 1971 will come and the balance of power will one day swing back, though it seems as far away today as it would have to a Liverpool fan in the late 50s.

      @@TheGiantKillers This was the watershed moment that the tide turned towards the reds. That 3rd goal felt like a punch in the stomach. Apart from a few moments of blue success this would be the template for the next 50 years.

    Wow ! November 21st 2020. Exactly 50 years ago today ! How time flies ! Amazing match. Liverpool score three goals in the last 17 minutes to overturn a 0-2 deficit. Heighway scores from an impossible angle. Toshack scores his first goal for Liverpool ! Lawler completes the comeback. Great memories !

    I was at this game. My father was unable to take me so he gave his mate the ticket on condition he took me along. But he was an Evertonian and was gloating when they went 2-0 up. I remember the details of the comeback vividly and the drive home - with the adult in silence and the small boy (me) smiling.

    For Liverpool fans today [or indeed Everton fans] it's inconceivable to think that prior to this match, Everton were probably considered the bigger of the two clubs. The Blues had often dominated Liverpool in derbies before WWII, winning seven straight trips to Anfield at a time when Liverpool probably had their best pre war team. They also left Anfield unbeaten in fifteen straight visits in the Edwardian era, again at a time when Liverpool had a great side. Liverpool's great derby moments were less frequent, although when they did get the upper hand it was often spectacular, like the 6-0 at Goodison in 1936 or post war 4-0 cup tie when they were in the second division and a 1950 cup semi final. In the 60s Liverpool closed the gap as a team but remained the Man City to Everton's Man United is status, this curiously despite a relatively evenly matched trophy cabinet. Everton's glory was well spread through the decades wheras Liverpool had tended to have spells of a clutch of trophies followed by long fallow periods, giving the wider perception of Everton being the bigger club. This match, coupled with that cup semi final a few months later, arguably, with hindsight, was the turning of the tide. Liverpool dominated the 70s while Everton went close a few times but fell short [1975 title being the biggest example] the blues rallied briefly in the 80s but their struggles in the 90s crucially cost them the place at the top table among the rich list that most people before the Premier League era would have expected of them. The gap now has grown as wide as it was a century ago in Everton's favour. History however says the blues shouldn't give up hope that one day their own 1971 will come their way and it will be their turn again. If Football continues to be played on Merseyside the balance of power will shift and indeed shift again.

    • @Chigleybus
      @Chigleybus 2 роки тому +3

      Very prescient comment my friend. For Evertonians, this game and the semi-final 4 months later are now seen as the turning points in Everton's fortunes. And we led in both games and were certainly not outplayed in either game. As you say, we came close in 74/75 but three defeats to two of the relegated teams (Carlisle home and away, and Luton) put paid to that challenge. We also went close in 77/78 but to no avail. 3 years on from your original post, the gap between us and LFC has widened even further. The Everton team in this video, though beaten on the day and playing like a shadow of the championship side of just a few months previously, would run rings round the current custodians of the Royal Blue shirt.

    That game in 1970 turned out to be a major turning point. Since then, Everton have only managed about 1 win in every 10 competitive matches v Liverpool. This is why from that date onwards, with only a very few exceptions Liverpool have been by far the most dominant team on Merseyside.

      It could be a pretty tight squeeze at times!
      So many (well positioned) anti crush barriers were the solution to avoiding a disaster. But I remember (early 1980's) on more than a couple of occasions being concerned enough to get away from the central area when it got just too packed.
      Worst I ever witnessed were people being passed down (overhead) who had fainted.

    Look at Tommy smith's involvement in the heighway goal. Some people think of him as just a hard man with no skill, but let ok at some of the matches from back then and he really could play good football. He said himself that all if the much maligned hard men if the 60s and 70s, eg Peter storey, Nobby stiles, Mike Doyle were also very good footballers.
