How No Time To Die references ALL Bond movies

  • No Time To Die referenced ALL Bond films before it in some shape or form. Some of these references are very intentional and obvious, others are more farefetched and likely unintentional. In any case, I took the time to compile a list of references and go through them in chronological movie order!
Credits and permission for a lot of these references goes to Pentex Productions and his video covering this topic:

Great video as always Jeroen, thanks for reaching out about it. It's great to see them outlined in chronological order like this, and it's also excellent to have an 'update' of my video out there picking up on some of the errors and oversights in mine (like the Dr. No ceiling!) I've added a link to this in the pinned comment of my original video for people looking for more info.

I noticed another easter egg, which is either intentional, or a coincidence. When Safin visits Madeleine in her office, he points out the Foxglove flowers, and how eating one can make your heart stop. The scientific name for Foxglove, is Digitalis - in Casino Royale, Bond is poisoned with Digitalis, and his heart stops!

In 1999's The World is Not Enough, Desmond Llewelyn's final bit of advice to Bond before he retired from the role of Q was "Never let them see you bleed, and always have an escape route." Bond broke both of these rules in No Time to Die and it ended up costing him his life.

Elements of "You Only Live Twice" are used here and are set in Japan, end part of the title sequence has a red circle, Japan is known as 'The Land of The Rising Sun': Cary Joji Fukunaga who directed No Time To Die has Japanese Heritage.
Towards the end of the 'Spy', the main villain Stromberg states that 007 is in love with someone known to both of them, Safin does the same - both scenes are set in the HQ of the bad guys.
007 fights Primo/Cyclops at a stairwell - with the latter being killed by a transmission device - he does the same when attacked by terrorist chief Steven Obanno in Casino Royale, albeit Obanno is strangled.
Alec Trevelyan, Viktor Zokas/Renard, Raoul Silva/Tiago Rodriguez and Elliott Carver - like any number of main enemies - get killed by 007 himself.
Noteworthy mention goes to Milton Krest, in the guise of a marine biologist for research, it's merely a front to smuggle/process contraband along with laundering illicit cash for Franz Sanchez, the main villain: whereas Safin - once a scientist - was an assassin for SPECTRE, using his knowledge for dangerous purposes.
Like Goldfinger, Octopussy, Live And Let Die, Tomorrow Never Dies, Die Another Day, Licence To Kill, GoldenEye, Moonraker and The Living Daylights: feature 007 killing both the main villain and top henchman, the same applies to NTTD.
If there's anymore references, please reply, no doubt, I've probably missed a lot of them, many thanks.

    1. Bond being poisoned in the climax reminds me of the climax of From Russia with Love. Whereas the movie had James not get poisoned, the novel he's not so lucky to say the least.
    2. James having a child is reminiscent of him and Kissy having a son named James Suzuki in the You Only Live Twice novel.
    3. A painting of Judi Dench's M shown in the scenes references a painting of Bernald Lee's M in The World Is Not Enough. Robert Brown's M is also present via a painting as well.

Thank You DutchBondFan for this wonderful compilation of movie references! My personal theory about the gun barrel lack of blood is to make the later "gun barrel" scene more powerful: this happens in the movie's action scenes when bond is invading the secret lair, and we momentarily get a villain's point of view when bond walks into a sort of stone and concrete tunnel, turns, and shoots toward the camera; we the audience didn't even know we were seeing from a villains point of view until Bond shoots us!

I went in spoiler free, so it only occurred to me how what was going to happen to Bond about fifteen minutes before the end of the film, and it caught me off guard. I don't have any problems with it as it wraps up Craig's time as Bond very neatly and I thought it was a brave decision by the director. I don't know if that ending has influenced me to not rewatch the film (yet) or not, but watching this video has piqued my interest in seeing it again.

I spotted plenty of references to the previous Bond films on my own when I saw NTTD in the theater last October but I had no idea that the movie quite literally references all 24 of them. I know Skyfall had lots of references on account of it coming out during the 50th anniversary but NTTD really went above and beyond. Even Die Another Day in all it's gaudiness didn't do that haha. Also of the four Daniel Craig movies to come out since Casino Royale only Skyfall didn't directly reference the events of that movie. In Dr No when we first see the three blind mice walking in town they walk through a town square that had a circular road in the middle of it. The shot is looking down from above so you see the whole view of the street. In NTTD we see Bond driving into town and it’s a whole driving sequence that ends with bond going through a town square with a circular road (where Bond and Felix almost crash into each other). I am wondering if this is the same location from Dr No….
It’s presumedly Kingston, Jamaica in both locations.
    Thoughts?

I did notice one reference, the opening title of walking along, turning and taking a shot, James literally does this near the end of the movie when comes out of a room and there is a foot soldier running up a tunnel James turns and shoots him just like in the opening sequence.
Also, any reference to Never Say Never Again?

That movie isn't a official Bond movie. So there probably isn't anything from that movie.

Now that I think about it, Saffin has an uncanny resemblance to Dr. No. Maybe they planned for them to be the same person. That would be very hard hitting and have Bond’s character come full circle, seeing him face off against his first ever foe.

Perhaps re GoldenEye when Bond kills 006- the "sliding" metal ladder at the end when Bond sadly meets his end. 🤔🤔🤔🤔

MWTGG: Bond girl knocks baddy into water tank that kills him. NTTD: Naomi knocks baddy into water tank...
Also, both movies' climaxes centered on protective doors opening/closing which led to the lair's destruction.

Nice video mate. Fitting tribute to some brilliant films! I know you’ve mentioned the gun barrel without blood, but did you notice that there is a scene in N.T.T.D where Craig is standing at the end of a corridor with round walls? It just made me think it was a mild reference to the barrel..Would you agree?

Personally I think the gun barrel sequence at the opening of the film was unintentional....

Great video. Certainly, it's nice to see all these references in NTTD. But I still cannot get over the ending, and NTTD remains the only Bond movie I have seen only once. As much as I like Casino Royale and Skyfall, NTTD dragged down my opinion of the entire Daniel Craig Era.

I though it was a terrible movie that put the series on self-destruction by killing off Blofeld(for at least the third time), Spectre, Felix Leiter, and even worse, James Bond himself. The only way that James Bond can come back now is if he is Kenny from South Park where nothing matters in the series. Daniel Craig wanted to see a young 20 something Bond as a prequel to series, but I don't know if the series can survive the damage done by No Time To Die. James Bond needs to be a an immortal character. No Time To Die was a huge mistake and makes it difficult to come back from the problems in the story it created.

Wait isn't each actor that plays James Bond playing a different version of him. So if Daniel Craig's bond dies we can still reboot the series and watch a different James Bond. So yeah it doesn't end the series

Very well done. I suspect that this will be the Last bond movie as we know it. Also done the same thing to Star Wars and Lord of the Rings.
Referencing all other movies, oh and also the obvious ending, seems to suggest that. Hope I am wrong.
    Again, great job.
